Memorial Day

A day in which we remember those who have sacrificed the only thing that, in the end, matters........one's mortal existence.  My father is buried in Arlington National Cemetery (I put him there), and although he didn't die in battle, he couldn't leave Vietnam in southeast Asia, and instead brought it home with him.  His family suffered his pain for the rest of his days right along with him.  He fought this war with silence, abuse, alcoholism divorce, and eventually loneliness.  It remains my greatest single source of anguish that my father and I weren't closer near his end.  I too served my country, and my son spent four very harrowing, but honorable, years in the Marine Corp.  I see a glimmer in my sons eyes of the things he was forced to see far too early in his life.  Things I won't ever inquire about, nor will I be told voluntarily.  As with some of my own experiences, they will stay with him forever......shut away in a box deep within his soul.  THIS is what I recall when I think of memorial day.  Forgive me if I don't post a "Patriotic Default Picture", or choose between one beer of the other when I visit your profile......I feel like I'll be turning my father's memory into something akin to the Easter Bunny, and that, I'm afraid, is something I will never do.
