GERMANY 2006 - WORLD FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
THE KNOCKOUT STAGES BEGIN - NOW ITS PERSONAL
'the greatest global extravaganza since the second coming of The Messiah at the 2004 Athens olympic games' (or was it The Messiah coming second, not sure)'
For the 32 countries fortunate to have qualified for these finals, it means everything - the world, but what this represents all depends on which team you support. There are the fancied sides like Italy, Holland, Brazil, Argentina, England and host nation Germany where expectation and hopes of eventual glory are paramount and defeat unthinkable. Like a nation at war the whole country gets fanatically behind their team and patriotism spreads nationwide like an epidemic. Then there are teams like Uganda, Ivory Coast and Trinidad & Tobago, all making their finals debut, and simply qualifying and actually being here may just be the greatest thing ever to happen to their countries. Instead of the jingoism expressed by other countries, an carnival atmosphere sweeps over the whole nation which infects all who come in contact with it. Victory or defeat isn't the issue, for them the pride and disbelief that they have been allowed to share the same stage as legends is everything, and they are going to enjoy the party come what may.  I remember when the finals were all about the football, but patriotism has become a weapon and football merely provides the opportunity to settle old scores and initiate new ones. It's not Italy or argentina but the 'spics' and the 'argies', and helped by the press who serve us headlines which would be suited to wartime instead of a sporting competition, the populace turn into hounds baying for blood, either that of the opposition or a scapegoat from within our own team. (when David Beckham got himself sent off in the eventual defeat by sworn enemies Argentina, 'The Mirror' published a Beckham dartboard, and an effigy of the player was actually 'hung' outside a London pub) (After scoring the own goal against U.S.A which sent Columbia home from the tournament, defender Andres Escobar was actually shot dead on his return to Medellin)  So, who are the worst offenders when it comes to jingoistic, misguided patriotism ? 'Nazi' Germany, those Argy bastards, or those cowardly spics ? Nah, we all know who are undisputed 'Dickheads on tour - numero uno firmo'. 70824.jpg
Yeah its the fucking English innit.
Now it's well known that English fans are hooligans and 'British National Party' skinheads with a love of Adolf Hitler and all things riech, but allowing them to follow their team to, of all places in Germany, but fucking NUREMBURG, now thats asking for trouble innit. As it happens the event seems to have gone off quite peacefully, but now the competition enters the knockout rounds woe betide the poor city who have the bad luck to play host to England when they lose (which they will).
Consider the following poser...
  • Q. Which of these scenarios is the most auspicious?
  • 1. A pub on hot day serving ice cold beer.
  • 2. A pub on cold day serving  beer at room temperature.
  • A. Neither, coz we'll smash the fucking place up either way, yoo cunt !
In the small town where I live, with its population 5300 (white 98.49%) and its half dozen pubs, a strange mood seems to have engulfed the entire town. Almost every house is bedecked with flags, banners and posters. Not a few well wishes to the team, but more akin to a village in Kent during the queens jubilee celebrations. However, no cream teas or strawberries for this town, oh no. This is a place built on cheap beer and shite food, a place with more mad fuckers per square foot than Rampton or Broadmoor.
Watch this space...............
If every home in Germany was bedecked with flags and insignia as England is, we'd think the 4th reich was on the rise......might even be closer to home than we think
