So tonight, I went to see Les Mis. I gotta tell you, I was completely taken by surprise at how well done it was. There was not a dry eye in the theater. Including myself. Now I had seen the Broadway production 4 times. And each time I was amazed. But there was something different about the Movie adaptation.
Many broadway enthusiests hated how it was done, but I thought it brought real emotion to the characters. The Sing-Song-Speak is very effective. And the fact that they broguth Colm Wilkenson in to play the priest was just brilliant. The ONLY Problem I had with it, and you can't even call this a problem, was they had to change the key for Russle Crowe to play Javert.
The initial Duet between Marius and Cosette was fantastic. This is one of those parts where I mentioned they brough emotion to the characters. He sang it like a nervous man would. And Eponine, just absolutely heartbreaking. It's one thing to hear it on Broadway in a loud voice, but when you are watching it on screen, the subtle differences become very apparent. If the actors did it as they did with the Broadway production, I do not think it would have translated as well as it did.
I could sit here and ramble about this all day and all night. However, I will not bore you all with my thoughts on this. Just know that it was well worth it and yes, I do plan on seeing it again. Job well done!
"Pieces Of You"
"If You Want Me"
Wow, im gonna totally rip this movie apart. lmfao
~SPOILERS~
This movie is about the Glam Rock movement. You know, the great hair bands that us alive in the 80's and very early 90's grew up with. Bands such as Poison, Guns n Roses, Night Ranger, Pat Benetar all have songs in this flick. Even breaking into some Journey at points. But anyways...
OK, from the offset, small town girl goes to Hollywood to become a star. Julianne Hough (Footloose) is the small town girl. Driving along, she puts her headphones on and starts singing "Sister Christian" and suddenly, the whole buss starts singing along with her. This ultimately becomes a mash up of Sister Christian, Nothin But a Good Time, and Just like Paradise. blech. I can tell right now, that this is going to be absolutely horrible. Short story shorter, girl gets robbed off the bus, bumps into a guy working at the Rock and Roll Bar and gets hired. They have a moment where they are in an old school record store and jam out to a mash up of Juke Box Hero/I Love Rock and Roll. *sigh*
The movie itself has a pretty decent cast. Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamotti, (Rock and Roll God, Rock and Roll has been and Rock and Roll sleay manager respectively.) Remember Constantine from American Idol? Yeah, even he is in it.
Anyways, there is a new Mayor of LA. His wife, played by Catherine Zeta Jones is a church going vixen who is completely against Rock and Roll. There is a scene where she is in a church with a display of Stacee Jaxx (Played by Tom Cruise) pretty much idolized and she is preaching to a group of women about the evils of Stacee King and Rock and Roll (It's apparently obvious that shes lusting after him just by the way she is talking). in typical fashion, the ladies break out into song. Hit Me With your Best Shot. AND THEY DO THE FUCKING THRILLER DANCE TO IT!!! WTF???? Meanwhile, her husband is gettin spanked in the back room by his secritary. Go figure.
To be perfectly honest here, I shut the movie off at this point. I don't think I could watch anymore.... But they got the feel of the 80's down. That's for certain. But there are certain iconic songs that really should not have been messed with. I think that was what turned me off more than anything else. The Mash Ups. I understand it's a Broadway thing. That's how musicals are done. But there is no constant theme such as there is in the mash ups in lets say, Phantom of the Opera or Les Mis. I'm sure eventually I will get back to it, and this blog will be longer... but for right now, wow. Yeah. I was only 25 minutes in. (52) lmfao
To be continued... Maybe.
"Monster You Made"
Lyrics to Breaking Apart :
I remember days and nights were never cold
Had you in my life, I had you there to hold
And I remember love warm as a summer day
But I lost you
And I lost my way
Now I'm in the rain
Begging you please, please
Chorus:
Baby, won't you show me the way back to your heart
Let me see a sign to know if I'm close or far
Lead me back to the road
That leads back to your arms
Back to your arms
Every night another lonely street
I walk down alone
Searching for the light
Your light to lead me home
Leave a candle in the window
And let it shine for me
Take my hand and take these tears away
I can't take the pain
I'm on my knees, begging you please
Chorus
Take my hand
Take me in your arms
I'm out in the dark
Down on my knees, begging you please
Chorus:
Show me the way back your to heart
Let me see a sign to know if I'm close or far
Lead me back to the road
That leads back to your arms
Back to your arms
Back to your arms
"Hate That I Love You"
(feat. Ne-Yo)
[Rihanna:]
That's how much I love you
That's how much I need you
And I can't stand you
Must everything you do make me wanna smile
Can I not like you for awhile? (No....)
[Ne-Yo:]
But you won't let me
You upset me girl
And then you kiss my lips
All of a sudden I forget (that I was upset)
Can't remember what you did
[Rihanna:]
But I hate it...
You know exactly what to do
So that I can't stay mad at you
For too long that's wrong
[Ne-Yo:]
But I hate it...
You know exactly how to touch
So that I don't want to fuss.. and fight no more
Said I despise that I adore you
[Rihanna:]
And I hate how much I love you boy (yeah...)
I can't stand how much I need you (I need you...)
And I hate how much I love you boy (oh whoa..)
But I just can't let you go
And I hate that I love you so (oh..)
[Ne-Yo:]
You completely know the power that you have
The only one makes me laugh
[Rihanna:]
Said it's not fair
How you take advantage of the fact
That I... love you beyond the reason why
And it just ain't right
[Ne-Yo:]
And I hate how much I love you girl
I can't stand how much I need you (yeah..)
And I hate how much I love you girl
But I just can't let you go
But I hate that I love you so
[Both:]
One of these days maybe your magic won't affect me
And your kiss won't make me weak
But no one in this world knows me the way you know me
So you'll probably always have a spell on me...
[Ne-Yo:]
Yeah... Oh...
[Rihanna:]
That's how much I love you (as much as I need you)
That's how much I need you (oh..)
That's how much I love you (oh..)
As much as I need you
[Rihanna:]
And I hate that I love you so
And I hate how much I love you boy
I can't stand how much I need you (can't stand how much I need you)
And I hate how much I love you boy
But I just can't let you go (but I just can't let you go no..)
And I hate that I love you so
And I hate that I love you so.. so...
