Spokane Valley Mayor declares State of Emergency

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Valley Mayor Richard Munson declared a state of emergency at 5 p.m. on Monday evening as it became clear additional help is needed to clear city streets of the massive amount of snow that has fallen over the past six days.
Expressing concern over the snowfall expected in the coming days, Munson said, "The County-contracted and privately contracted snow removal crews have done a marvelous job in trying to keep up with the record snowfall we are experiencing, but we feel they need help. We hope this declaration will provide some assistance."
Citing the significant economic loss resulting from the record snowfall in the region, the emergency declaration is a first step toward requesting that Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire issue a "Proclamation of Emergency" which would allow the City to access state and federal resources to assist in the snow removal effort.
The declaration also authorizes City departments to contract for necessary services to deal with the snow emergency.
