Every February we celebrate Valentines Day by giving flowers, candy and cards to those we love. We do this in honor of Saint Valentine. You may be wondering, "Who is St. Valentine"?
Legend has it that Valentine was a priest who served during third century Rome. There was an Emperor at that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those that were married. With this thought in mind he outlawed marriage for young men in hopes of building a stronger military base. Supposedly, Valentine decided this decree just wasn't fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When Emperor Claudius II found out about Valentine's actions he had him put to death.
Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailor's daughter. Before he was put to death he sent the first 'valentine' himself when he wrote her a letter and signed it 'Your Valentine', words still used on cards today.
Perhaps we'll never know the true identity and story behind the man named St. Valentine, but this much is for sure...February has been the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating clear back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentines ranks second only to Christmas in number of greeting cards sent.
Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin cupido, "desire"). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love. It is also said that 85% of all Valentines purchased are by women…hmmm astounding fact. But at our house I have either sent or given flowers, candy and cards to all three girls. Bonnie also gets her share.
So while we really do not know which story is the correct story one thing remains perfectly clear. The Holiday is certainly a hit with Hallmark and other Card retailers.
Although I have a ton of things to right about this week I promised this is ditty on Valentines Day. I hope you enjoyed. Remember that Valentine’s Day is not just another Holiday made for card retailers but a Holiday handed down from generation to generation. Remember back when we all loved getting and receiving cards, notes candy from fellow classmates? Yeah, yeah I know it’s designed to worship those who are just falling in love. Well if that is the case, Then Thanksgiving is about killing a Turkey and eating it. Christmas is about getting not giving and what child was born on this day?...I forget…. Give me another present and that may trigger a response. Halloween is when Tituba came out of the closet in the year of our lord 1692. Ok am I starting to make sense. Enjoy the Holiday for what it is not who profits. Change history and change mankind. If one wishing to bitch about this and that’s. How about last nights Grammy’s when the Chixey Dicks won everything they were nominated for. Mary J Bligh decided to use the use her forum to apologize incorrectly for past references. We have two candidates running for democratic office which is better..Obama or Hilary. Oh my god! With so much going on in the world today. Please just enjoy what we have in past history…..
Oh yeah I will forget one day what the blonde tank like Chixey Dick said about her country but, not today.
