People often say, "Oh, she's an online friend. I don't know her in real life (IRL)." Is a person online not actually real? Or living? If you spoke with someone on the phone every day before meeting face to face, is that not IRL? Does the technology we use to communicate really make a difference?
You might say, "Well, you never can be sure if people online are who they say they are." Isn't that true of any encounter?
So... A friendship/relationship online: Is it "In Real Life" or only pretend?
