Jester left me Horrific death, Pals watch teen fall between rail cars JOHN A.K.A JESTER~ An 18-year-old Jersey City graffiti writer was cut in two by the wheels of a train when he jumped from one freight car to another and lost his footing, officials said yesterday. "It's a high price to pay for being engaged in that sort of activity," Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said of the death of John M. Knueppel, 18, of Lake Street, in the Heights. At about 1:45 a.m. Thursday, police found Knueppel's torso lying face up between the rails of the Conrail tracks on the trestle behind the Topps building at the foot of Newark Avenue near Van Winkle Avenue, DeFazio said. Knueppel's legs were found outside the trestle's curved tracks, where a mile-and-a-half-long CSX train ran over him while two of his friends watched in horror, DeFazio said. It is not clear if the three were spray painting on the moving train itself or were just riding on the freight cars, but Knueppel's two friends - his 18-year-old roommate and a 17-year-old - told investigators they had been out that night writing graffiti. "They were jumping from one car to another car and the victim apparently missed the other car," DeFazio said. "Both witnesses saw him fall below the car and get crushed. They went to a friend's house on Van Wagenen Avenue and the friend called the Jersey City police. He was likely killed almost instantaneously." Knueppel's father said he couldn't say a word for 15 minutes after police told him what happened to his son. "He was well known in the neighborhood and a really good kid, but he was wild," said Jeff Knueppel, who lives on Manhattan Avenue. "You couldn't stop him. I pretty much knew when I answered the door at 5 in the morning. They said 'It's about your son.'" The driver of the train is not facing any charges and DeFazio said Knueppel's death has been ruled accidental. Calls yesterday to CSX were not returned. John Knueppel's sister, Katie Knueppel, of 15th Street in Bayonne, said her brother was born in Jersey City, went to School 25 and attended the CREATE Charter School for two years. In August 2004, he completed a one-year program at a military boarding school at Fort Dix, she said. "He was just a wiry little fella, always joking around, never stood still, always out and about," Katie Knueppel said yesterday. She said he wrote poetry and played the guitar and enjoyed skateboarding and bike riding. Knueppel's body was taken to the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark where an autopsy was performed later on the day he died.
