Here it is, the coldest day of the year. Most of the Midwest is in the grip of Jack Frost and he is nipping more than our noses.
I woke up this morning to the bustling sounds of my family as they prepared for their day. I found myself laying on Eddie's side of the bed answering questions and playing referee to the 2 most emotional souls in the world. Neither one is the best morning person when they are feeling "rushed".
Once the house emptied out and I found myself left to the caress of the silence left in their wake. I worked on some small household projects while I waited for the sounds of the workmen repairing the boiler.
I realized the folly of this thinking when the maintenance man knocked on the door toting the new toilet for my bathroom. I let him in and made the obligatory small talk before I broached the subject. Then he actually made that nervous first step onto the thin ice.
"Wow, you seem to have it pretty toasty in here Sunny" He looks to me from the corner of his eye to check my reaction.
I took a deep breath as my eyes turned to evil slits belonging to a demon sizing up its latest mark.
"Well, seeing how it is four below zero outside on the coldest day since the 70's ..
(pause for dramatic effect) ..
I have had to resort to heating my apartment with my stove and then I have pots of water boiling on my stove to help reduce the carbon monoxide that is now poisoning my family."
This statement caused him to apologize and to promise to get something done immediately.
I have not seen nor heard from him since.
*sighs*
So I am waiting on a return call from the local housing authority telling me what they are going to do to remedy this situation.
