Entourage, The Big Five!

 

 

 

Personality is a wonderful thing, it says a lot about a person. The Big Five, is a

personality trait model. “The Big Five” trait theory includes extraversion, agreeableness

conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. Applying this particular trait theory to the

Entourage cast. Entourage is a TV series on HBO (Home Box Office) the run time was from

2004-2011. Which eventually became a movie in 2015,  the main cast includes Adrian Grenier as

Vincent Chase, Kevin Connolly as Eric Murphy, Jeremy Piven as Ari Gold, Jerry Ferrara as

Turtle, and Kevin Dillon as Jonny ‘Drama’ Chase. By applying “The Big Five” trait model to

each character, and stating where each one fits with their own individual personalities.

            Extraversion is the first trait in the model, according to (McCrae & John, 1992).  

Defining extraversion as being talkative, energetic, active, skilled in play ‘humor’, and positive

emotions.  Agreeableness is the second trait in the model. Defining agreeableness as being

trusting, appreciative, responsible, modest, and compliance. Conscientiousness is the third trait in

the model. Defining conscientiousness as organized, productive, self-disciplined, and

achievement striving.  Neuroticism is the fourth trait in the model. Defining neuroticism as tense,

touchy, anxious, hostile, unstable, self-conscious, and fluctuating moods. Openness is the fifth

and last trait in the model. Openness can be defined as curious, values intellectual matters,

artistic, wide range of interests, and unusual thought process.

            “Factor names reflect historical accidents, conceptual positions, and the entrenchment

that comes from a published body of literature and from published instruments. There are two

prominent systems for naming the factors, one derived from the lexical tradition and one from

the questionnaire tradition” (McCrae & John, 1992). Questionnaires are used a lot to define

individual personality’s and plug them into groups. However since a questionnaire wasn’t an

option for this particular grouping, decided to judge an plug each entourage character into the

big five factor model using an overall example, based off their actions, and grammar from the

HBO (Home Box Office) TV series.

Adrian Grenier plays the role of Vincent Chase, an up and coming actor in Hollywood.

He is always surrounded by people, never making decisions for his self. Always seeking out

advice from Eric his best friend/manger. In the #2.12 “good morning Siagon” episode Vince and

Mandy Moore are dating and its jeopardizing the film ‘Aquaman’ Vince and Mandy are late to

physical’s and meetings because of their relationship, causing turmoil. Ari tells ‘E’ that James

Cameron called and said Vince can be replaced. Eric and Vince confront Ari about the phone

call, Ari admits to lying. Vince tells Ari “I don’t even give a fuck about the movie anymore; I

could live with Mandy in a one bedroom in Chatsworth and be happy”. Vince laughs while

leaving Ari’s office after the statement he was acting. This scene implies Vinny can stand up for

himself, Vince ranks very high in Extraversion and Openness on ‘The Big Five’ trait model. His

artistic talents as an actor, his high energy and outgoing vibe, makes him the leader.

            Adrian as an actor plays the role of Vinny Chase accurately. Vinny couldn’t last five

minutes without any of his friends. He is very co-dependent, relying on Turtle to drive him

around everywhere he wants to go, his brother Drama to cook for him all the time, and ‘E’ to be

his rock, and main man. This group of friends bond is strong; they grew up together in Queens,

 New York. For the Aquaman primer Vince wants to take his mother, so in the episode #3.1

“Aquamom” Vince calls his mother while on a live radio talk show. His mother says she will

come to the primer; she tries to back out while at the airport. So his friends call in for

reinforcements by asking all their mothers to tag along. This group of friends brings their

mothers as dates for the primer of Aquaman. Aquaman is Vince’s, James Cameron film, James

Cameron is a big deal director in the movie business. With these examples Vincent Chase is

kind, generous, and loving. Vinny ranks very low in neuroticism, showing little to no signs of

outrageous anger problems, or hostility. Also ranking low in conscientiousness, because he lacks

self-discipline and organization. The agreeableness factor Vince ranks good in as well, with how

generous he is, inviting his mom and all to his Aquaman primer.

            Kevin Connolly plays the role of Eric Murphy, best friends with lead man Vinny Chase

since childhood. Always Vince’s go to man, also his manager, their bond is the strongest out of

the group, arguing and making up in almost every episode. In the episode #3.4 “guys and doll”

Eric needs to convince Vince to take the starring role for the film Median. “Vince this is the

movie we’ve wanted to do alright, it’s a chance for you to act. Get away from the blue screen,

the animatronic fish, this is our Scarface”. Also in this same episode ‘E’ tries to convince Vinny

about their friend Dom stealing a doll from Phil Rubinstein’s house, at first Vince doesn’t

believe him. However Eric sticks to his accusations about Dom taking the doll. Dom gives

himself up while talking with Ari, making Eric’s accusations true. Returning the doll to get

Median in the most reasonable way the guys could think of, and that’s throwing the doll over his

guarded house wall.

