Alonda IbanezInfant Dies From Injuries Sustained in Hit-And-Run AccidentPomona -- Alonda Ibanez died at 2:36 a.m. at Loma Linda University Medical Center from severe head injuries, said California Highway Patrol Officer Edmund Zorrilla. The infant was in the back seat of a car driven by her father, Fernando Ibanez, when a charcoal-colored, full-sized pickup truck with tinted windows struck the car yesterday at about 7:30 a.m. and drove off, Zorrilla said. Ibanez was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital, then airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center. As of yesterday afternoon Alonda was brain dead and on life support, said Julie Smith, a Loma Linda University Medical Center spokeswoman. The family requested that Alonda be taken off life support this morning, she said. The infant was in a forward-facing car seat, which contributed to her injuries, said Zorrilla. It is the law that a child should not be put in a forward-facing seat until he or she is 12 months old and 20 pounds, he said. Alonda turned 11 months old today.
