Do you ever see the emptiness in Christmas? Do you ever look in the eyes of people you pass? Packages bundled high in their arms, a hurried strength in their walk, an endless quest of that final goal. Did you ever look past that into what you see in their eyes? Some have such confusion, others a mission, others excitement. But out there. There are eyes filled with sorrow .Filled with pain and , loneliness, filled with the emptiness of the spirit of Christmas . I am not talking about the ones who you know by there stance should have the emptiness ...They have that emptiness everyday. The ones I am talking about are the people standing besides you in the line at the store, spending money on gifts to share with loved ones, I am talking about the person at the gas pump so lost inside that the world is passing them at such speeds and they do not even notice.
Those people are the ones who’s emptiness is so powerful so devastating so endless.
These people walk through life during this time with outside generated smiles. You know the ones that never come from the heart. Their kind words are never felt only said. Not because they don’t want to share the wonders of the moments going on around them. Its because they cant only because they feel none of it. Their one goal is to make it through this time without anyone seeing the emptiness that fills their soul. Or the hollow of the echo that rings in their heart.
Not that they are alone they have family and friends and loved ones. But the one thing that can fill that emptiness., the one joy that can take away the endless sorrow is gone from them . So they go on and push to that time that there doesn’t have to be the joy of the season Back to that safe place. A place in time that it doesn’t matter if there isn’t a smile in your step or a laugh in your voice. A time when the season is no longer an important part of everyday life. That’s their goal to get to that time. Then the sorrow needs not to show .Life even with the emptiness can go on without a notice.
So if today , tonight, tomorrow, you are standing, waiting thinking. Just take a moment and look inside a person. Reach out and offer a word. Maybe a little “Have a nice day”. Or “its ok” will for a moment in time bring a forgettable second to the hearts of those people filled with emptiness.
I miss you Chick More than anyone will ever know. Mom you were my sanity my strength. You made me not empty.
