Stars thump Kings

The Stars did waste any time letting the Kings know they were in town for business not pleasure. Miettinen scored just 19 seconds after the game started. Coach Tippet changed up the lines and the biggest one was putting Morrow, Modano, and Lindros together. Each time they were on the ice they dominated the puck. They had 2goals, one from Morrow and one from Modano, and five assist. Modano’s goal came after a huge blast from Lindros that rebounded out to the middle of the slot where Mo was waiting and pushed it past Cloutier. The team as a whole looked really good. Each man took care of their business and finished off hits and were just tenacious scrapping for the pucks in the corners. It was clear that the Kings were not ready for the new physical play the Stars are showing now. When the Stars made Morrow the team captain it was because of how he plays the game. He is fearless and will not give up on any play until the whistle has blown. He is never intimidated and backs down from no one. Coach Tippet said he wanted the rest of the team to follow Morrows example and become a tough more respected team. When I was watching the game and saw 5’10” 180lb Stephane Robidas stand up to 6’4” 265lb Raitis Ivanans I knew right then this was a much better team than it had been the past few years. You can skate as fast and as fancy as you want but it’s not enough to win games. Hockey is still a rough sport if your not checking players coming into your zone then they are going to blow right by and be on top of your goalie before he can even know what is happening. Now if you catch him coming down and time out a good hit that rattles his chiclets loose and makes him have to straighten his bucket up then the next time he comes down that’s all he is going to be thinking about. The toughness extends all the way to the net too. Turco is known for his amazing saves and great puck handling skills out of the net. He has also shown in past that he is a tough player that can take a hit. That was proven last night when he took a slap shot in the side of his mask. It was immediately apparent that he was stunned by the blast but continued on with the play making three more saves before covering up the puck to stop play. After a quick visit from trainer Dave Surprenant and a new mask he was ready to go again. He posted 32 saves on 33 shots. The one goal came off an awkward bounce off the boards. When Turco went to cut off the dump in the puck redirected and came across the bottom of the left circle and was shot in by Ivanans. The Stars will play the Kings again Saturday. It unusual for teams to play back to back games especially in the same building. This is going to be one hell of a game too. The Kings were pretty well embarrassed and will be looking for redemption. What they will probably find is an ass whoopin.
This is the second most embarrassing thing to happen to the Dallas Cowboys. The first and forever to be the worst embarrassment was the way Jones treated Tom Landry. He fired Tom Landry with a simple phone call. No press conference no recognition of being the only coach of the Dallas Cowboys since they came into the league in 1960 much less having the 3rd most wins in the NFL. Jones is a man with no respect for this game or this team. It is not about giving the fans a winning team it’s about selling tickets. Since he bought the team in 1989 they are 109 wins to 133 loses a far cry from Landry’s 270 wins and 178 loses. Now he is embarrassing the team again with bringing Terrell Owens here knowing all of the problems he has had with his past teams. When a team cuts a player before the season is even over not asking anything for them or even trying to trade them you have to know that player is major trouble. Some how Jones didn’t understand that concept but how could he, after all he is not a coach he just thinks he is. He wasn’t thinking about anything other than money. Now instead of making he is about to lose and lose big. As Owens continues to have his public meltdown Parcells will play him less and less. So far he has had one decent at best game. For the season he has 17 catches for 232 yards and only 1 touchdown. These numbers are so bad he does not even show up in the top 30 in the NFL in receptions or receiving yards. Just a side note here Terry Glenn is 