I made a new friend today!! 

Was helping a customer today with three little kids. The first one I noticed she was holding a tiny little girl with huge hair and bigger eyes. I chuckled and said something to her in baby talk and she slowly smiled at me. Her Mom ( I at first did not get it ) made a HUGE deal about her smiling. Just as I was thinking ok ok lady your kid smiled big whoop I hear a little voice from other side of the counter say " thats my baby sister" I leaned over the counter and looked down and there was this little elfine mischevious face belonging to a tiny little boy with the most WONDERFUL slow smile I have ever seen and he had a mohawk ( my ice cold heart melted on the spot ). He was also sporting a hell of a blackened eye. I made a big OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO face and said 

"what happened did your big sister beat you up ????" 

He giggled and shook his head no 

"ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh I know your baby sister beat you up"

he giggled louder and said nooooooooooooooo 

his Mom said well what happened ?? he grinned up at me and told me he poked his eye

WELL ... that was not very very smart 

fits of giggles all over 

I ended up talking to Mom for a bit turns out he did poke his own eye and do that to himself ... on purpose. Her three children are adopted and all born drug addicted. He was damaged by this so much he has nerve damage to the point he feels no pain nothing ever has no concept of what it means to hurt himself no warning system nothing to go off to stop him or teach him. This little guy will run into a wall and not think oh shit I am never doing THAT again because he feels nothing. He has shattered collar bones had full blown infections jumped of high things and jabs himself in the eye repeatedly when frustrated because he does not feel pain and does not get what stop it you are going to hurt yourself means. He does not touch a hot stove and learn to never do it again. The baby has nerve damage as well though how bad they are not sure of yet and she hardly ever reacts to simple interaction as of yet (thus the big deal that she smiled) The older little girl has coke bottom type glasses and will need heart surgery in the new year. 

These three kids were amazing and though they were given a crap start and chance in life thanks to 2 people who wanted to be Mom and Dad are given a chance and all the hope in the world that life wont turn out the way it started