            In episode #3.6 “three’s company” Eric goes out with the boys and Sloan his girlfriend

shows up. After leaving and arriving home Sloan gives ‘E’ a drunk call stating that her friend

finds him to be attractive an wants to have a three some. When ‘E’ get off the phone he tells the

guys what Sloan said. Turtle and Drama ask Eric why he’s not in his car and ‘E’ replies “because

their fucked up and it was a joke”. Showing that he is humble, kind and has a great

understanding for how women can act while drinking and not taking what Sloan says too serious.

However while at lunch Sloan tells Eric that she would after all have a three some with him and

her friend. The three some happened, Eric woke up snuggling with the other women instead of

Sloan being startled and instantly rolled over to cuddle his women. Kevin Connolly’s acting is

superb in the example above. Voicing his opinion’s like usual and sticking to his guns, shows a

high rankings in Conscientiousness, by being reliable, self-disciplined and productive.  Eric

Murphy also ranks high in Openness with being original and insightful for Vince. While being

Vincent Chase’s manager he has to deal with all kinds of problems, and having to solve said

problems. Eric Murphy shows low levels of Neuroticism throughout the series, no real signs of

anxiety or self-pitying. Eric shows 50/50 signs for Agreeableness and Extraversion. Not always

forgiving, and talkative, but has a kind heart.

            Kevin Dillon plays the role of Johnny ‘Drama’ Chase. Johnny Chase is a washed up

actor living and cooking for his younger brother, while trying to get back into the business. In the

episode #2.8 “Oh Mandy” the boys are staying in Malibu at Jessica Albas house, while their

 house is getting ready for them to move in. “Well I  personally I think it blows, how am I going

to get to my auditions the pca is like a parking lot” Drama bitching and complaining about

staying beach side. Turtle is Drama best friend in the same episode the two are playing the

childhood game smack. Smack is where two people hold out their hands acting like they are

going to smack the others to see if the one flinches, if someone flinches they lose resulting in a

much harder hand smack. Turtle tags along for the ride to Dramas Audition, after while driving

home Jonny freaks out in the middle of traffic. Dramas rage about a guy behind him driving up

his ass while the guy passes he says “do you really find it necessary to drive up my ass” resulting

in the man to break check right in front of him. The man gets out and spits on his car n comments

about how he was an actor like twenty years go. Drama grabs a golf club beating in the man’s

windshield. Only stopping because Turtle tells he him booked the gig from the audition he just

had, however getting arrested on the highway for his actions.

            Kevin Dillon isn’t a great actor, this being said his biggest and most popular role is

Johnny ‘Drama’. Drama ranks very high in Neuroticism, dramatic mood swings, and anger

problems throughout the whole series. Also ranking high in Extraversion with his assertiveness,

and being highly active. Drama ranks low in Agreeableness, Openness, and Conscientiousness.

Clearly lacking forgiveness, and self-discipline, Jonny Chase is totally overly dramatic and

negative. Throughout the series he shows dramatic highs and depressing responses, resulting in

miserable and pathetic actions.

In episode #3.6 “three’s company” Johnny Drama is playing the godfather game, which

is he a character in and has been playing all day. The gang walks in and Turtle says “that’s the

closest you’re ever gonna come to working with an academy award winner”. Drama quickly

responds very hostel “Yeah nice try Turtle, but I guess the three episodes of A Different World I

did with Marisa Tomei was just a figment of my imagination”. Also in this episode Drama is

upset that Ari isn’t calling him about potential work since Ari signed him. This seems to be a

popular trend for Drama practically begging, and always in the shadows.

            Jeremy Piven plays the role of Ari Gold, Vinny Chase’s agent. Ari is a pompous arrogant

asshole. In the #2.12 “good morning Siagon” episode Ari calls ‘E’ over worked and stressed out

 saying “We’re going to hell so bring your sunblock”. In “the review” episode Eric goes to Ari’s

office about a negative review, Ari yells at ‘E’ to not mention the bad review. Resulting in an

incredible saying “let’s hug it out bitch”. Ari tells that to Eric when ready to end the meeting. Ari

is comical but over worked and highly aggressive. Constantly yelling and throwing things, Ari

Gold ranks the highest in Neuroticism, while ranking low in all the other factors. In the “guys

and doll” episode Eric calls Ari early in the morning in hopes to wake him up, however Ari is

already up and working out.  “What the fuck do you want cunt muscle” is what Gold says

answering the phone.

