Where a school system is concerned...
Is it better to expect too much of a child??
or
Not expect a child to do much at all?
I ask because a local school district has become really concerned with their education level, which is good. However, they started with the 6th grade...and those kids were struggling too much, so they pushed back a year...all the way back to K. Where they are now expected to learn among math and recognizing patterns like we did...they have to be able to read, and write (including coming up with their own sentences). Some teachers are concerned because they do not believe 5 year old children will be able to focus enough to do this.
My concern would be that this could frustrate these children in to giving up, if TOO much was expected. (now don't misunderstand, i do believe we should push barriers, and teach them to expect more of themselves, as well as believe in themselves..).
