THE banging headache, dry mouth and a bad stomach is no way to start 2008. Get rid of the terrible feeling with our handy hangover cure guide. So how do you deal with the effects of the morning after when most chemists are closed? Angela Epstein rounds up some of the easiest self-help methods to cure your aching body. You don't have to try them all at once - just see what works best for you. WHEN YOU GET HOME DRINK A GLASS OF MILK After a drinking session, have a glass of milk before going to bed, says Dr Andy Dowson, director of headache services at King's College London. Milk is an anti- diuretic, which means it stops the kidneys producing urine. "So by drinking milk you can rehydrate the body but won't get woken up by constantly needing the loo. Interrupted sleep contributes to the headaches associated with hangovers." ON WAKING UP BICARBONATE OF SODA Dissolve a teaspoon of it in a glass of water and drink on waking, says Dr Shamim Daya, of the Wholistic Medical Centre in London. "When we drink too much, our whole system becomes acidic. This produces headaches, joint aches and dehydration. Bicarbonate of soda is an alkaline, which will neutralise the acidity and so fight the symptoms of hangover." FOR BREAKFAST COOKED BREAKFAST Having a cooked breakfast may sound obvious, but why does it work? According to consultant physician Dr Sarah Burnett, of the Princess Grace Hospital in London, alcohol lowers the body's production of anti-inflammatory hormones. This results in inflammation in the brain, as well as shutting down the production of protective mucous in the stomach lining. Fat reduces this by coating the stomach. TOAST AND HONEY If you can't stomach a cooked breakfast, toast with honey is the ideal New Year's Day hangover cure, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry. Experts there claim honey provides the body with sodium and potassium lost through dehydration. PORRIDGE Alternatively, have a bowl of porridge topped with brown sugar. "Oats neutralise acidity levels in the body caused by excess alcohol and help absorb toxins, so you will soon start to feel better," says Dr Burnett. Porridge also contains soluble fibre which helps prevent nausea and the sugar will give you an instant energy lift if your blood sugar levels are low. ORANGE JUICE Vitamin C speeds up the metabolism of alcohol by the liver, according to London-based GP Dr Rob Hicks. The quicker alcohol is flushed from the body, the faster your symptoms will disappear. Have one glass of orange juice on waking up. COFFEE The caffeine in coffee can help ease headaches, according to Dr Dowson. One possible reason is that caffeine has an effect on the neurotransmitters which relay signals in the brain and which are linked to headaches. Caffeine also helps absorption of aspirin into the brain, so taking coffee with the headache tablets will make you feel better faster. However, don't drink any more than two cups, warns Dr Dowson, as too much caffeine can cause more severe headaches. DURING THE DAY ACUPRESSURE Activating an acupressure point on your wrist associated with the stomach can momentarily control nausea, says Kim Mendez, a Chinese medical practitioner at Pineapple Studios in London. "Place your index finger, middle finger and ring finger in a line so that the index rests on the crease in the middle of your wrist and the ring finger is at the base of your palm. Then press with the ring finger for 20 to 30 seconds." RUB YOUR ARMPITS WITH LEMON Puerto Ricans apparently swear by this holistic cure. The lemon juice supposedly stops you sweating and so helps you retain fluid and prevent the dehydration that contributes to hangover headaches. MAKE A CINNAMON BREW The spice contains chemicals called catechins which help combat flatulence and loss of appetite, and can stop nausea and vomiting, says Dr Lakshman Karalliedde, a lecturer at King's College London School of Medicine. To make a brew, add two teaspoons of the powder to boiling water. Let it cool and sip slowly. DRINK PEPPERMINT TEA This is a traditional remedy used to combat nausea and vomiting, according to Vicky Pennington, a nutritionist for Boots. By stimulating bile production in the gall bladder, peppermint breaks down fat in the digestion system, and relieves sickness. HAVE A SPORTS DRINK Research has shown that isotonic sports drinks are among the best ways to speed up recovery from hangovers, says Martin Crisp, superintendent pharmacist for Superdrug. The small amounts of body salts they contain enhance fluid absorption in the gut faster than water and so help with dehydration. COLD COMPRESS Alcohol increases blood flow to the brain and causes the throbbing head associated with a hangover, says Sheffield-based GP and sports physician Dr Rav Naik. "So applying a cold compress will reduce this flow and help ease the symptoms." SNACK ON A BANANA Bananas contain a lot of potassium, a mineral lost when we drink alcohol and a lack of which contributes to the dehydration symptoms of hangover, says Tom MacDonald, professor of immunology at Bart's and The London School of Medicine. Bananas are also a source of carbohydrates and eating one will raise blood sugar levels and so stave off nausea. TAKE A BRISK WALK Exercise will help get rid of your hangover by increasing circulation, improving blood supply to organs such as the liver and kidneys, and so speed up the loss of toxins from the body, says Dr Naik. LIE ON YOUR RIGHT SIDE This will help flush the stomach of gastric acid linked to nausea in hangovers, says Dr Burnett. "The stomach is a bag sitting diagonally in the body from left to right. By lying on the right-hand side you can help move things along and so relieve nausea." TRIED AND TESTED WATER Drink a glass of water as soon as you wake up, says Dr Mike Dixon, visiting professor of integrated health and care at the University of Westminster in London, and then have a glass at least every hour. "As alcohol is a diuretic, it stimulates the kidneys to produce more urine. This makes you dehydrated, causing your brain to shrink and leading to throbbing temples." HAIR OF THE DOG Having a small shot of alcohol the morning after your big night will give temporary relief because it blocks the liver from breaking down methanol - the element in alcohol that causes hangovers. However, GP Dr Dawn Harper, of Channel 4's Embarrassing Illnesses, warns against this. "Not only will the relief be temporary but drinking more will make you vulnerable to health problems such as liver damage," she says. GO BACK TO BED This sounds obvious, but it really does help. Alcohol disrupts the different phases of sleep, which is why we feel so tired when we wake with a hangover, even if we feel we've slept heavily. "You need to get up and deal with dehydration and low blood sugar by having something to eat and drink," says Dr Naik. "Then take a walk. After this, go back to bed for a couple of hours. This will enable the body to rest properly, so you can regain your strength."

