MANCHILD...
Out of the urban streets of Southern California comes a musical force to be reckoned with. His name is Manchild. He was born Daryl Jones Jr. in the city of Los Angeles on December 3, 1980. Manchild was exposed to music at an early age due the fact his father was a musician. His father, Daryl Jones Sr., is a bassist who played with such groups as Lakeside, Shalimar, and others. This was a major influence in Manchilds life. “Watching my pops jam, even as a little boy, I knew I wanted to have something to do with music” says the M.C. Aside from his pops, Manchild attributes the M.C. that we hear today to a long list of influences. Ranging from legends such as Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, to Hip-Hop icons Big Daddy Kane, and Erik B and Rakim. Manchild has been performing on stage since the age of 8, and considers himself to be not only a recording artist, but a performer. “I have a genuine love for the stage” says the M.C. “Its the only time I truly feel free, of course I love to record too, but there’s just something about a stage, mic, and audience. Its better than any drug”.
Manchild has the track record to back up his uncontrollable addiction to stages and mics. He was the first artist to be signed to a recording contract on 45 pro records, an independent record label started by members of the California based music group, L.A. Symphony. Since the company dissolved in 2000, Manchild has been performing and recording as a freelance artist. In addition to booking club dates at some of Hollywood’s premier hot spots, he also managed to land his own featured artist spot and cable public access show with Time Warner.
Manchild is one of those artists who has a keen sense of responsibility when it comes to his lyrical content. “What I like to think separates me from other rap artist, is the fact that I don’t want to box myself in” explains Manchild. I want a 50 year old grandmother to be able to buy my records the same as a younger adult would, and still be comfortable doing it. The key is to be artistically responsible without being boring”. When asked to describe his work in one word he says this: “If I had to describe my work in one word, that word would be, significant. I plan to be someone who writes significant music, brings significant change, and above all, one who makes significant sales”.
