According to a prophecy at that time, Metis would bear a son who would pose a sever threat to Zeus, so Zeus swallowed Metis after she revealed her pregnancy, out of fear he would lose his kingdom.
Nine months passed by and then suddenly Zeus started feeling a strong pain in his head and asked the Gods' smith Hephaestus to comfort him. Hephaestus opened Zeus' head with an axe and Athena managed to spring out of Zeus' head, fully-armed. From the first moment on, Athena became Zeus' favorite child.
