Dogs In This Fight

The Michael Vick dog fighting case is bound to cause many divisions of people following the case. There are the football fans who wonder how this will impact the Atlanta Falcons or their fantasy team. There are the animal rights crowd who rightfully call dog fighting an awful practice and the book should be thrown at Vick. There will be the bigots who come out of the woodwork. There are the black activists who will be apologists. There will be the parents who will be upset that their kids might have looked up to Michael Vick. Athletes are held to high physical standards and sometimes low moral ones. They really have to cock-up before anyone pays much heed. This effect continues the better and more accomplished they get. Youthful mistakes and exuberance that bleeds into harsher acts is overlooked for the sake of a team. They are never told no, talent trumps many things including discipline and decency sometimes. But what happens when an athlete is allegedly running a dog fighting ring (or any other such vile endeavor). If Vick plays his cards right he can appeal and stay out of jail until his best playing days are over. Or if the NFL suspends him, Vick pleas out the case and spends roughly that amount of time in jail. The fact is, unless he spends significant time in jail or faces a multi-season ban from the NFL commissioner, teams in the NFL will pick him up after he is invariably cut or dealt by the Falcons. That is the nature of the professional sports beast, talent often trumps character. Some teams think they can fix players. Some teams are always looking for an edge. Not all teams certainly, but all it takes is one. Vick will lose sponsorship deals and that is a lucrative side for any superstar athlete and maybe is a subtle punishment for ill-deeds. Of course that is a multi-hundred multimillionaire becoming a multi-dozen millionaire. He might have to save up for the solid gold rocket car. If Vick is guilty he should be made an example of both legally and economically. Playing football and being a celebrity is a privilege and not a right.

Patriotic Terrorists

Despite a somewhat dodgy delivery, this sums up (in a funny way) my problems with modern Democratic politicians and love the show Red Eye. As a note this is a variant of a blog Greg did on Huffingtonpost.com, you have never seen so many knee-jerk liberals get their panties into such a bunch. But then again I too would be upset if my indefensible position was assaulted. I have stated similar sentiments in my blogs in the past couple of years. When a political party bases its success on our country's failures and in turn actively tries to enable said failures, you have a deeply troubled party. I am not in love with the current Republicans, but modern Democrats seem content to make anyone politically right of socialist hate them.

Paris Hilton is either the dumbest, most emotionally frail and coddled human being on the face of the Earth…. Or the most brilliant media whore ever. That is it.
The Fox network is pouring dumb fuel of the fire of stupidity. “OJ Simpson: If I did It, Here’s How It Happened” shows how stupid and desperate network television has become. Can an entire network jump the shark? What is Fox thinking when it decided to air a show with OJ Simpson talking about how me might have killed Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman? There is no “if.” OJ Simpson killed Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman and he got away with it, criminally speaking. Sure he was convicted in a civil trial but that only left him living the high life in Florida off his pensions. Sure he had to buy a new pair of expensive leather gloves…but come on, the guy is innocent and suffering (and golfing). A more interesting show might have been the LA District attorneys talking about how OJ might be in jail had they been competent prosecutors. A more interesting show might be interviewing the jurors who could discuss what they might have done had they half a brain. Even better might be an interview with Fox programming executives on what they would show on their network had they an ounce of morality. I don’t necessarily blame OJ for this…much. He is a sociopath who seems to get what he wants. Sure that might be the Heisman Trophy, the murder of his wife or a book and TV deal. The blame rest of Fox and REGAN publishing. They have not only hit the bottom of the barrel, they are licking it clean. No strike that. Correct that. I do blame OJ. He still has two kids from their mother, whom he killed… and is going on TV and writing a book about what he would do “if” he killed her. As I said; there really is no “if.” And if there was… I am sure the killer is on all of the best golf courses in Florida… Or on Fox. To quote Norm MacDonald, "Yep, you won that Heisman and that's something they can NEVER take away from you..." *scratches chin* "Unless of course... you MURDER YOUR WIFE!"

Ban Harry Potter!

Was scanning the AP newswire this morning and this popped up; ATLANTA - A suburban county that sparked a public outcry when its libraries temporarily eliminated funding for Spanish-language fiction is now being asked to ban Harry Potter books from its schools. Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction series is an "evil" attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion. Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban "Macbeth" and "Cinderella." "There's a mountain of evidence for keeping Harry Potter," she said, adding that the books don't support any particular religion but present instead universal themes of friendship and overcoming adversity. In June, the county's library board eliminated the $3,000 that had been set aside to buy Spanish-language fiction in the coming fiscal year. One board member said the move came after some residents objected to using taxpayer dollars to entertain readers who might be illegal immigrants. Days later, the board reversed its decision amid accusations that the move was anti-Hispanic. Obviously this Laura Mallory has a lot of time on her hands if banning Harry Potter is her cause de celeb. Like the foolish woman in the 1980’s who called for the ban of Dungeons and Dragons, there is much intellectual dishonesty in this approach. The first problem being that this Ms Mallory has likely never read any of the Harry Potter books. This is an assumption of course, but any reasonable person who has read the novels would never come up with this conclusion. Rowling really does not mention much about religion be it Wicca, Christianity or polytheism. The funny thing is this Ms Mallory plays the Wicca card on this issue. The problem is Wicca is a hokey, faux religion. It was made up in 1954 by a British civil servant. Its roots are murky and completely unverifiable. Wicca is to paganism what Mormonism is to Christianity. A philosophical house of cards and not any profound religious movement. While to me all religion is hokey, both of these are fien example of make believe people pass off as truth. However misplaced Ms Mallory’s argument is based even the most sursory research woudl yield that Wicca is a religion of “good.” Evil magic in anti-thetical to them. This is simply bible thumping at it grandest and should the Gwinnett County Board of Education actually ban Harry Potter it is a grand victory for the ignorant and religiously addled. They might as well light crosses on their lawn and turn the clock back 150 years. Sources http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicca AP
