ABBOTSFORD, B. Arian Foster Elite Jersey .C. -- Nick Tuzzolino spends most of his time by the blue-line, but he had a goal scorers touch Sunday. The defenceman scored twice, including once in overtime, to lead the Abbotsford Heat to a 5-4 win over the Toronto Marlies on Sunday in American Hockey League action. Tuzzolino scored 1:08 into overtime, taking a feed from Greg Nemisz and beating goalie Jussi Rynnas glove side for his third of the season. "I just jumped up in the play, got a good pass from Nemo, and shot high," said Tuzzolino. "I heard it hit bar, I saw the light and that was it." After failing to make the AHL club out of training camp Tuzzolino made the best of his time with the ECHLs Utah Grizzlies, where he scored seven goals in 60 games in a leadership role. "Nicks played some good minutes for us," said Abbotsford head coach Troy Ward. "The things that we saw today are really a product of how he played in the ECHL. Heres a guy who was a go-to guy ...holding the fort down a lot. (The Grizzlies) were really disappointed that they didnt have him in their first round when they got beat." Despite the offensive outburst, the six-foot-five defenceman -- who had never previously scored twice in a game, dating back to his major junior career -- has no illusions of what is required of him. "I play a simple, shutdown role with Testy (J.P. Testwuide) as my D partner," said Tuzzolino. "Our job is to give time so (our offensive defencemen) can go out and do their jobs." Max Reinhart, playing his first AHL game, also scored twice for Abbotsford (42-26-8), with David Eddy also scoring the first goal of his professional career. Hugh Jessiman assisted on both of Reinharts goals. "My two wingers were making passes right on the tape, which in junior you dont always get," said Reinhart, whos junior team the Kootenay Ice were eliminated from the Western Hockey League playoffs. "The guys are a lot stronger (than in junior) but having said that if you find open space, your teammates are going to find you." Leland Irving played well enough to win, stopping 18 shots in his first game since March 30. He missed five games while awaiting the birth of his daughter. "A win elevates anybodys spirits," said Ward. "But at the end of the day what was most important is that he got 60-plus minutes and has a feel for the puck again. Well look at the tape -- theres some plays that he probably wants back." Abbotsford had already clinched the Western Conferences fourth spot and will play the Milwaukee Admirals in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs. The Heat are on a seven-game winning streak and will need that momentum against a team that they have beat just once in four tries this season. "Weve had our struggles in Milwaukee this year," said Ward. "Theyve got really good stick skills. (But) it didnt matter to us as what team (we drew.) When were playing our best hockey right now, you might as well play your best." Matt Frattin scored twice for the visiting Marlies (44-24-8). Philippe Dupuis and Carter Ashton also scored, while Nazem Kadri had two assists. Toronto finished second and will likely take on the Rochester Americans in the first round. Rynnas made 21 saves in the loss. Abbotsford opened the scoring 9:37 into the first. Hugh Jessimans shot from the top of the face-off circle was stopped by Rynnas but Reinhart was there to bury the rebound. Resident tough guy Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond showed a balance of power and skill to set up the Heats second goal. The seventh-year pro brushed off a Toronto defender and though his first centring pass was blocked, he corralled it and fed Eddy in front of the net with a perfect pass. Eddy, playing just his fourth AHL game, fired a wrist shot past Rynnas. The Marlies got on the board with a power-play goal at 17:49. Stuart Percys point shot was kicked right to Dupuis at the side of the net and he snapped the rebound home for his 15th of the season. Reinhart recorded his second of the game at 6:48 of the second period. Jessiman forced a turnover in the corner and centred for the 20-year-old rookie in the low slot where Reinhart found the net. However, the Marlies tied the game with power-play goals 1:43 apart. Frattin buried a rebound off a Joe Colborne one-timer for his 13th of the season. Then Jake Gardiner threw the puck toward the net and it squeaked through the pads of a sprawling Irving where Ashton opportunistically shovelled it home for his 21st of the campaign. Toronto -- whose power play is ranked last in the AHL and was just three for their last 34 opportunities -- scored three times in seven power-play chances on Sunday. The Heat had a chance to regain the lead in the third period when Jay Rosehill took a boarding major but it was the Marlies that had the best scoring chance. Irving needed to make his best saves of the game to keep Ryan Hamilton and then Jerry DAmigo from giving Toronto the lead. The Heat made it 4-3 when Adam Estoclet dangled his way across the blue-line and fed a streaking Tuzzolino, who redirected the feed into the net for his second of the year. However the Marlies tied the game again just 76 seconds later. Frattin buried his second of the game after taking a beautiful backhand feed from Kadri. That set up overtime, where Tuzzolino snapped in his second of the game to win it. NOTES: The AHL announced that the Marlies Ben Scrivens was awarded the Harry (Hap) Holmes Memorial Award, awarded to the goaltender(s) on the team with the fewest goal against. Scrivens, who allowed just two goals in Fridays 3-0 loss to Abbotsford, was 22-15-1 with four shutouts and a 2.04 goals against average in his second pro season. Rynnas and Mark Owuya, though contributing the teams impressive 2.30 GAA, did not play enough games to be named alongside Scrivens. "Hes got a chance of doing damage," Gibson explained before Thursdays game against the Pirates. "Hes due." Kubel sure was. He stopped, then puckered up again for another take that will