Found a few things that will help me make better skins. Of course the best tools tend to cost money but i'm happy with what free sites i found today and these were;
a collage maker that is really simple to use, you can resize the images, move them around after laying down many images (unlike with paint), borders already attached to the images as soon as you lay them. you can do more stuff but the collage i made today looks ok.
a text creator with many effects and fonts that also has a clear background, the sizes of the font made are really good too.
some more code, i am getting a better idea of where to fit images now but not great at this yet.
Things i still need to work out;
how to get the status header to have borders that fit to the width of the section that is on. i've seen it done on here and looked at their code but haven't figured this out yet.
wtf i have done wrong with my DnA skin as i have lost borders and background color has gone to black as default because of something i have added or done because the code is still there for borders but something has stopped it from working.
I also have improved a few of my old skins with my new info, and made a Keanu Reeves 2 skin, but site lag means i don't feel inclined to continue making skins today. Have some ideas of how i am going to improve the first Keanu one but like i said, lag.
Nice to see some of my skins have been ripped a few times as well. Whether that was for the skin itself or the codes i am using it's all good.
And yes i am aware that my skins are mostly very bright and flashy, lol. I enjoy making things in that style.
Think i'm obessessed with skins, lol. Anyway...this is just gonna be my fubar diary for now.
I've done updates to most of my skins: Added effects and features to them and removed or replaced stuff i wasn't keen on. Also learning how to fit images better to the page itself so attempting to do that.
I started learning how to do them about a month ago, and just by doing a couple of days each week i'm learning quite a bit of stuff. Nothing that advanced yet but i'm hoping i can get really good at learning CSS because i'm enjoying doing the simpler stuff. and finding it (mostly) fun working out where i have gone wrong and what this site let's you do. I've said it before but this template on here is great to use and CSS seems fairly nice language.
Going to finish working on the rest and then start making new ones with the flashy gifs i've got ready and waiting. I do make bright and over the top skins but that's what i enjoy making. There are a few calmer skins in there too, the fan/tribute type, and i shall be making some more of those too. Feel free to recommend anything you'd like me to make that nobody else has done yet, i may or may not make it.
Might make a blog on how to make your own skins. There are some good, and really helpful, blogs already on here but i didn't find any that went into everything you can do, and there is a lot.
And of course i'm gonna try to rtf the favour in between doing all that. :)
Skins i have made so far;
A lot of rainbow ones using gradients, gifs, or both.
A few gaming ones, Rez, Mortal Kombat, and Terranigma so far. Rez needs a little improvement.
Matrix and keanu reeves ones, the matrix one is better gonna try and work out how to improve the keanu one when i can.
A couple of monochrome ones, and Metropolis is quite ochre and not flashy.
I've had a very fun past couple of days making them and then editing them to look better. The site actually makes it easy for you to make them and you can do some amazing stuff using really basic code (i do have basic HTML knowledge but before this week i had 0 experience of CSS and found this language was really nice to work with). I've not made anything that astounding compared to others on here but it's been good learning something new and trying that out and i'm going to learn more and tweak stuff as i go on.
If there are any newbies, like me, wanting to get creative you should give it a go, if so then look under the MY tab and find SKINS then go in there and click on CREATE A SKIN. Maybe you already have and want to leave some advice on here for others (and me)?
I do recommend using a HTML color picker to choose your colors precisely, or find a table of colours and use the correct words for them, as you'll have a larger pool of colours to work with that may look better. But if you don't even want to do that you could just choose any regular colour you can think of and type that in as it'll be likely to work.
Use google to find help with what you want to do, say you want to create a fancy border well you can google how to do those. You might even find a good webschool that has loads of info on how to make a wide variety of things and have fun doing just that.
Also, if you're going to use gifs or jpgs you'll need to find a decent image host, imgur is a good one as they never delete your pics and the site never seems to go down either.
Use c&p (copy and paste) to save time on repeatedly typing out the same code for any effects that will be the same in each section that you need to edit. Also use ctrl+f to check your code: say there is an image in the wrong place or a color is not right and you want to change it then look for it that way instead of scrolling through everything.
If you see something you like on someone elses page and want to use it you can view source to see how they did it or for a more precise result you can inspect element, or for image sizes you can view image info. These should be under right click on your mouse/track pad.
