The Myth and the Majesty of Trucking in America

The minds of people in America have been so washed with dirty media water that no one is talking about the truth regarding trucking in America. Name one thing that we have in our daily lives that was not brought to us by a tractor trailer truck? If you can think of one write me and let me know.

The majesty of trucking in America has been clouded by old myths and popular old media that has been taken to be true. Remember Smokey and the Bandit starring Burt Reynolds? No? Look it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_and_the_Bandit the story puts “Smokey” better known as the highway patrol, against the truckers who are given an offer to make an illegal delivery. The “Bandit” Burt Reynolds accepts the offer and recruits help from other truckers to accomplish his task. This movie has put into the minds of most of America what truckers are like and what trucking is all about. Not this movie alone that has done this, but others that came later and the general lack of understanding and knowledge as well as interest from the American public in the truth about the trucking industry.

Today, the trucking industry has the most opportunity for people seeking employment, the most growth of any American industry; the most widely used industry by all other industries, and is the most un-appreciated industry in America.

Do you know a trucker? Have you thanked them for doing their job safely? Would you if you could? You see them on just about ever road that you travel, sometimes you have to pass them, and sometimes they have to pass you. They are going to all of the places that we shop, if they did not, we would not have anything to buy.

When you see a truck on the road you’re on next time, give them a wave. Let them know that you appreciate them doing their job safely and timely. Don’t tailgate behind them, and don’t pass them too closely. They are forty ton vehicles traveling at the speed of traffic. They cannot stop as fast as you do, and they need much more room to move. Give them space and respect, and they will more safely perform their jobs. Don’t buy the myths and the lies; we need our trucks to keep on trucking, so that America can keep on growing.

Considerate is the new Caring

Once upon a time, caring meant sharing what you had with those who were not as well off as you. Some people still regard caring this way; but with these times being so difficult for everyone, caring has not been seen very often by most of us.

Caring has taken a turn towards less broad application; and if widely accepted, caring will be seen as a mark of a real selfishly loving person. To be caring in regards to all aspects of personal interaction with others, being considerate best fits this level of care.

Nowhere in our culture is the lack of caring more noticeable than on our streets and highways. The rising of incidents attributed to roadrage have become a national problem.

Selfishness has crept into the front of our minds. Our children’s disrespect for rules and authority have become our own. What we want and what we think has become our deep obsession.

Take for example the simple act of using a turn single to let other drivers know what you are about to do. Young people have adopted the position that rudeness makes then more noticed. So they act it out wherever they can. Does it work for them? Yes! Does it help them? No! They also teach this behavior as they perform it. Does it help the people who follow it? No! Is it growing? Yes!

Without taking into consideration others in your driving practices, you put yourself and everyone else into jeopardy. If a driver does not alert traffic behind them that they are about to turn, then their slowing down suddenly will not be expected. This single action could cause damage or even death.

We say we care about ourselves, we say we care about others, if our daily habits and actions do not reflect this in truth, then we are simply lying to ourselves and to everyone else. Will we admit this? No! We are too selfish to do that; we will blame and justify our position right into the grave. It would not be that bad if we did it alone, but unfortunately the other victims of our behaviors are too often people we don’t even know.

In order for considerate to become the new caring, we have to become truly honest with ourselves. We cannot become truly honest with ourselves and allow our close relationships to continue to lie to us and to themselves. Considerate must begin within and spread all about. Caring can be selective, and has resulted in limited use. Being considerate of yourself will put caring back into a personal perspective. Then applying it to others in all you do will make it a priority in all of your interactions where others are involved.

Driving involves interacting with others; there is no way around this. Being considerate as a driver helps to keep you out of danger and helps to make you a safer driver. Doing things that demonstrate your consideration of others gets you attention; this attention is often very well received. Be considerate and show you care. Be safe in all your driving.

A life changing career decision

Two years ago I decided to pursue a new career; with all of my professional driving experience the most logical progression for me was to become a tractor-trailer driver.

Big rigs have always fascinated me, the power and ability to move 40 American tons down the highway.

I made up my mind and chose Stevens Transport to train me. What a life changing decision that was. Stevens Transport is a family oriented company. They are focused on safety and fuel efficiency. I learned some of the most important information of my life from my teachers and trainers in school. After completing school and acquiring my CDL class A license, I found out what people who don’t drive big rigs hardly know or understand. So I started this blog to share my experiences and understandings with others. I hope that more people will consider being more cautious in their driving.
