Attending the Texas Victim Services' Association conference this week to further enrich my skills that I do on the domestic violence crisis lines and through victim services at the police department, a call for action has been placed for volunteers for disaster relief teams here in Austin, Texas, because Ike is heading to Texas -- the question is whether it is heading now more towards Port Lavaca or Galveston.
Galveston already has mandatory evacuations in place since yesterday, I think.
Austin is generally unscathed by hurricanes because we are so far inland, but they are predicting that this might be like Hurricane Carla of the 1960's era and Austin may still have the effects of a cat 2 heading through Austin -- even as it heads through land.
UT has rescheduled the UT - ARK game that was scheduled on Saturday to September 27th in efforts to keep as many folks off of the roads travelling to here for the game.
Of course, all disaster planning may not be needed because we all know that the hurricanes can change direction quickly or do other unpredictable things such as downgrading quickly; however, it is better to be safe than sorry.
If I am not on much through this weekend, you will understand as I am moving into disaster relief mode with the organizations that I work and volunteer for.
Peace and prayers for all those bracing themselves for the potential wrath of Ike. May our prayers be answered by the potential wrath of Ike turning into a lamb.