Jeremy Piven is an excellent actor; his acting doesn’t seem forced like Kevin Dillon’s.

Jeremy Piven also wrote a book based off his Entourage character Ari Gold, called “Rules to

Rule by The Golden Standard”. Entertaining with his aggressive behavior and comical comments

 like “Tell Drama he’s on my to do list right after inserting needles in my cock” from episode

#3.6 “three’s company”. Also in the same episode Gold tries to get Drama a role as soon as

possible in order for Vince to answer his phone calls. Telling his employees to find him a job

with a reward of ten thousand dollars “I don’t care if it’s a porn shoot at which he is being gang

rapped by a gaggle of silverback apes”. Along with emailing ‘E’ to get ahold of Vince the email

included “you drunkin’ Irish short midget cock sucker, I need someone to call me back”. Ari

Gold is also married with children in the series, and he is also Jewish.

            Last but not least Jerry Ferrara plays the role of Turtle, Vinny’s long time childhood

friend from Queens. Turtle and Drama are very close in the series, however managing to

outshine Drama. Throughout the series Drama is Turtles wing man with the ladies and vice

versa, these two are buddies to the fullest. In episode #3.8 “the release” Turtle has to save Johnny

in a coffee shop, Drama is freaking out over a free cup of coffee. “Jesus Christ Drama what the

fuck, you don’t need any more coffee you’re wired enough already you only got 15 minutes to

get to Ed Burns”. Dramas blow out results in him missing the audition however Turtle was there

by his side the whole time, as usual. “What do you want me to say Drama you got to get the

temper under control” Turtle states to help Drama out, however he replies with “Fuck anger

management”.

            Turtle is the only one not directly involved with the acting business, he is Vinny Chases

driver and deals with issues around the house. He supplies the group with marijuana being an

active smoker. Turtle has street smarts, and relaxes the group in high intense situations. He tends

to get over looked up is loved at the same time. Turtle sticks to his roots by wearing urban flair,

mostly basketball jerseys, for every once in a while an exception of a suit. In episode #3.10 “I

wanna be sedated” Turtle has to hunt down his rapper Siagon only to be let down that he is

hiding out at a hotel. Come to find that his thug friends don’t want Turtle as Siagons manager

that someone else is going to manage him. Turtle is cool, calm, and collective. While Drama yet

again is freaking out being held over a balcony railing. All Turtle wants is his money leaving in

peace with forty grand. Turtle ranks very low in Neuroticism with no real signs of aggression.

Ranking high in Consciousness being organized, and reliable also high in Agreeableness,

Openness, and Extraversion, by being outgoing, trusting, and insightful.

            In conclusion, taking McCrae’s big five factor theory, which is a minimization of

Cattell’s Sixteen Personality Factors. And applying it to the Entourage main cast, with brief

examples for Turtle, Drama, Ari, Eric, and Vinny. This long lasting group of friends, and family

have gone through ups and downs, while always sticking by each other’s sides. Vince, being the

leader Eric being the role model, Ari being the loud mouth, Turtle being the innocent one, and

Drama being in the background is an accurate summary. Ari Gold is the most popular character,

which is understandable with his outrageously funny outbursts, and highly aggressive manner.

Drama is the least favorite character, with his poor acting abilities. However they all seem to fit

Abstract

This paper examines three articles/chapters that discuss the unconscious mind. Epstein (1994)

talks about multiple processing theories, influences of emotions on thinking, thinking on

emotions, and much more. McAdams, Dan P. (2001) talks about repressors, perceptual defense,

implicit learning, and much more. Kihlstrom (2008) talks about the cognitive unconscious,

implicit memory, the motivational unconscious, and much more. This paper will discuss how

these three articles/chapters are alike, different, strengths, and weaknesses.

 

Various alternative concepts of the unconscious mind

Repression is the act of forcing something out of the conscious mind. An intensely

negative experience from the past may no longer be consciously remembered, but the event lives

 in the unconscious and plays itself out in conscious experiences, anxiety, aggression, and dread.

