Over 16,531,136 people are on fubar.
What are you waiting for?

Hrm, quick question...

Not on much lately, tend to forget things at my age anyway- does anyone remember the link (like "myprofileviewers.php" but the opposite) that shows you a grid-display of the most recent profiles you've visited, not that have visited you?

Thanks :)

Interests:
Main focus is classical music. Books- fantasy/sci-fi, history, mystery (Elizabeth George, Tony Hillerman, Reginald Hill, Colin Dexter, ...), biographies... (More to add later, getting set up..) (Several of my favorites- Hillerman, Pratchett- have died since I started reading them or even since I wrote this in the last decade...)
Also interested in (expect this list to grow) gryphons (still a member of the Gryphons Guild), computer programming, psychology, civil liberties, left politics, libraries, 20th-century philosophy (Wittgenstein especially but not only), comics (in print and online)
Math- been awhile (this was my major and grad school concentration), but still into what I remember of number theory, combinatorics, especially.  Did some work with independence structures/matroids (this has nothing to do with politics, I'm sorry to disappoint, despite my political interests) back in college.
A favorite, favorite quote: <br /><em>Oh, yes. It's vital to remember who you really are. It's very important. It isn't a good idea to rely on other people or things to do it for you, you see. They always get it wrong.</em> (Rincewind, a Terry Pratchett character, in the novel <b>Sourcery</b>. The quote made by another character, from another POV, in a later novel. Pratchett is high on my list of favorite modern authors...)
Music:<p>I'm a classical-obsessed person. Show-tunes too, started there...

Favorites:
Composers: Beethoven, JS Bach, Mozart, Brahms
Pieces: Beethoven string quartets, Mozart piano concertos, fourth piano sonata by M. Weinberg (Polish-Russian composer 1919-1996, see <a href="http://home.wanadoo.nl/ovar/vainberg.htm" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://home.wanadoo.nl/ovar/vainberg.htm</a>) from 1955, fourth string quartet by W. Stenhammar, are my favorites, but my almost-favorites become a long list. And I like making lists, and have nothing much else to do... so here's a partial list. (Saving early and saving often in this weather.)
(7-18-06 - hrm, this is getting just-a-bit lengthy. Will change the format a bit in a few ways and move parts of the content to another site later, after I've gotten some more written. Of course for now I have a few more important things to do, like some LilyPond material, university temporary work, and &c.)
Had a lot lengthier descriptions in the B area and under "Medtner" :) , but since this section is limited to 15,000 characters, I'm moving them elsewhere, then abbreviating them and moving them back in when I do not have a (was tearing when I wrote this months back, now another headache, but weaker. Yay cycles- coincidental, not biological ones) headache
Transferring the lists to a blog... (length limit was well exceeded when they were here.)
Tend to do much music writing elsewhere (esp. contributing to articles on Wikipedia - also have written two prefaces to published scores released by Musikproduktion Jurgen Hoflich and have had some brief composer profiles posted to MusicWeb International.</p>

Movies:I haven't seen that many movies more than once. The ones at the top of the list I have; the ones towards the center I probably haven't but still liked far more than enough to include. Not really in a particular order at the moment, though Andrei Rublev is my favorite.(This is old by several years and needs updating. Recentish favorites include "How to Train your Dragon" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox").--Andrei Rublev You Can Count on Me2010Monty Python and the Holy Grail (I always manage to forget how often I've seen this movie, but not the movie itself!)A Mighty WindManufacturing ConsentNaked GunNever Say Never AgainAmazon Women on the MoonAirplane! The IncrediblesO Brother, Where Art Thou?Twelve Angry MenTake the Money and Run (keep meaning to include this one in this list of films I've seen often and enjoyed, keep forgetting it!)2009-2010:-The Fantastic Mr. FoxDespicable MeHow to Train Your Dragon
Movies seen recently enough and recommended:How to Train Your Dragon (2010)Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

"Idols"None. But my family and best friends are my heroes- and if unlike for idols I know that they are made with feet of clay (I'm an atheist but that line is stunning metaphor...) - their work to overcome both their external troubles and their own failings - makes them more the heroes.<br /><br /> The people I list on CT as my family (and the people on MySpace on my front page- I've known those for at least three years, I think...) - are worth at least considering adding, if I may put on the annoying promoter hat.

Snapchat

I know they say it's more for people about half my age, but I finally went and got a Snapchat account. ( eschissel ).

Cheers!

(Have since deleted it, sometime around 2018/19...)

Not really, but I could NOT resist the subject line. :)

I have about two hours or less to get ready for chores, so just will type a brief note, go off and - fubar a bit (attempt achievements and points for a bit), then listen to some music. Or something. But -- really.

In the days since the US election I have been permanently blocked here by some people several times just because, near as I can tell, I've identified myself as a supporter of the Presidential candidate who didn't get 270+ electoral votes. Not, near as I can tell, because I've been exceptionally annoying in argument or behavior or language, or for other reasons I can tell; nor have I signed my name to attempts to divide the country, undermine his presidency, etc. etc. Nor __would__ I do so if it were in my power. (If I did do something to piss these people off beyond being known to have an opinion- eg comment politically on a photo while going on one of my rating binges- well, that's that then; ok, I actually vaguely do remember doing that once recently, I admit, but not to whom.)

I used to come here for relaxation, and have sometimes had to take long breaks because relaxation was not in the cards; my next break is going to be a many years-long one, at this rate, if some of you damned idiots can't learn what civilization means. (Edit: which refers, for such as can't work it out, to the foolish simply politically-motivated blocking, not to differing political opinions! And yes, there is a difference between a brief temporary block and a permanent block- I've used the former quite a few times, almost never the latter. ... but anyway.)

That's all for now.

This weekend--

I have a scheduled test (sleep study) at the hospital tonight so even this fubar-obsessive is probably going to have to take a break (though they have wifi 16_winksmile.gif)

... wait, so that's what "publish" blogs _means_. Whoooooops! Oh ok, set that to "on". Yes, I want people to see that I'm posting this... just not that I'm doing some other things (hee.) Well, that I was. I may not be around much, depending.

Depending on

"Used to be a link here somewhere that let you choose the Basic Homepage, where the top scrollbar would not have to load before you could do anything. Since the top scrollbar sometimes takes minutes to load -- I'm not going to upgrade my computer just for fubar - if I can't find out how to make this site workable without wanting to tear out my hair (... for that reason anyway) then I will not be here."

to quote myself...

In other words, if I can't use the site comfortably, I won't use the site. Suggestions welcome.

Oh dear.

If I can even post this blog :) ... rebooting may fix the problem, haven't tried that yet (I should of course!!...) - I can't update my status, can do very little on the site at the moment. Buttons are disabled, so's a lot else. Weird. Has been this way for more than a day now for me.

(Edit: so that's what it takes- Safari and fubar are not talking with one another now. Have to use another browser - of which I do have several on my machine, like SeaMonkey, Firefox, Chrome, etc.)

Ticker retux

(yes, it's redux, but for a penguin it's retux, no?)

Caught it and screenshot it after all, so I decided to upload it.   Thanks and best!

if anyone sees my ticker message please tell me. No need to capture it, I'll do that if I see it, can't pay you appropriately if you do (unless you'll accept a salute or somesuch); but it's supposedly been on since 6am until 6am tomorrow the 1st and I haven't seen head, tail or antenna (pardon a borrowed and pointless joke) of it. It bugs me, a little.

Ah well. Anyway, next ticker, if there is one, I'm going to have to write so it's more effective.
