RevJ's blog: "Wicked Rants"

created on 01/24/2008  |  http://fubar.com/wicked-rants/b181230
One of my many jobs is with AAA as a full time over night tow driver, I am the only drier that is certified and authorized to utilize all of our equipment. (Flatbed, Wheel Life, Sling, Boom and Self Loader) Not even the night super can operate half the equipment I can. I have worked on and off fo nearly 18 years as a tow operator and have more experience then the majority of our drivers. Yet I am paid the sae rate as the other drivers on my shift and have been screwed out of two raises in the past 6 months. Three of the four other night drivers are lazy and I consistently turn in run sheets with two to three times more runs then them in the same time frame. These guys would rather sleep in their trucks then work; and yes they park in the parking lot of a local Dunkin Donuts and sleep in the trucks. These guys do what ever they want an demand things they clearly do not deserve nor have they earned. One driver in particular demanded he be given my truck as his permanent e truck and got it! This guy has only been here for a few months and had no experience when he came in to the company. He must be a product of the baby boomer generation; he has the mentality "GIVE IT TO ME; ITS MINE!" God forbid I ask for a specific piece of equipment that will make things easier and greatly reduce the risk of damage to a members car. I invested nearly $1,000 in personal equipment for extrications since he company don't see fit to issue it to me from the stock they have. Yet these clowns that have no clue how to utilize certain items like the cruse loop or continuous loop get them. Tonight I had 3 tows; back to back that totaled over 300 miles driving, 2 of them where assigned to another driver who cried he didn’t feel like driving out of state so I got stuck with them. On top of these 3 jobs I did 5 other jobs tonight and all in an 9.5 hour period, one of the 2other drivers on with me tonight did only 5 calls and the other did only 3. I know I check their run sheets when I got in! I had three jobs that totaled over 300 miles driving, 50+ miles from pick up to drop off one way and I did this three times! These guys never take late calls and often claim they don’t have time to do a job 2 hours prior to the end of their shift, and these are light service jobs like a tire change, our of gas, jump start or lock out. I often stay late and assist our members because that is my job, these guys don’t want to work. I am definitely not getting paid what I am worth; on top of getting screwed out of two raises and my truck. A truck I took a lot of pride in; when I came it to the company over a year ago every time I looked at it I felt as though I needed tetanus shot! Now you can eat off the floor. All the equipment was maintained and the truck was properly equipped for most jobs and has over 200,000 miles on it. Our members would get into the truck and ask if it where new! I mean I cleaned this thing inside and out, used a steam cleaner to clear the gung off the windows, seats and floors, applied touch up paint to the cab and body as well I washed it daily & waxed it weekly. Now this no talent hack stamps his feet and cries I like this truck better and I want it because its clean and neat and everything is here. He’s had it for about a week and its already totally thrashed, back to its original condition when I first got into it. This guy is a slob and a half, every truck he’s ever driven he’s been thrown out of by the regular full timers assigned those trucks because he’s a slob. He first got into my truck as a chance of luck, I came in a few hours early and took out a wrecker for the night since my truck was on the road. When he came in his truck was out of service; I had towed it in because of an electrical fire so he got the only remaining flat bed that was in the lot; MINE! And I got screwed, blued and tattooed. The last straw was last night when he decided he didn’t want to work and I got shafted. I’m debating weather or not to hand in my resignation or not. Monday I will go have a sit down with the bosses and see what happens. I can only take so much, granted it the benefits are top notch and the highest in the state, the tips used to be good too. When I first started I was averaging an extra two grand a month in tips alone, here lately I’m lucky to take in a hundred bucks. Because of these lazy drivers I get extra work and takes longer to get from one job to the next because of my increased work load. I average about 15 to 17 calls a night on the weekends now; prior to these guys it was 5 to 7 calls a night. The dispatchers don’t even know what they are doing; but, since I don’t kiss their asses and bring the coffees every night I get it in the end! Every week the top three drivers for each class is posted for the calls per hour they do. I’m almost always on the list and I work over nights! Whoa this started out as a mumm as to weather or not I should tell’em to park the truck in their ass and blew up to be a full blown rant!
