Canada's youngest mass murderer involved in the slaughter of her family is beginning her gradual reintegration back into society. The teenage girl appeared in Medicine Hat court on Tuesday, marking her last appearance in the custodial phase of a 10-year sentence for the gruesome triple murder that shocked the nation. She was just 12 when she conspired with then-23-year-old Jeremy Steinke, a man who claimed to be a 300-year-old werewolf, to kill her mother, father and eight-year-old brother. Both were convicted in separate trials of three counts of first-degree murder. She was given the maximum six years custody -- minus credit for pretrial custody -- and a four-year supervision order in connection with the April 23, 2006, air yeezy 2011 murders in her family's Medicine Hat home. Steinke is serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years. During her trial, jurors ruled she convinced Steinke to commit the massacre so they could run off together. Steinke broke into her family's Medicine Hat home and repeatedly stabbed her mother, who had gone downstairs to investigate. The girl's father, hearing the commotion, followed his wife downstairs and suffered the same fate. Her eight-year-old brother had his throat slit in his upstairs bed. The girl, now 17, kept her head low and stood with her arms behind her back during most of the proceedings in the courtroom, where Judge Scott Brooker imposed strict conditions to monitor the teen upon her re-emergence after more than four years in closed and open custody. Among the nearly dozen conditions, Brooker ordered further review of her condition in six months' time, that she remain in Alberta, abide by a curfew and allow for warrantless searches of any electronic devices to which she may have access in order for authorities to monitor her use of social networking sites. Her and Steinke had concocted their plans to murder her parents through text exchanges. She adopted the online name Runaway Devil and he, the Souleater, a moniker through which Steinke talked about the plan with others online. In court, Brooker asked the young girl if she had anything to say, to which she replied she was "thankful" for treatment she has received. "It is really helping me to grow," she said quietly. Brooker warned she is now entering a new phase in her sentence and said the reports compiled by her supervisors gave him confidence she would be able to meet any challenges. "When I sentenced you almost four years ago, the last thing I said to you was this, I said 'you can never undo what you've done to your mom and dad and little bother, however, what you can do is honour their memory by dedicating your life to becoming the woman your parents and brother would be proud of,'" Brooker said. Judging by the comments made by mental health workers and custodial overseers, "it appears from all of that that you are using your best efforts to do so, and I wish you continued success in your efforts for rehabilitation," he said. Outside court, defence lawyer Katherin Beyak said her young client is feeling reservations about reintegrating back into the community. "She's been in custody for so long (and she) is looking forward to it, but is really happy to be getting on with the rehabilitation side of it and trying to put her life back together," Beyak said. As for the young woman's next moves, Beyak couldn't comment. "It is a condition that the treatment team will decide where she lives and if she wants to move -- that has to be approved," he said.