The History of the Sock

The History of the Sock "How on earth could the history of a sock influence culture?" one might ask. Associated with the Christian religion, Christmas has adopted just such a tradition in a big way. For years and years we look forward to nothing other than the important traditional hanging of our sock over the fireplace on Christmas Eve in hopes that Santa Claus will leave us some great gifts but seldom do we ask ourselves why a sock or who started such a crazy idea. There are several theories: the Dutch, the North American, or the poor, kind nobleman are just three of many possibilities. The Dutch theory suggests that during the sixteenth century it was a widely practiced ritual of Holland children to leave snacks out for Sinterclass along with their clogs full of straw, which Sinterclass used to feed his donkey. For this favor, Sinterclass would leave the children treats in their clogs. It is said that when Americans adopted this tradition, Sinterclass became Santa Claus, the donkey became a reindeer, and the clogs became socks. The rather bland idea that the North American culture adopted the practice of hanging socks over the fireplace as an effect of popular literature is much less exciting. Stated to have simply arisen from illustrations of Thomas Nast drawn for a famous Christmas story written by George Webster in the 19th century leaves the imagination somewhat less than teased. The last but quite possibly the most exciting idea revolving around the historical impact of socks on Christmas is the tale of the poor kind nobleman. It is said that this man of three daughters, whose wife died early, had no money for a dowry needed so his daughters could marry. Distraught without any idea of what to do, his daughters finished their laundry and hung their socks over the fireplace to dry. Saint Nicholas, saddened by such despair, waited for all to retire to bed and then scurried up to the rooftop. Dropping three bags of golden nuggets down the chimney with one landing in a sock of each daughter they awoke to find each had enough to marry. No matter which tradition you believe, the sock has definitely had a profound impact on the celebrations of Christmas, much to the delight of children everywhere.

Here are two very touching photos honored at this years International Picture of the Year. First Place: Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News When 2nd Lt. James Cathey's body arrived at the Reno Airport, Marines climbed into the cargo hold of the plane and draped the flag over his casket as passengers watched the family gather on the tarmac. During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport, Major Steve Beck described the scene as so powerful: "See the people in the windows? They sat right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home," he said. "They will remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should." Second Place: Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. "I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it," she said. "I think that's what he would have wanted." image0012.jpgimage0023.jpg

"Red Fridays"

Very soon, you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority." We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or overbearing. Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday -- and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that .... every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar, will wear something red. By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, coworkers, friends, and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on. The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is ..."We need your support and your prayers." Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday. IF YOU AGREE -- THEN SEND THIS ON. IT IS YOUR CHOICE. WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE Amen.

