Challenges in Homeopathy

Homeopathic experts claim that the practice is the safest medical treatment for ailments and diseases. You can expect non-existent side effects. Since this practice mostly uses natural ingredients, it is believed that there is not much harm in undergoing it.  It is reviewed to use holistic approach to the totality of the patient’s symptoms which many believe to be very beneficial.

According to The Peterson Group, non-profit organization which is one of the leading sources of information on alternative, complementary and integrative medicines, it is important to note when taking of safety issues that although homeopathic treatments often utilize ultra-molecular dilutions of the starting material, there are also homeopathic medicines of considerably lower dilution which do contain molecules that may be active in the biochemical sense. The effectiveness and the safety of the treatment rely on the preparation and the exact amount of ingredients being mixed together.

The quality of the material used as ingredients are not assured, yet, it is very important. Pathogenic agents are in risk of being included in the concoction. Plant materials such as roots, stems, leaves, etc; microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria and viruses; and human materials such as skin tissues, hair, or body secretions can also be unconsciously added.

When it comes to quality control, there are also a lot of challenges that are faced by authorities. A doctor from Jakarta, Indonesia who chose to do the interview anonymously complains of the increasing number of homeopathic practitioners in the city. With Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviewing its stand and tightening the regulations for homeopathic practice in the United States, physicians from other countries are asking to do the same in their own locality.

Although Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) is already requiring homeopathic practitioners to prove that their products meet the basic quality standards and adhere to GMP guidelines, a lot of places have rampant production of homeopathic treatments but are without required licensing. Beyond adherence to GMP guidelines, the distinctive characteristics of homeopathic medicines have implications for quality control.

Furthermore, the specific nature of homeopathic medicines has as consequence that some of the methods for quality control and some test systems that are mandatory in pharmaceutical regulation, may at times be inapplicable or irrelevant. These include identification and quantification of active substance and toxicological testing of the final homeopathic product. Identification and assay of source materials may not be feasible at high potencies. In such cases the quality should be demonstrated by complete validation of the manufacturing and dilution process.
