Now that's entertainment

Every few weeks, there is a sort of merry holy war on the campus of UNL. Non-denominational fundamentalist christians come onto the campus and preach, generally spreading the general message that all homosexuals, Buddhists, Moslems and the majority of other Christians are going to hell (this week frats and sororities are added). It has one of the largest draws of students than any other event on campus, not to be saved, but rather entertained. Games have even formed up around this, todays being evangelical Bingo, where key words are placed on a bingo card and when they say it, you cross it off (I got three bingos today). In the past other entertainments have been the forming of a cookie monster cult, alternative readings from Tales of Asgard by a girl dressed as Thor (it was halloween), an alternative reading from an engineering Text book and other wonderful distractions. Some of the bible thumpers even bring their kids along parading them and teaching them the preaching ways, and you just have to feel sorry for the kids. But that appears to be the price of stardom. What a wonderful diversion from the daily stresses of class and homework.
Winery wins gold medals, blue ribbons at competition BY JOE DUGGAN / Lincoln Journal Star Wednesday, Mar 07, 2007 - 12:26:20 am CST PAWNEE CITY — Whether snooty wine aficionados know it or not, a Nebraska hog farmer makes some of the best wine in America. Max Hoffman, an unassuming farmer who raises a few pigs and cattle on his property near Burchard, helped the SchillingBridge Winery and Microbrewery win a “best of show” honor last month at an international wine competition in Florida. “We’re very proud of Max,” said Mike Schilling, who owns the winery with his wife, Sharon. Hoffman, who started growing grapes nearly 30 years ago as a hobby and had never made wine commercially until two years ago, just smiled and shrugged. “I thought it was pretty nice,” he said. “Sharon was pretty excited.” She had good reason to be excited. The winery’s 2006 Edelweiss won double gold in the varietal category and best-of-show in the white category at the 19th annual Florida State International Wine and Juice Competition Feb. 10 in Tampa Bay. Wineries from Germany, Australia, South Africa, New York, Washington and California were among those that entered nearly 1,600 wines in the competition. The honor marks the biggest win for a Nebraska winery because of the event’s prestige and the quality of competition, said Paul Read, professor of horticulture and viticulture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “We tend to think of California, and rightly so, as the 800-pound gorilla of wine production in this country,” he said Tuesday. “To have a parallel achievement by a Nebraska winery is huge, it really is.” The Edelweiss grape grows well in the colder climates of the Upper Midwest and several Nebraska wineries make excellent examples of the style, Read said. But the state also produces other exceptional wine styles. Nebraska has about 20 wineries and several have won high honors at competitions. For example, Cuthills Vineyard near Pierce, James Arthur Vineyards near Raymond and Mac’s Creek Vineyards near Lexington have all won double gold medals in the past, Read said. Double gold signifies a unanimous decision among the panel of judges that an entry deserves a gold medal. Best-of-show is the only higher honor for a wine. SchillingBridge’s win came just two years after it opened in Pawnee City, a community of 1,033 about 90 miles southeast of Lincoln. Because they’re young doesn’t mean they’re inexperienced, Sharon Schilling said. The couple knew Hoffman for years as a customer at the grain elevator they formerly owned. Hoffman knew they liked wine, so he often shared his homemade vintages with them. When the Schillings decided to start their winery, Hoffman was the logical choice for their vintner. Hoffman, who has a degree in animal science, made the jump to commercial winemaking by doing lots of research and reading, they said. “He’s very intelligent,” Mike Schilling said. “Sharon and I are very fortunate to have him.” This year, the winery is offering 17 different wines for sale, three of which won silver and bronze medals in Florida. They grow grapes on the winery property and buy them from contract growers in Southeast Nebraska, Mike Schilling said. Hoffman described their Edelweiss as lightly sweet with tropical fruit flavors on the finish. Sharon Schilling said since they won best-of-show, they’ve received orders from California and New York. Callers seem to consider a Nebraska-made wine almost a novelty. “Not only is it a big deal for us, it’s a big deal for Nebraska,” she said.

