March 1st 2007 Missouri Tornado I could see this tornado yards away as I tried to get my mom up next door.It blew windows out of the house,trees over,damaged the motor home and a few cars of the owners place ( of the park we live in).Is what I was really seeing but didn't know it at the time.I have never been so scared in my life as I was today.I guess it's cause I had my son and was trying to get my Mother up,all I could see was this tornado coming right at us.. I never knew a Little 4 cylinder 5 speed could grab them gears like today.Was a much over whelming day.We had to out run the tornado but are safe besides my mind after all that. WEST PLAINS, Missouri (CNN) -- Storms suspected of packing at least a dozen tornadoes ripped through the heartland early Thursday, killing one person in Missouri, officials said. As the storm made its way across the Plains and toward the Southeast on Thursday, officials were still trying to confirm the tornado touchdowns and assess the damage wrought by the storm. Homes and businesses were left in tatters, vehicles were thrown around and telephone poles uprooted. Severe weather is predicted from Illinois to Florida and people are being warned to watch for tornadoes and thunderstorms. One person was killed in southern Missouri's Howell County and four were injured, said Susie Stonner of the Missouri Emergency Management Agency. In Caulfield, Missouri, Delora Murta said a storm destroyed a gas station, ripping off its roof and back wall. The storm also uprooted two large trees and damaged a restaurant and antiques store, she said. "It's like a war zone down there," said Murta, an assistant manager at a gas station near the one that was destroyed. CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said the storm system could "potentially be the worst tornado outbreak in years." Myers predicts the storm system could generate as many as 50 tornadoes. In Illinois and Missouri, dozens of counties were under tornado watches Thursday morning, and Myers said the Southeast can expect more watches and warnings as the sun "heats things up." Tornadoes struck southern Missouri today killing a 7-year-old girl as a severe storm system packing hail and high winds rolled toward the heart of the Southeastern states. Howell County Sheriff Robbie Crites identified the victim as Elizabeth Croney, whose mother, father and a brother were injured when a tornado hit their mobile home in a rural wooded area 16 miles southwest of West Plains. It took paramedics about an hour to reach the home, and they had to use chain saws to cut through wooded debris blocking the road. storm "It was a single mobile home, but it was in a salvage yard with scrap metal," said Dennis Crider, sports editor for the West Plains Daily Quill, who arrived at the scene about an hour after the twister hit. "It looks like a bomb was dropped in there. Stuff is spun everywhere in the trees." The Missouri State Emergency Management office told CNN that four people were also injured in the storm. Deputies said four mobile homes, two houses and two service stations were damaged by the twisters. A tornado also touched down near an elementary school but the building was not damaged. It's a total loss," said Paul Norris, operations manager for Heartland Rural Electric Cooperative. He said the storm also ripped out poles and electric lines, but power was expected to be restored by the end of the day. The tornadoes were spawned by a collision of moist Gulf air and a frigid air mass whipped by an unusually strong jet stream. The National Weather Service warned of a "potentially very dangerous situation" from more tornadoes and high winds from Missouri to Florida throughout the day. Will add pictures later in album.