" Wear Red"

I received this in email from a friend: " Worthy for a BLOG here @ Fubar" Please read and comment.Den. Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together. After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home. No, he responded. Heading out I asked? No. I'm escorting a soldier home. Going to pick him up? No. He is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq. I'm taking him home to his family. The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch to the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, although he didn't know the soldier, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he knew them after many conversations in so few days. I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said, Thank you. Thank you for doing what you do so my family and I can do what we do. Upon landing in Chicago the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom. "Ladies and gentlemen"-"I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrade back home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the forward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and receive his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign." Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to be an American. So here's a public Thank You to our military Men and Women for what you do so we can live the way we do. signed: Stuart Margel -- Washington, D.C. *********************

"Jimi Hendrix " Biography

In his brief four-year reign as a superstar,Jimi Hendrix expanded the vocabulary of the electric rock guitar more than anyone before or since. Hendrix was a master at coaxing all manner of unforeseen sonics from his instrument, often with innovative amplification experiments that produced astral-quality feedback and roaring distortion. His frequent hurricane blasts of noise and dazzling showmanship -- he could and would play behind his back and with his teeth and set his guitar on fire -- has sometimes obscured his considerable gifts as a songwriter, singer, and master of a gamut of blues, R&B, and rock styles. mp009.jpg When Hendrix became an international superstar in 1967, it seemed as if he'd dropped out of a Martian spaceship, but in fact he'd served his apprenticeship the long, mundane way in numerous R&B acts on the chitlin circuit. During the early and mid-'60s, he worked with such R&B/soul greats as Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, and King Curtis as a backup guitarist. Occasionally he recorded as a session man (the Isley Brothers' 1964 single "Testify" is the only one of these early tracks that offers even a glimpse of his future genius). But the stars didn't appreciate his show-stealing showmanship, and Hendrix was straight-jacketed by sideman roles that didn't allow him to develop as a soloist. The logical step was for Hendrix to go out on his own, which he did in New York in the mid-'60s, playing with various musicians in local clubs, and joining white blues-rock singer John Hammond Jr.'s band for a while. It was in a New York club that Hendrix was spotted by Animals bassist Chas Chandler. The first lineup of the Animals was about to split, and Chandler, looking to move into management, convinced Hendrix to move to London and record as a solo act in England. There a group was built around Jimi, also featuring Mitch Mitchell on drums and Noel Redding on bass, that was dubbed the Jimi Hendrix Experience. The trio became stars with astonishing speed in the U.K., where "Hey Joe," "Purple Haze," and "The Wind Cries Mary" all made the Top Ten in the first half of 1967. These tracks were also featured on their debut album, Are You Experienced?, a psychedelic meisterwerk that became a huge hit in the U.S. after Hendrix created a sensation at the Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967. Are You Experienced? was an astonishing debut, particularly from a young R&B veteran who had rarely sung, and apparently never written his own material, before the Experience formed. What caught most people's attention at first was his virtuosic guitar playing, which employed an arsenal of devices, including wah-wah pedals, buzzing feedback solos, crunching distorted riffs, and lightning, liquid runs up and down the scales. But Hendrix was also a first-rate songwriter, melding cosmic imagery with some surprisingly pop-savvy hooks and tender sentiments. He was also an excellent blues interpreter and passionate, engaging singer (although his gruff, throaty vocal pipes were not nearly as great assets as his instrumental skills). Are You Experienced? was psychedelia at its most eclectic, synthesizing mod pop, soul, R&B, Dylan, and the electric guitar innovations of British pioneers like Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, and Eric Clapton. Amazingly, Hendrix would only record three fully conceived studio albums in his lifetime. Axis: Bold as Love and the double-LP Electric Ladyland were more diffuse and experimental than Are You Experienced? On Electric Ladyland in particular, Hendrix pioneered the use of the studio itself as a recording instrument, manipulating electronics and devising overdub techniques (with the help of engineer Eddie Kramer in particular) to plot uncharted sonic territory. Not that these albums were perfect, as impressive as they were; the instrumental breaks could meander, and Hendrix's songwriting was occasionally half-baked, never matching the consistency of Are You Experienced? (although he exercised greater creative control over the later albums). The final two years of Hendrix's life were turbulent ones musically, financially, and personally. He was embroiled in enough complicated management and record company disputes (some dating from ill-advised contracts he'd signed before the Experience formed) to keep the lawyers busy for years. He disbanded the Experience in 1969, forming the Band of Gypsies with drummer Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox to pursue funkier directions. He closed Woodstock with a sprawling, shaky set, redeemed by his famous machine-gun interpretation of "The Star Spangled Banner." The rhythm section of Mitchell and Redding were underrated keys to Jimi's best work, and the Band of Gypsies ultimately couldn't measure up to the same standard, although Hendrix did record an erratic live album with them. In early 1970, the Experience re-formed again -- and disbanded again shortly afterward. At the same time, Hendrix felt torn in many directions by various fellow musicians, record-company