Besides working my professional career, I'm also a singer. I dig virtually all kinds of music and have sung in several small local gigs in my area-- from one song to a whole show before in varying musical genres. I used to be hooked up with a guitarist but he's unable to perform for a while due to personal obligations. I still want to sing very much and really miss being on stage for a real show as the "featured talent".
A couple of rock bands in town have posted that they are looking for a singer. I am thinking of trying to get an audition. By looking at me, 40 year old thick black chick with braids, most are extremely surprised to hear how incredibly diverse my musical tastes are, including the fact that I LOVE rock (hard, soft, clasic, very heavy metal) and have dozens of rock concert ticket stubs to prove it. Thing is, I always really stick out like a sore thumb when I hit the rock scene (you can really pick me out of the crowd) but I still have a kick ass time. Should I:
a) Let them know what I look like before talking about an audition so I don't waste all of our time if they are looking for a more typical video-like "rock goddess"
OR
b) Shut up, show up and WAIL on the mic, hoping to win them over |