eventually introduce the "Kiss Cam" at the Barclays Center. It was a fitting visual for a day the Nets formally kicked off what they hope will be a love affair with the New York City borough that hasnt had major professional sports since the Dodgers left town in 1957.TORREON, Mexico -- Aron Winter was left to wonder what might have been. Toronto FC crumbled in the second half, conceding four goals as Santos Laguna romped to a 6-2 win on the night and 7-3 on aggregate to advance to the CONCACAF Champions League final against defending champion Monterrey. "We have given away the game," said Winter, the Toronto manager. Toronto started brightly at Estadio Corona on Wednesday and led the second leg 2-1 as the first half neared an end. The second goal by Joao Plata had Winter and his assistants celebrating on the sideline. But the Mexicans scored an injury-time equalizer and then racked up three goals in 10 minutes in the second half before adding another stoppage time score as defensive mistakes cost Toronto dearly. "The crucial moment was the second goal before halftime and the third goal," said Winter. But the Toronto FC manager lamented conceding "four easy goals." Santos also showed its teeth at home in the quarter-final against the Seattle Sounders, pouring in four second-half goals to win 6-1 on the day and 7-3 on aggregate. Plata scored both goals for Toronto. In the other semi, Monterrey tied at Pumas 1-1 and moved into the final 4-1 on aggregate. Santos Lagunas Juan Pablo Rodriguez converted penalties in the 56th and 64th minutes with insurance goals from Oribe Peralta in the 66th and David Luduena in second-half injury time. Herculez Gomez had two in the first half for Santos, both times on floated balls that landed just behind the defence. The teams tied 1-1 last Wednesday in a stormy game at BMO Field that saw two Santos players sent off and a near brawl at the final whistle after Toronto fullback Ashtone Morgan was head-butted. Peralta drove at the Canadian goal after a good through ball in the second minute but a Canadian defender forced him to pause and his shot deflected wide off a leg. Nick Soolsma found Luis Silva unmarked in front of goal in the fourth minute but the rookie was unable to keep his header down. Santos striker Christian Suarez drove a shot from just outside the box right at Milos Kocic in the 10th minute. The Santos defence was found wanting several times early and Toronto went ahead in the 15th minute on a header by Plata. A Soolsma corner dropped to an unmarked Silva, whose close-range shot was cleared off the line by a Santos defender. But the ball went straight to the five-foot-two Plata who nodded it in. Several other Santos attacks were negated by close offside calls in the first half. At the other end, Soolsma was a constant threat down the right side. Gomez tied it up in the 31st minute after a long floated ball found him inside the Toronto defence, with defender Miguel Aceval a step behind. The U.S. international whipped a low right-footed shot past Kocic, who didnt have a chance, from just inside the box. The goal came after Toronto losst possession on its own throw-in. Arian Foster White Jersey. Peralta came close in the 42nd minute when he deflected a hard cross over the bar. Toronto scored seconds after when the ensuing goal kick went to Soolsma who flicked it on to Plata and the pint-sized Ecuadorians right-footed shot from the edge of the box beat Oswaldo Sanchez in the 43rd. Santos tied it up in first-half injury time when a long ball found Gomez a step ahead of Ty Harden this time. The Americans right-footer shot found the corner as a close offside decision finally went the way of the Mexicans. Gomez had a glorious chance at his hat trick in the 54th when a free kick at the side of the box found him all alone. But his shot squibbed wide. Julian de Guzman triggered the first penalty when he took down Suarez at the edge of the box on the right side. Toronto argued the call but Honduras referee Jose Pineda was unmoved. Rodriguez fired a high shot down the middle of the goal in the 56th minute and Toronto assistant coach Bob De Klerk was subsequently ejected for jawing at the officials. Aceval gave away another spot kick when he handled the ball while trying to dive to head away an Ivan Estrada cross from close range near the byline. Rodriguez slammed home another high shot in the 64th. "I dont know if it was really a 100 per cent penalty, but I think it was given too quickly," said Winter. The bottom fell out for Toronto two minutes later when Peralta flicked home a shot after the ball found its way to him in the box from a short corner. Luduena added to the pain when he curled home a shot in second-half injury time. With Santos holding an away goal, Toronto had to win or play to a higher-scoring tie to advance to the final of the club championship for North and Central America and the Caribbean. Another 1-1 tie would have forced extra time and possibly penalties. The lone MLS side in the final four, Toronto has already made Canadian soccer history by advancing this far. Despite a quarter-final win over the defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy, Toronto is now a combined 1-4-2 in league and CONCACAF Champions League play this season. On the MLS front, Winters club is 0-3-0 and has not scored in 208 minutes. Santos (9-2-2) leads the Mexican standings and is unbeaten in seven games at home this season. A 3-1 win over Toluca on Sunday extended its league win streak to five games. Toronto was without big striker Danny Koevermans, who picked up a second yellow last week, while Eric Avila and Logan Emory are cup-tied. Santos Carlos Darwin Quintero and Osmar Mares missed the game in the wake of last weeks red cards. Torreon is located in central Mexico, some 800 kilometres northwest of Mexico City. Its population is more than 600,000. Pumas, down 3-0 after the first leg, hosted defending champion and fellow Mexican side Monterrey in the other semifinal Wednesday. ' ' '