27th with 20 catches for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns. I know you think well that’s not a big difference in numbers. As Paul Harvey would say “and now the rest of the story” Owens has had 40 pass attempts to Glenn’s 27 and has 4 drop passes 2nd most in the NFL. Could that be right? Glenn has 20 catches out of 27 and the GREAT T.O. has 17 out of 40? Imagine if Jones had went out and picked up one of the decent free agents that were available and made Glenn the primary receiver. Parcells knows football and will play the players and call the plays that will give his team the best chance to win. When he calls on Glenn more look for T.O. to get louder with more outburst and then Jones will once again overstep his boundaries and try to influence the coach’s decisions. That’s when you can count on Parcells walking away from this team as well he should. This is not some fresh out of college coach. This is Bill Parcells who has already proven himself as one of the greats and destined to be in the Hall of Fame. He came to Dallas because he loves the game and wants a shot at winning one more ring but if you think for a second that he will take any crap off of a snot nosed team owner you are mistaken. Personally I would love nothing more than to see Parcells at a press conference take off his whistle and put it around Jones’s neck then pop that ball cap on his head and tell him there ya go big guy the teams is all yours. That would just be poetic justice for an ass that has destroyed the image of Americas Team. . To all of the die hard Cowboy homers that want to bring up the ‘90’s and the Super Bowl wins you won’t get an argument from me if you give credit where credit is due. Jones had no clue how to draft a player. It was Jimmy Johnson that hand picked those players that would become the last dynasty of the NFL. Ok second to last depending on your point of view with the Patriots. Point being it was Johnson and not Jones behind the success of the Cowboys in the 90’s. When Jones started forcing his opinion and ideas on Johnson the honeymoon was over and Johnson left the team. Mind you here is a coach that left a team just weeks after winning the Super Bowl. How bad does an organization have to be to run off a coach that just won them the championship? It’s time to face the reality. This team will never yes I said never ever be a championship caliber team as long as Jones has anything to do with this team in any way. Don’t get to excited at the fact that Jones is 64 his son Stephan is already well embedded in the team and I am sure will just continue the gross mismanagement of what once was a great team. The day Tom Landry was no longer a Cowboy was the day I no longer called myself a Cowboy fan.
College football has many big rivalries. Notre Dame and Navy, Penn State and Michigan State, and UCLA and Stanford just to name a few. This weekend is one that ranks right up at the top when Texas and OU meet again at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The rivalry goes all the way back to 1900. The Longhorns beat the Sooners 28-2 that first meeting and the game was in Austin. In 1901 and again in 1903 the two teams played each other twice. Texas won the first four games, the first game played in 1903 was a tie, then two more wins for Texas. OU got its first win was in 1905 in Oklahoma City. The first Dallas game was in 1912 and became the permanent annual site of the Red River Shootout in 1929.The neutral site has been one factor that has made this rivalry so big. The meeting halfway allows both teams to have a large fan representation and with a capacity of 68,252 it can really get to rocking. These two teams have had many games in past that had National Championship implications. This year Texas is ranked number 7 and OU 13th. The BCS will release the first official standings October 15th. It doesn’t look like a Championship will be on the line but it could be huge for each teams future. With both teams loosing key players next year bragging rights will be a strong recruiting tool. One thing you can count on for sure is it will be a big game with lots of emotion. It never seams to really matter how the season has gone for either team leading up to the big game. When they cross paths in Dallas they find away to raise their level of play.