McAdams, Dan P. (2001) Repressors are described as persons who experience little anxiety on a

conscious level and who adopt highly defensive approaches to life. McAdams, Dan P. (2001)

cognitive unconscious is a fundamentally adaptive system that automatically, effortlessly, and

intuitively organizes experience and directs behaviors. Epstein (1994) Epstein’s article briefly

talks about how most societies have formed some sort of Religion. Because for many

individuals, rational, analytical thinking fails to provide a satisfying way to explain how the

world works. There are two major systems in which people adapt to the world: experiential and

rational. Those in the experiential system are called implicit beliefs, or also schemata while those

in the rational system are called beliefs. Schemata consists mostly of generalization’s glean from

highly emotional significant past experiences. Epstein (1994)

 

            Perceptual defense is the unconscious monitoring of sensory perception by the censoring

force of repression within the person. McAdams, Dan P. (2001) Implicit learning is learning

something without focusing on it. For example being raised with bilingual parents a person will

learn both languages naturally without a whole lot of effort an focus. In every article/chapter the

writers discuss Sigmund Freud all speaking highly of Freud. Because Freud popularized the

psychological unconscious mind however he did not discover it.  Freudian unconscious are

closely tied to sexual urges, aggression, and survival. All the writers agree and disagree with

Freud’s theory, behavior an thoughts don’t always have to revolve around sexual urges or

aggression. Every article/chapter gives examples to what the writers are trying to explain,

because examples help understand things better, also making it easier to comprehend. Here is an

example from the writers point of view gathers from all the required reading. Ones behavior can

change over the simplest of things, take a song on a radio. Person is driving down the road and a

song came on the radio the listener hasn’t heard in a very long time. All of a sudden the driver is

tearing up, the song has triggered an unconscious memory an brought it to conscious awareness

 causing the driver to feel emotions of sadness.

 

            In implicit memory, the subject was perceptually aware of the event at the time it

occurred, but the memory of the event has been lost to conscious recollection. In implicit

perception, the subjects were unaware of the event at the time it occurred: thus, it is the

perception itself that is unconscious. Kihlstrom (2008) Explicit motivation is defined as the

desire to engage in some sort of activity presented by a craving for sex or lusting for love.

Freud’s belief that repression and other defense mechanisms were designed to provide humans

unaware of their true emotional state, especially anxiety. Take fear for example when people feel

scared their heart rates go up dramatically causing panic an anxiety. Kihlstrom (2008) But what

 causes people to get scared? Everyone is different, scared in their own ways which some of the

cause is in the unconscious mind.

 

            Epstein describes repression as occurring when a person has tacit thoughts or impulses

that are too guilt arousing to be consciously accepted. Epstein (1994) The result is that certain

 material gets forced into the unconscious mind which can’t be accessible.  Epstein states that

Freud has a critical weakness in the unconscious theory, that it makes no sense from an

evolutionary view point. Thinking on emotion is influenced strictly on emotional feeling. If a

person feels targeted the person might instantly respond defensively most likely feel angry and

highly aggressive. However it’s all in how the person interoperates the actions or words directed

at them. When people are highly emotional they tend to not think rationally, people just act out.

In some cases people tend to over think a situation conjure up things that were supposedly

said and or actions that supposedly happened that never did.

 

            Experiential and Rational System consist of eleven different items on both sides

comparing the two systems. Epstein made the list however in the McAdams Dan P. (2001)

chapter the writers minimalized the system down to eight instead of eleven. Experiential system

 is compared to the rational system. In McAdams Dan P. (2001) description is holistic compared

to analytic, emotional compared to logical. Past intuition “vibes” compared to conscious

appraisal of events. Understands reality in metaphors, narratives, and concrete images compared

 to understanding reality in words, numbers, and abstract symbols. Rapid processing compared to

slower processing, Slower to change compared to rapid change. Makes broad generalizations

compared to making finer distinctions. Passively and preconsciously compared to actively and

consciously. Self-evident compared to justification. List is stating Experiential system first

comparing it to the Rational system second for each example. The two McAdam’s left out of

Epstein’s comparison are, associationistic connections to logical connections. And crudely

integrated compared to highly integrated. Both lists get the overall point across with the

comparisons. 

It was a long cold winter day; I didn’t have anywhere to go or anyone to talk to. So I started to look out the window and wonder what life would be like somewhere else. Thought about how when I was grown up I would be working for a huge business as a CEO. As I find myself day dreaming about the future the phone rings, I run to answer it hoping it’s something important for ruining my thoughts. I answer the phone but no one is there so I hang up and go back to looking out the window, five minutes pass and the phone rings again. I run to answer it and when I do, all I hear is heavy breathing so I ask “who is this calling?” still no response. I hang up and the phone rings again within seconds, scared to answer I run into another room.

