His mother, Jessica Tongate, told Vigil on Tuesday that her son had been reluctant to seek treatment before the latest incident but now agrees it is a good idea. My first concern is that he gets treatment, she said.
The tall, lanky teenager, who appeared Tuesday with the sides of his head shaved and a mop of spiky, maroon-colored hair on top, turns 18 on Sept. 30, he told Vigil. Maciag said Darren Tongate who dropped out of school in the eighth grade suffers from panic attacks and anxiety and would not do well if transferred to the countys adult jail at that time.
Vigil agreed adult jail could be a problem for the teen and scheduled a release hearing for Sept. 20 to determine if a supervision plan can be worked out with his mother. Darren Tongate also is charged with evidence tampering and being a minor under the influence of alcohol. |