expectations, and management pressures, all of whom had their own ideas of what Hendrix should be doing. Coming up on two years after Electric Ladyland, a new studio album had yet to appear, although Hendrix was recording constantly during the period. While outside parties did contribute to bogging down Hendrix's studio work, it also seems likely that Jimi himself was partly responsible for the stalemate, unable to form a permanent lineup of musicians, unable to decide what musical direction to pursue, unable to bring himself to complete another album despite jamming endlessly. A few months into 1970, Mitchell -- Hendrix's most valuable musical collaborator -- came back into the fold, replacing Miles in the drum chair, although Cox stayed in place. It was this trio that toured the world during Hendrix's final months. It's extremely difficult to separate the facts of Hendrix's life from rumors and speculation. Everyone who knew him well, or claimed to know him well, has different versions of his state of mind in 1970. Critics have variously mused that he was going to go into jazz, that he was going to get deeper into the blues, that he was going to continue doing what he was doing, or that he was too confused to know what he was doing at all. The same confusion holds true for his death: contradictory versions of his final days have been given by his closest acquaintances of the time. He'd been working intermittently on a new album, tentatively titled First Ray of the New Rising Sun, when he died in London on September 18, 1970, from drug-related complications. mp001.jpg Hendrix recorded a massive amount of unreleased studio material during his lifetime. Much of this (as well as entire live concerts) was issued posthumously; several of the live concerts were excellent, but the studio tapes have been the focus of enormous controversy for over 20 years. These initially came out in haphazard drabs and drubs (the first, The Cry of Love, was easily the most outstanding of the lot). In the mid-'70s, producer Alan Douglas took control of these projects, posthumously overdubbing many of Hendrix's tapes with additional parts by studio musicians. In the eyes of many Hendrix fans, this was sacrilege, destroying the integrity of the work of a musician known to exercise meticulous care over the final production of his studio recordings. Even as late as 1995, Douglas was having ex-Knack drummer Bruce Gary record new parts for the typically misbegotten compilation Voodoo Soup. After a lengthy legal dispute, the rights to Hendrix's estate, including all of his recordings, returned to Al Hendrix, the guitarist's father, in July of 1995. With the help of Jimi's step-sister Janie, Al set up Experience Hendrix to begin to get Jimi's legacy in order. They began by hiring John McDermott and Jimi's original engineer, Eddie Kramer to oversee the remastering process. They were able to find all the original master tapes, which had never been used for previous CD releases, and in April of 1997, Hendrix's first three albums were reissued with drastically improved sound. Accompanying those reissues was a posthumous compilation album (based on Jimi's handwritten track listings) called First Rays of the New Rising Sun, made up of tracks from the Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge and War Heroes. Later in 1997, another compilation called South Saturn Delta showed up, collecting more tracks from posthumous LPs like Crash Landing, War Heroes, and Rainbow Bridge (without the terrible '70s overdubs), along with a handful of never-before-heard material that Chas Chandler had withheld from Alan Douglas for all those years. More archival material followed; Radio One was basically expanded to the two-disc BBC Sessions (released in 1998), and 1999 saw the release of the full show from Woodstock as well as additional concert recordings from the Band of Gypsies shows entitled Live at the Fillmore East. 2000 saw the release of the Jimi Hendrix Experience four-disc box set, which compiled remaining tracks from In the West, Crash Landing and Rainbow Bridge along with more rarities and alternates from the Chandler cache. The family also launched Dagger Records, essentially an authorized bootleg label to supply hardcore Hendrix fans with material that would be of limited commercial appeal. Dagger Records has released several live concerts (of shows in Oakland, Ottawa and Clark University in Massachusetts) and a collection of studio jams and demos called Morning Symphony Ideas. ~ Richie Unterberger & Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide Written by Richie Unterberger mp007.jpg

"Going Bananas"

A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about bananas. He said the expression "going bananas" is from the effects of bananas on the brain. Read on:After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again.Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. image001111.jpg A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes. But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit.It can also help overcome or prevent a sub-stantia l number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet. Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood. Anaemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of haemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anaemia. Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke. Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert. Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives. Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system. Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in th e body , so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief. Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness. Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation. Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system. Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady. image004444.jpg Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach. Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal. Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack. Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%! Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of ban ana sk in and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape! So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say,"A banana a day keeps the doctor away!" PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. "Amazing fruit" !!! Never, put your banana in the refrigerator!!!