The phone keeps ringing and ringing I have no idea who it is, my parents are out of town on business so I have no one to run to. I pick up the phone and call my friend Monica, “Monica did you call here” it sounds like she’s eating something but she replies with a full mouth “No, why?”  I let out a soft sigh “oh just wondering, so what are you up to? Would you like to come over?” I can hear Monica shoving more food into her mouth “Nothing, but I can’t come over, sorry!” At this point I want to scream, I say ok and hang up the phone.

I decide to watch a movie, I pop in “Fight Club” and not even twenty minutes into the movie the phone rings, so I answer hoping it is mom or dad calling to check up on me. “Hello” and all I hear is silence so I say hello again, then I hear something it sounds like a whimper. I try to listen even closer but it’s too soft to be sure if it is a whimper. I unplug the phone and get back to my movie.

I notice it’s now dark outside, I turn the outside light on and I notice a shadow in the snow, it looks like a figure of a person. I look out another window and the shadow is gone, maybe I’m just losing my mind. The wind picks up and starts to throw snow all over the place it looks like a huge storm is coming in. I walk to the kitchen to make something to eat, I look through the back window and I see a figure off in the distance, I shake my head and open the freezer. “Yum, Egos” I burst out when I notice mom bought me a huge ass box. I put two in the toaster and get my syrup and peanut butter ready.

As I’m eating my Egos and watching the rest of my movie, I hear a knock at the door. I go to answer the door and no one is there. “Hmm, maybe it was just the wind” I finish my Egos and clean my dish. I look at the clock and its only 9 o’clock, “wow, where has the day gone” I mutter to myself because I feel lazy for not leaving the house all day. I turn the phone back on and look threw Netflix to find another movie, as I’m searching through the comedies and the phone rings. This time when I answer I hear someone screaming “Are you alright” I scream into the phone, and then I hear another scream and what sounds like heavy breathing. I get scared and hang up the phone.

I run into my parent’s room so I can feel safe, but the phone starts to ring and ring and ring, it stops and five minutes later the phone rings again. I wait for the phone to stop ringing I pick up the phone and call my father’s cell phone, but no answer. “Great, just great” I hang it up and the phone rings again, I take a huge gulp “Hello” more silence “Hello, I don’t find this to be very funny, I called the police and they are listening in” I hear heavy breathing and a man says “No their not” I hang up the phone.

Scared to death I turn off all the lights in the house, the phone rings I answer but don’t speak a word “Hang up on me again and there will be trouble” I respond “Who are you?” all I so is hear heavy breathing “Don’t worry about who I am, and just listen you little bitch”. I feel the need to cry but I hold it back so he doesn’t think I’m as scared as I am. “What do you want from me” I reply. The man breaks out in a quick laugh “What I want from you, you ask. Hmmmm I don’t know start out by turning the fucking lights back on” I feel my heart start to race and I know that if I don’t keep calm I might get hurt. “What lights all my lights are on I don’t know what you’re talking about, you must have the wrong house” thinking to myself yes I got him that was a great thing to say. “I don’t think so Jessica” he replies; now he sounds all mad.

All I can think is “Oh great I’m going to die tonight” I still have the phone to my ear and I walk around the dark house and look out the windows to see if I see shadows anywhere. I hear another scream, but this time it echoed. It wasn’t just over the phone it sounded like it was coming from outside. “Please what do you want from me, I’m just a kid”. No reply but more screaming it sounds even closer than before. I put the phone on mute and run to the kitchen and grab a knife out of the stand on the counter top.

As I crouch down onto the floor next to the sink, I hear the doorbell ring. “Answer it Jessica” the man’s voice over the phone says. “No”. “Answer it now you stupid bitch, I have a surprise for you” I get up and go to the door look out the window, and no one is around. I unlock the door and open it I still don’t see anything even in the distance, as I’m going to close the door he starts to speak. “Look down”. I look down and I see a pool of blood on the door mat. Quickly slamming the door shut “What the fuck do you want from me you psycho” I scream into the phone. “I want you to fallow my instructions if you want your parents to live”.

This can’t be happening to me this has to be a dream or some sort of mistake. “My parents are out of town” I hear another scream “Ok, if you don’t believe me I’ll prove it to you”.  I hear the phone hang up quick. I think I lost connection, but I see lights, they look like car headlights he must have hung up because of the car lights.
