OK, so we had a big varsity duals wrestling meet at my son's school this weekend. There were 15 teams there, some in our district and a few from other areas. Earlier this season, a 17 yr-old wrestler from one of the teams in our district was charged, along with 3 other 17 yr-olds, with an armed robbery that occurred over the summer. They held up a bakery with an Airsoft gun and stole some money. This has been all over the news, and the names of kids WERE released even though they are minors because they are being charged as adults.
Because of the criminal charges, this particular wrestler was unable to participate in sports at his school. Another school in our district, however, picked him up for the season. He wrestles 189# and they already had a decent wrestler at that weight, but they bumped that kid out of his varsity spot to give it up to the armed robber because he is ranked 1st in the district at that weight.
At the duals tourney this weekend, all of the coaches from the other teams got together and made the decision that they would forfeit all of their 189# matches against this team. And they did. They didn't give him a match all weekend. The kid was stomping around cursing and punching the walls and things, which I'd seen him do many times over the years because he can't control his temper or his mouth.
I heard mixed opinions at the tournament about the coaches' decisions. Do you agree that they should have basically boycotted this wrestler because he has criminal charges against him and/or cannot conduct himself in a sportsmanlike manner, OR do you think he has every right to continue wrestling this season, including the possibility of going to States?
Keep in mind, that any student that gets in trouble in or out of school has historically not been permitted to participate in sports for an established period of time. In the past wrestlers have been kicked off the team for using chewing tobacco, being suspended from school, or having disorderly conduct charges, etc. |
