WINNIPEG -- Chants of "Teemu" started before the national anthems even began in Winnipeg. Eric Decker Jersey . When the scoreboard video camera zoomed in on the Ducks bench, Teemu Selanne stood up and turned around waving to the cheering Jets fans before Winnipegs 5-3 victory over Anaheim on Saturday. "Theres always a big piece of Winnipeg people in my heart," Selanne said. "Thats very important." Selanne was even cheered when he touched the puck while his teammates were booed, a testament to the fans adoration of the 19-year veteran whose career began with the old Winnipeg franchise. "I think its great to see the city appreciate talent like that and to honour somebody that was a big part of the Jets history," said Mike Krentz, one of many fans sporting a No. 13 Jets jersey with Selannes name on the back. Fans then gave him a standing ovation when a video tribute was shown welcoming him back to Winnipeg, while one fan held up a sign that said, "Teemu we forgive you come home." Another sign read "Psst ... HEY ... TEEMU WRONG JERSEY". "He was an all-round good guy," said the 36-year-old Krentz during the first intermission. "Good skill, nice in the community, his smiling face." Selanne assisted on two goals for Anaheim in the loss. He said the game ranked up there as one of his best memories, along with playing this years first regular-season game in his native Helsinki, Finland. "Every time when I was on the ice I really enjoyed it," he said. "Obviously the support, it was awesome." Seeing the signs in the stand during the warmup, as well as people wearing his old No. 13 Jets jersey, brought back fond memories. "I felt everybodys watching me so it was special," he said. He said it feels like hes come full-circle in his career. "This was a dream come true to come back and play here one more time," he said. "Like I said, it was unbelievable." Selannes wife and four children were in the stands. Selanne said it was good that his three hockey-playing sons could see a game where theres a lot of "passion" compared to their home in California. "We were pretty impressed with the way the crowd responded to him, and rightfully so," Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf said. "It says everything that we already know about him. Hes one of the best humans that we know. Its not just about the on-ice stuff, its about the way he is in the community and the way he is with his fans and friends. Hes a pretty likable guy." Added Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau: "That was pretty chilling. Take the game away and it was pretty emotional. I can only imagine what Teemu was feeling during the first 10 minutes of the game." The crowd was so electric during the games opening that the players on the ice had a tough time communicating. "To be honest with you it was hard as heck to be out there," Jets goaltender Chris Mason said. "At the beginning of the game youre trying to communicate with your D men, but it was kind of pointless because I could barely even hear myself. It was pretty cool, though, to see what (Selanne) means to the city and how high he holds Winnipeg in his heart." The 41-year-old right-winger began his NHL career with the Jets in 1992-93, setting rookie records with 76 goals and 132 points during a campaign fans have never forgotten. Selanne said earlier this week he was looking forward to saying a proper goodbye to Winnipeg fans. The Finnish Flash was traded to the Ducks in February 1996 and didnt get to move with the Jets when they relocated to Phoenix at the end of that season and became the Coyotes. Selanne was later traded to San Jose and also played for Colorado before returning to Anaheim in 2005. Selanne leads the Ducks with 33 points (10 goals, 23 assists) in what may be his final season before retiring. Steve Atwater Jersey . Unfortunately for the team - while it does boast one of the best prospect crops in the league - most of its brightest lights are still not quite major-league ready. Knowshon Moreno Jersey . After opening life in Major League Soccer with a five game winless run, they secured their first win in front of their own fans against a Canadian rival. http://www.shopthebroncos.com/von-miller-jersey . How close? Maybe an inch. Mark Reynolds two-run single in the eighth inning backed a strong performance from Wei-Yin Chen and rallied the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. The Orioles had failed several times earlier in the game with runners in scoring position, but Reynolds was able to reach out and bloop a single just in front of centre fielder Denard Span to put the Orioles ahead. Elvis Dumervil Jersey .J. -- Ilya Bryzgalov had plenty of time this season to babble on about bears, the universe, the woods, and other arcane bits of knowledge. Shannon Sharpe Jersey . -- Even though the new boss wasnt in attendance, the Detroit Pistons did their best to make a good first impression. CALGARY -- Jon Cornish wasnt biting Thursday. On Wednesday, Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin guaranteed Cornish wouldnt surpass 100 yards rushing when the Riders host the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday. That didnt bother Cornish, who says hes all about wins, not rushing yards. "You win or you lose and thats the only thing that really matters," he said following Thursdays practice. "If I have five yards and we win, Ill be happy with that. "I could care less what he has to say. I guess it could be almost unprecedented. Coaches have their various ways of trying to get in my head. To each his own." Calgary coach/GM John Hufnagel agrees. "Were going out there to try to win the football game," he said. "I dont care if Jon Cornish gets one yard and we win. "Thats the only thing that our mindset is." A day earlier, though, Chamblin was very much to the point regarding Cornish. "I will put the guarantee in the paper and say that Jon Cornish better not get over 100 yards rushing," Chamblin told reporters in Regina. "If he does, somebody wont be on that field come the next week. Im going to tell you that right now. "Were going to make a conscious effort to stop the run. If hes going to run the ball, hed better be running through six tacklers on his back. There shouldnt be open gaps." Bold words, indeed, considering Cornish ran for 159 yards on 24 carries in Calgarys last game against Saskatchewan, a 17-10 win Aug. 25 at Mosaic Stadium. But the Riders held Cornish to 39 yards rushing on 11 carries in a 41-38 loss at McMahon Stadium on July 19. "I dont really worry about what the other team does, Ive always emphasized that," Cornish said. "Its about what we do. "If we do everything right, I cant speculate about what theyll do. When you make guaranttees and stuff, being an honourable man you have to follow through with it. Willis McGahee Jersey. . Unfortunately, he made one that will negatively affect somebody." Stopping the 27-year-old Cornish wont be easy. The native of New Westminster, B.C., is the CFLs rushing leader with 880 yards and is a focal point of Calgarys offence. "When you play the Calgary Stampeders, one of the areas that you want to make a point with your football team is trying to stop the running game," Hufnagel said. "Weve been a good rushing team since I came on board. "Weve been up there in the league stats. That doesnt surprise me that theyre trying to stop our running game. Maybe I wouldnt have put it so eloquently, but thats all Im going to say." But Saskatchewan counters with a stingy defence thats ranked second against the run (92.2 yards per game) and fewest points allowed (21.3 per game). "He set the bar a little bit lower," Cornish said of Chamblin. "I think theyre going to come out really focused and trying to lay some licks and stuff, sew me up. "When you know about it, it gives you something to focus on. Its not really something I worry about too much, stats on the field. You go out and play. At the end of the day, win or lose, thats the thing you care about." Guarantees aside, the game is an important one for Saskatchewan (5-6), which enters weekend action tied for third in the West Division with Edmonton. Calgary (7-4) is alone in second. And if the Riders concentrate too much in stopping the run, Cornish said that will open up other areas for quarterback Kevin Glenn to exploit. "If you want to dedicate that much of your resources to stopping the run, I definitely believe that we are a multi-headed monster," Cornish said. "Youll have to stop other aspects of our game as well." ' ' '
