Famous Winter Treks in India

It’s the time of the year when complete Himalayan ranges are covered in thick snow. The trees and water streams also have visually great effects of low temperature. Its tranquility and serenity is beyond any comparison which will definitely tempt an adventure lover.

Walking on a trail covered in thick snow beds is quite an experience but challenging too. It is not as easy as it looks. It is difficult to balance on ice and specially taking steps in deep snow which takes double energy of a trekker. Such treks are usually done after mid-January up till March as the snow and temperature is just accurate for a winter trek. But if one really wants to try a winter trek then below are some ‘not so difficult’ treks. Just a little practice, fitness and proper guidance are required.

Kedarkantha Trek:
One of the most famous winter treks in Uttarakhand, Kedarkantha (3810 m) stands out for its impeccable view of Gangotri and Yamunotri range which includes famous peaks like Swargarohini, Black Peak and Bandarpunch Summit. This trek starts from Sankari Village in north Uttarakhand which is also a famous trail head to many treks in this region. This trek will be fun as the trail passes through different forests and crosses many small water streams.

Kuari Pass Trek:
Kuari Pass trek is considered as a quite easy trek for the first timers. It is a wonderful visual treat to a nature lover where the whole journey has beautiful scenery to adore. The best view of this trek is the majestic view of Nanda Devi peak from Kuari Pass (3876 m). This trek starts from Joshimath to Dhak and passes through small villages to reach the pass. But while returning back this tour diverts to the famous skiing region of India, Auli and reaches to Joshimath. It is an interesting and fun trek to try at least once.

Dodital & Dwara Top:
The most loved, double destination trek, Dodital & Dwara Top is an amazing experience of winter trek for new trekkers. Dodital (3310 m) is an amazing lake area that is surrounded by beautiful Himalayas and holds a perfect place for overnight camping. Likewise, the trek to Dwara Top is an amazing experience with spellbinding view of various Himalayan ranges from an elevation of 4150 m. It is definitely going to be a lifetime experience.

Dayara Bugyal Trek:
The beautiful trek with panoramic view from an elevation of 3408 m, Dayara Bugyal is an amazing winter trek. It starts from Barsu village in north Uttarakhand, passing through beautiful meadows and deep forests and leads to an iconic view of Gangotri peaks, Bandarpunch, Black Peak along with other famous ones.

Chadar Trek:

The mesmerizing and most unique winter trek is Chadar winter trek in Zanskar region of Ladakh. It is a trek that goes over thick ice sheet of frozen Zanskar River. It happens when the entire region witness the lowest temperature of the year. While walking on the frozen river, this trek will also have a beautiful frozen waterfall which will definitely awestruck you. It will also introduce the remote Ladakh culture in Nerak Village where the frozen river trek is their necessity to stay connected with rest of the region.

If you are looking forward to attempt a winter trek in 2021 then look up for fixed departure treks from Shikhar Trek where you can register for a fully guided trek.