life is like a cigarette

i came up witht his theory when i started smoking, it helps to actually be saying it while smoking a cigarette, but here goes. Life is like a cigarette, it starts with the spark of life, the heat of passion (light a lighter or strike a match) then comes the first breath (light the cig) with the first breath, you are already drawing towards the end, with each breath, the length is measured, shorter, almost imperceptibly. Some people, as they work towards the end they cling to the past, holding on to it as they move farther along in life (show dangling ashes) others shed teh past regularely as they go, living for the now and the future (flick the ashes) (inhales) always inching towards the end. Some lives never make it (imply crushing out the cig without actually doing it, who wants to waste a cig) some, get left by the wayside, never coming to much (sets the cig in the ashtray letting it burn for a little bit) they become wasted lives, uneven, but some lives they go all the way to the end (take another drag), what happens then is a matter of belief, some believe in reincarnation (jump a second cigarette) others beleive that life ends, and that is all *crushes out the cigarette then picks up teh butt) but in the end, one thing is for certain (peals the paper from the filter and starts to tear the stained fibers apart) what we leave behind is what matters the most, the friends and families, the lives we have colored, the things we have done, this is how life is like a cigarette.
After many years of bartending i figured out why some bartenders are good and others are great. A great bartender is a combination of two aspects of bartending. To be a bartender, you have to be a gin slinger and you have to be a barkeep. As a barkeep, it is your job to make the people welcome. You remember the regulars, and even those that only come in from time to time, you know their drinks and remember their joys and problems. You make the customer feel welcome, and you know how to bring a laugh to their lips. As a gin slinger, you know your drinks, you mix accurately, and consistently, and yet you can tailor your drinks for the individual. You are quick, getting people what they need when they need it, never leaving a single person behind, even if you have to ask them to wait their turn. To be a great bartender, you have to have an equal mix of both of these aspects. If you are all gin slingers, the people will love their drinks, but never come back. If you are all barkeep, the people will come back to talk, but you will never get the busy nights withthe big tips. It is this combination that makes me believe i am one of the greats.
people, i have been behind the bar slinging gin for a long time, and i must say, some of you disappoint me. Most people don't drink for flavor, they drink what is popular. They take good, expensive and well flavored liquors, and mix them so heavily you don't get the nuance of the flavor. You are spending money for greygoose and Crown and mixing it with coke and redbull when a cheap canadian or vodka will give you the same basic flavor. Watered down light beers are the most popular our there, and they have no flavor, i have tried drinking them, and it is just dirty water. Drink for flavor, don't drink for popularity. This is a humble request from your bartender.

The Long Walk Home

In the dark of cold winters night he walked along, his heart was heavy with the conversation he had just had. He said mean, hurtful things to the woman that he loved, that had meant everything to him. In his defense, he thought, he had said them in retaliation, for she had drawn first blood, but these words rang hollow and empty in his ears, for he knew he had wronged her. He knew that she was in pain, a pain similar to the one he had felt off and on these past several years that he had known her, had loved her. She claimed she loved him too, but only when drunk, only when her defenses were down and it confused him so. Having been drunk, and surrounded by drunks, he always believed that alcohol brought out the truth, but some truths, he supposed, were too hard to deal with in the light of day, to overwhelmed by fears. He began to pass a church. He was more a spiritual man than religeous, but always thought fo this place as holy ground. Without thought he fell to his knees on the front steps, tears flowed from him freely as he wailed to its doors, daring not to enter. He begged any power above for understanding, abd guidance, for answers. He bent forward like a muslim in daily prayer, begging for some wisdom, insight, understanding, he begged for anything. Over time his knees grew cold against the hard marble stairs, his nose clogged and glasses overcome with tears. He rose. There would be no answers today, he realized. No answers ever for all he knew. They hurt each other and he knew not why. He only wanted to give her happiness, in any way he could. Slowly he began to sulk home, feeling the tears that still streaked his face. Perhaps he would sleep, perhaps he would have the answer by the light of day. It was longshot, one not likely to come in, but as he always belived, some hope was better than none at all. No hope only leads to the end.

players

Ladies, the time has come to let the secret out. Every guy is a player. They just all play different games. Most of the guys that are identified as players play basketball, they hurry back and forth, trying to get the ball in the hole as often as possible, keeping track of points like their lives depended on it. Some guys are football players. They work their way slowly down the field, wanting to eventually get the touch of a down comforter and hopefully split the uprights. If they fail, they make sure to keep the other guys from getting farther than they did. Personally, i have always been a chess player. We move in for position, trying to get a feel for those we are against, hoping eventually to get the other person in mate. The problem with chess players is that the women don't realize we are out there, so the basketball players put the ball in the hole and we are left polishing our bishops. Just something to think about from a longtime bartening philosopher