OK I just want to go on record as saying I never said this would be a pretty season. The Stars proved that point too well last night. I had flash backs to March 3rd when the Stars faced Phoenix for their first game back after the extended Olympic break. In both games the Stars did not get the memo on the starting time for the game. In Phoenix they never did get their clocks set right, just cleaned out really thorough with a 6 to 2 loss. Last night they stumbled through the first two periods as if they were still on practice speed. They always seamed to be just a stride behind the Av’s players. They were not showing any drive to get to the puck and finish off their plays. There was way too many Av’s standing around in front of Turco unchallenged. It is times like that you miss Derian Hatcher. If you want to see how big an advantage it is to have a player hanging around the crease just watch Morrow. He is like a fly at a picnic to goalies around the league. You just can not get rid of him. As a result of hanging in there and taking his punishment he picks up a fair amount of trash shots. Trash or not they still count. The Stars could not stay out of penalty trouble the first period which kept their shots on goal down to only seven. They took five minors resulting in a two man advantage for the Avs twice. Turco kept them in this game stopping 22 of 24 shots in the first. The Turco of old was back that’s for sure. Many of the first period saves were huge at one point he was actually flat out on his back but never took his eye off of the puck and flipped out his glove hand just in time to keep the puck from sneaking through just inside the low corner. The first goal that found its way past Turco came on the first 5 on 3 power play just past the half way point in the first period with the second coming just 46 seconds later with the Avs still the power play but now a five on four with Halpern coming out after the first goal. The second period showed some improvement with the Stars beginning to play with more intensity. The Stars came out and you could see the hits picking up. The more aggressive play led to an evening out of the stats. The Avs were held to ten shots on goal while the Stars could only manage seven. Both teams had an equal five penalties for thirteen penalty minutes and each team was scoreless in the second. Even the one fight of the game came in the second between and was a definite draw. The Stars Barnaby and Laperriere each took two minutes for roughing 3:43 into the second. After exiting the penalty boxes it took the two pugilist three seconds to become combative again. This time it was a lot of pulling, jerking, and what looked like their impressions of Joey Lawrence and Edyta Sliwinski doing the Cha Cha. I’m pretty certain Bruno Tonioli would have not scored them more than a two. It ended up much like the rest of the second period, a draw. To be a fly on the wall in the Stars locker room would have been priceless. Whatever was said and whoever said it hit a nerve somewhere in this team. When Dallas took the ice in the third it was as if they finally realized that the regular season had begun. It reminded me of my oldest daughter getting ready for school in the mornings. Hit the snooze once and she still looks like she is asleep. Hit it the second time and there is some movement but the lights are not all the way on. Then before hitting it for the third time the numbers lit up in blue register and all at once the eye fly open the feet hit the floor and there is no stopping her. The Stars were the same way. They took control of the game and they did it fast. Just a minute and twenty-eight seconds into the third Lindros set up Modano for a blast from the left circle beating Theodore for the Stars first goal. While the first goal took 41 minutes and 28 seconds the second would only take the 28 seconds. An impressive pass across the crease timed out perfect with the young Loui Ericksson breaking down the right side. A quick snap of the wrist and the second goal was in the back of the net and that quick it was a brand new game all tied up two to two. Dallas did not let up the rest of the third was spent almost entirely in the Av’s end of the ice. They put18 shots on goal compared to the 14 in the first two periods combined. The learned their manors also with no penalties in the third. Well that is until Sydor did his best Hong Kong Fooie impersonation on Milan Hejduk’s stick. With play in the Dallas zone as the last few seconds ticked off Sydor took an unnecessary slashing penalty just as the horn sounded to end the third period. Dallas started the five minute overtime a man down for two minutes. The Stars penalty killers were able to hold strong. Just as Sydor’s penalty ended Turco gained control of a loose puck and looked up to see Sydor bolting out of the box. A beautiful pass from Turco glided down the center of the ice where Sydor picked it up in stride and went one on one with Theodore. Sydor snapped a wrist shot over the net minders right shoulder and buried the puck into the back of the net giving the Stars a 3 to 2 OT win. Exciting? Yes very but I really do not want to go through another season of come from behind wins. The Stars set an NHL record last season with ten wins after trailing entering the third period. That’s just too much excitement. Bring back the get to two goals and then let the Defense go to work bogging down the blue line and pestering forwards with constant back checking. Those days are long gone in the new NHL. The bottom line is a win is a win and the Stars streak of wining season opener games spans back 10 years now.

Dallas Cowboys Distracted?

