The person that came up with this line was one naive mother fucker.
I've loved and let go. He came back but not because he loves me or because he's mine. He comes back because he's a greedy bastard and wants to take advantage of me again. If I love him and let him go and he actually leaves (even if it is to come back later) then it was never love. If you love someone they won't leave regardless nor will they have the kind of doubts that keep you from them.
"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me"
