At my job, we sometimes access a probation & parole website where they post names and photos of parole abscondees (basically fleeing felons). I was on the site today to see if one of my clients was on there, and instead I saw my ex's (my son's father's) brother on there!
This is a guy who, in the 17+ years that I've known him, has only been OUT of jail for a few months here and there, in total probably less than 2 yrs of freedom in the past 17 yrs. I only recently found out that he was out of jail again a couple weeks ago, when his sister told me he was at her house using her computer and found my MySpace page. So, I know the area where he's hanging out but not exactly where he is supposedly staying, except that he's at his sister's regularly from what I heard.
My duties for my job require me to report the whereabouts of fleeing felons to the parole board. However, in this situation I'm not REQUIRED to do anything because the person in question is not my client. I just happened upon this info and so it became a personal situation, not work-related. I'm still not sure what I should do. I want to do the right thing always.
Should I tip off the parole board to his possible whereabouts? Should I warn the family and suggest he turn himself in? Wouldn't he be in less trouble in the long run if he turns himself in rather than if they catch him later?
As far as I know, his convictions are mostly for theft. If he was a rapist or child molester, I would without a doubt have to turn him in.
Any serious input is appreciated. |