So I heard a little rumor about a distraction in Dallas. Something about a player and his off the field incident distracting the Cowboys as they prepared for a game against the Titans. I think rumor is an understatement more like a bunch of made up fiction from sports writers and reporters who granted are not known for always reporting the facts. Case in point the reporters that of five major league baseball players use of steroids and illegal performance-enhancing drugs publicly after a statement made by Jason Grimsley. Now the federal prosecutor overseeing the investigation says the report has significant inaccuracies. Go figure somehow I doubt they will have a breaking report to report the information they just recieved saying they screwed up once again and slandered players names for no reason other than they wanted a juicey story to report on. The Cowboys despite the so called distractions were able to win impressively over the Titans 45 to 14. OK, granted, the Titans are not a powerhouse team this year going 0 and 4 so far but, to put up the numbers like Dallas did against any professional team is impressive. Now the distractions just have to continue right? I mean this is Dallas, and if there isn’t a legitimate distraction the sports reporting world with all of its insight will just make one up. So this week it will be the return of T.O. to Philadelphia for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Again this will only be a distraction to those who report on it and not the players. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the Eagle’s team site. They have a poll asking What is your focus Vs. Dallas? The choices are: 1. I want T.O. hit hard , 2. Scoring vs. aggressive defense, 3. All I care about is a win, 4. Mostly T.O. but a win also, 5. Reaching Bledsoe, and 6. The Dallas offense is very tough. So what’s on the minds of the Eagle fans? So far 60.5% have voted for 3. All I care about is a win. Wow that is the same things the players on both teams are saying as well as the fans in Dallas. Amazing huh? Just a closing thought. I encourage all of you to contact the reporters that just continue to make exaggerated claims and reports that many times have no foundation to them at all and can lead to serious issues not only for the athlete mentioned but also his family. You can find an e-mail address, phone number, or at least a mailing address on almost any reporter. Whatever media source they work for usually will have a web site where you can find this information. Let the reporter know exactly what you thought about their article or report. Then make sure the magazine, news paper, radio or TV stations know also. Maybe we can get them to stick more to the facts and less to hype and rumors. If not at least you can have fun tossing some darts their way for a change.

NASCAR Who is the TOP GUN?

Here is a question for ya. Who is the best driver of the modern era? Being a Stewart fan I would say he is the most talented driver in NASCAR. However I am also fairly open minded and can see an argument for Harvick and Jimmie Johnson as well. Looking at all three you can quickly see why they are the best of the drivers out there. The one thing that sets them apart is Stewart has two NASCAR championships seasons as well as Busch and IRL titles. Still you have look at how Johnson has dominated the points over the past two years only to miss out on a championship as a result of the chase format. Here is a guy who has been in NASCAR for six years and finished in the top ten each year, the top five the last four years and had it not been for a cut tire on the last race in 2005 he would have three consecutive second place years. Yes I know second place is just the first loser and until that title is his he can not be considered the best right now. As for Harvick you may have to look a little deeper to support a claim of being one of the best right now. His best Cup season was 2003 with 11 top fives and 18 top tens and one win. He finished fifth in points for the year. It is not so much what he has done in the Nextel series, but in NASCAR in general. In 2001, a season all NASCAR fans will never forget we lost a legend when on February 18th at Daytona International Speedway Dale Earnhardt Sr. died in a last lap wreck. That year Richard Childress chose to put Harvick in the 29 car replacing the number 3. He won his first cup race in just his third start. That same year he raced a full Busch schedule and won the Busch Championship. He finished 9th in the Cup series with 2 wins, six top fives, and sixteen top tens. He became the first driver in NASCAR history to run both Cup and Busch full time. Also he was the first ever to win the Busch series and Cup rookie of the year in the same year. He is also one of only two drivers to have at least two wins in the top three NASCAR series Craftsman, Busch, and Nextel. Now he has himself in a position for another first. That would be to win the Busch series and the Cup series championships in the same season. The Busch series is all but a technicality with a 729 point lead with just five races to go. He is fifth in the cup 96 points back of Burton. He has a legitimate shot at winning the Nextel Cup Championship. Well just one man's opinion but for what it is worth there you go free for the taking. I am sure you will all agree with me with all of the wonderful points I made. Yeah right this is after all NASCAR where everyone has a different point of view and their's is right is what makes this a great sport to be a fan of.
