I think I have a ghost following me.
I say this in all seriousness.
Let me explain a bit. Last night I decided to make some chapattis when I got home. (it’s a flatbread that I learned to make in Kenya. Very addictive when slathered in butter.) So I make up the dough, roll ‘em out till I have a lot of flat pieces and then I started dropping them in the frying pan one by one until they puffed up and turned the right color.
It was in the middle of me bending over the frying pan that I smelled it.
It wasn’t the smell of the stove or the bread that was slowly turning tan. It wasn’t the smell of the fresh made ones coated in butter next to me.
Instead it was a sweet/musty smell. Like an incense or cologne, but it was something I knew even though I hadn’t smelled it in ages. I know that I used to associate it with a person or place or time or all three but for the life of me I can’t place it.
I kept smelling it all while I made that bread but not when I cooked dinner.
I smelled it again for a moment in my car this morning.
And I keep smelling it here at work….almost as though someone is walking by me every now and then.
I know that it’s nothing I’ve ever smelled here at work. It’s an older memory. No one here smells like that. And it’s nothing on me. It will actually overpower the bit of ginger scent that I have on today (have to counter the smell of stale coffee and onions from Pat).
Did someone that I know die recently that I am not aware of? Or do I just have a random ghost following me?
Either way, it’s gonna drive me nuts until I place where I remember that smell from.