Buck Showalter fired as Texas Rangers manager. Showalter was hired back in 2002 and turned the team around and had them in second place just three games out of first with a record of 89 wins and 73 loses in 2004. The Rangers had cut the payroll from $100 million to $70 million trading away Palmerio, Gonzalez, and MVP A.Rod. Buck took this no name young team through a rough season using 17 different starters. One after another the pitchers the Rangers had counted on went down to injuries. Despite all of this Buck delivered a winning season and was named the 2004 manager of the year. Names we all know now Michael Young, Hank Blalock, and Mark Teixiera stepped up and became leaders of the team. In 2005 Rangers fans were very optimistic. That would not last long. Bullpen relievers Frank Francisco and Carlos Almanzar were out early both with Tommy John surgery. Then the controversial Kenny Rogers got a 20 game suspension for attacking a camera man. Then in typical Ranger fashion GM John Hart put Ryan Drese on waivers, and was quickly picked up by the Washington Nationals. Hart never even attempted to try and make a trade for Drese just simply let him go. This same time last year Rangers GM John Hart steps aside and in comes 28 year old Jon Daniels moving up from asst. GM. Young blood comes in with new ideas? No, John Hart never left the Rangers he just stepped aside. I have no idea what that really means but it was assumed that he was still calling the shots and Daniels was just the yes man. It did not take long to see the old Ranger ways coming back again. The biggest blunder was trading Soriano for Wilkerson and Terrmel. Then an out of control trading frenzy that left the Rangers again weak in their pitching. Adam Eaton missed most of the season with a finger injury from a spring training game. Kevin Millwood had the big numbers posting a league leading ERA of 2.86 after coming back from an injury with the Indians. What did Texas get from him? How about 16 wins and 12 loses with a 4.52 ERA. Inflated just a little bit wouldn't you say? Not bad for a $60 million dollar pitcher. Oh wait let us not forget the great Padillia. Not bad as far as 15 wins and 10 loses but with a 4.50 ERA. Not to mention the embarrassing incident in Chicago where he hit A.J. Pierzynski TWICE. Better yet how about the assault on the Angels batters, in particular Vladimir Guerrero that ended up in a bench clearing brawl back in Texas. We won't even talk about what they traded away for this mess. Yes actually I will. Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez, two of the players the Rangers lost in the big six man trade, are still playing baseball with the Padres. Now that is not how you manage a team. When I say manage I am referring to the GM not the manager. Buck's job was to manage the players he was given. In 1994 Buck was AL manager of the year. The 1995 season was lost to a players strike. In 1996 Steinbrenner fires Buck and brings in Joe Torre. That year the Yankees (the team that Buck built) won the World Series. In 1998 Buck is hired by the new Arizona Diamondbacks. Their very first season they went 65 wins and 97 loses and a fifth place finish. The very next year Buck turned the team around and had them 100 wins 62 loses and division champs. They lost to the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs. Still for a second year team you can not complain at all. In 2000 they went 85 wins 77 loses and 3rd place in their division. At the end of the 2000 season Buck was fired. In 2001 the Diamondbacks that Buck led the first three years went to the World Series and won over the Yankees four games to three. So now the Rangers again make an incredibly stupid move and let a true asset to this organization go. Until Hicks wipes out the front office staff and brings in a team that will focus on winning and winning alone the Texas Rangers will always be a middle of the road team. Don't focus on how many tickets you sale, and not how much merchandise you sell. Not what your profit is at the end of the year either. Nothing at all but winning. If you win and bring a Championship team to Arlington you will be successful and the organization will be profitable. All you have to do is look at the other teams here in the immediate area. The Cowboys, Mavericks, and the Stars (a Hicks team go figure that one out) each have put together winning teams and if you were to see the bottom line profits I think you would just be blown away. You will see just how much revenue this area will bring in. This is not Kansas Toto and we will not be satisfied with just any pro baseball team. Make the Rangers Champions or sale them to someone who will !!

Dallas Stars Season Starts

RELENTLESS PURSUIT NHL 2007 Season is here. That means in 26 weeks and four days the Dallas Stars will again be crowned the Western Conference Pacific Division Champs. As well as accepting their third President’s Trophy on their way to a second Lord Stanley’s Cup. Captain Morrow will lead the Stars into Colorado and battle the Avalanche. This is a rivalry that runs deep with a lot of past history. Whining Roy is long gone, Forsberg has moved to Philly and Foote to Columbus. Sakic is still there and now he has names like Hejduk, Laperriere, Sauer, and a name familiar to us here in Dallas Turgeon. Even though this is not the powerful team that won the Stanley Cup in 1996 and 2001, they are still potent enough to take serious. The Stars have to put the early out from last year’s playoffs and the up and down preseason where they went 3 – 4. Now they need to focus on the overtime win last week over Tampa Bay to end that preseason. The journey to another Championship begins now. It is long and at times very tough but one that must be made. I am up for it. I have trained for five months. I had the recliner serviced and the mini fridge stocked. Charter is paid up and Direct TV ready to go in an emergency. The crock-pot for the cheese dip, the microwave for popcorn are clean and ready for service. Schwans delivery is back on schedule for the late night meals when the Stars are on the west coast. The Stars flag was brought out of storage and waves proudly off of the Carport again. Put thunderstruck back as the ring tone on my cell. I picked up the #9 KOHO from the dry cleaners today so it’s good to go for another season. Reload the remote with fresh AA’s for accurate volume control so each blast of the train horns rock the game room as if F.W.W.R. was rolling right through it. So it’s go time Stars Fans. Finish putting the dinner away and get the kids tucked in. Park your butt in the front row, easy on the glass and get ready for another action packed season with YOUR DALLAS STAAAARRRRRRRRRRSSSSSS!!
Tony Stewart wins despite running out of gas on the last lap of the Banquet 400 in Kansas. Without having to worry about points the #20 team could take a chance and go for it on fuel mileage. The gamble paid off. Smoke had built a lead of almost 18 seconds over 2nd place Mears. That would not have been enough except for one thing, Mears ran out of gas also. I have to admit I was on the edge of my seat for the finish of this one. Way to go SMOKE! While we are talking NASCAR the chase is starting to separate the haves from the have nots as in chances of winning. Dale Jr. and Jimmie Johnson failed to gain any ground and stayed 7 and 8 while Gordon joined them dropping 4 spots to 6th and 120 points back of the leader Jeff Burton. With all the talk in NASCAR about the “Young Guns†how ironic the top three are made up of two veterans and a rookie. To be honest with Stewart out I have no complaints on any of these three winning. Jeff Burton has been in NASCAR since 1988 starting out driving for his father John in five races that year and finishing 11th twice. His first win came in 1990 driving for Sam Ard. In 1994 Jeff went full time in the cup series and won rookie of the year. In 1996 he joined Roush racing. In 1997 Burton went on a 4 year streak where he posted 15 of his 17 career wins and finished in the top five in points each yeah. His best finish was 3rd in points in 2000. Mark Martin joined Roush racing back in 1988. In 1989 he finished 3rd in points. Since then he has finished out of the top ten in points only twice and 12 times finished in the top 5 in points. He finished second to Dale Sr. twice once in 1990 by 26 points. Then again in 1998 he finished second to Gordon and in 2002 was 38 points behind Tony Stewart when Smoke won his first Championship. Come on are you kidding me? These numbers are unbelievable for a driver to go that long and come that close so many times and not take home a title is just a crime. The rookie of the bunch Denny Hamlin at age 24 driving for Joe Gibbs racing took over the #11 in 2005 late in the season. In the last seven races he posted 3 top tens. A point that needs to be made is Denny has come into the Cup series and conducted himself in a very professional manor. Not just in his show of respect for other drivers and teams in the garage area but also on the track. Many times the new young guys come in and want to establish themselves immediately. Taking chances and driving aggressively putting themselves and every other driver on the track at risk. Well there you go. Just a little closer look at the front runners.
