byter's blog: "whatever!"

created on 09/14/2006  |  http://fubar.com/whatever/b1082
Yeah yeah, i know its only a short journey but it was -6 C this morning and the bike decided not to start at work. I started to push it and then a freindly persen offered to push. Well we gave it a few tries and then she fired up LOL. All I can think was that the oil was a bit too thick to allow the engine to fire, and the pushing and trying to get it start gave it enough to fire up. Thing is my bro has my battery charger at the moment, so I have to hope that the bike fires up tonight. Oh yeah i had a revelation. I have just realised why some bikers wear chaps, so it stops the front of the legs getting cold. They are easier to walk around in than over trousers, or i presume so. I always thought it was a fashion statement, but this morning it hit me LOL.

Last night at work ....

I seriously think that some of the staff think that the morte trouble they cause without getting into real trouble, the quicker we will go back to the old way of doing things. Well I hate to tell them but no it won't. what could happen is that the company decides that maybe it is better to have contractors and go for the lowest priced contract and make the staff redundant. They was told things are going to change and some think they have some power, well smell the coffee as you haven't and they will find out as time goes by. Last night was a bit of a stressful one, but we know what they are upto and plannning for their next moves. The previous night i saw some of the trouble makers talking to each other, and i didn't take any notice. Of course i told the other chargehands what was going on, but thought well if they are trying to stir things up then let them. Give them enough rope and they will hang themselves! Tonight could be the pain though as the supervisor is off tonight. This time though we will be co-ordinating more than ever and will try to predict what they are planning next :)

They have done what!

Well news i found out yesterday was that a certain person has cracked the latest firmware update on the psp. Thats 3.03 as far as i know, and the comments left for the news was that it works and we will have to wait until sony release 3.04. To be honest this opens up a world as to what you can use your psp for. One thing i wouldn't use it for is illegal downloaded games, because you will be killing the market in the end, because i don't think the market is that big at the moment. Still looking at the pre releases, its looking good. Only problem i have with mine is that due to being a US machine, i can't buy movies on umd here because of region encoding. Games are ok because I have already bought a few and plan on getting some more. But the homebrew market has some interesting applications out there.

one more night ....

Why do i get the impression that the mumms are being treated as a forum. I thought we had those anyway, so the mumms are designed for a one off vote and a quick comment, or so I thought. And then you get the same group of people that think they are so important with their views. If you don't like the mumm in question, don't bother voting or commenting. All you are doing is feeding the attention whores who use it for this purpose. Anyway I have the first series of spooks on dvd finally, even though its been out for a couple of years( for those in the US its known as MI-5 i have been told LOL). If you want some decent drama then get hold of a copy, you won't be disappointed. As for the other films, well i got hold of harvey and brief encounter, i see them as classics, but then everyone has their favourites :D

snow

Woohoo it actually snowed last night. I was out checking some trains and saw it falling and then just stood there looking into the night sky, as the snow flakes slowly drifted in the spotlights. Damn that was a magical sight :D Anyway the snowball fight started a little later once enough settled and I was surprised who started it ... the supervisor! I don't think any of the staff escaped, well i was able to dodge a few LOL. Some got buckets of snow poured over them, but i was missed :D Now as for riding home, well i was already told someone dropped their scooter as they was coming into the yard. Well it was a bit slippery but i got out ok, it wasn't until i got near home that it looked a bit dangerous, but the bikes ok LOL.

What an idiot!

Yeah me! Well as some may know i have been working on some code based around the irclib to transfer large files because all the other IM clients and file transfer programs out there, limit the file size that can be sent. Well i found a little tutorial and decided to base mine on the ircbot example. This wasn't a problem as i couldn't find any examples as to how to use the dcc parts of the libs. Well i checked to see if the library had been updated and downloaded a new copy. Guess what they had, yep an example of how to do dcc send and receive. It looks a lot easier than what i was experimenting with LOL Does that mean the code i was working, was all a waste? Nope as i realised that i can still use it for other projects. Now i can either copy the example code and expand around it, as the author allows you to do as you wish with it, or pull it in and add some glue. I think i'll copy the example and state in the code that i have used the example code as it does what i want. The only thing i want to add is a resume function, which shouldn't be too hard. Hey i can hear you sleeping over there! LOL

meetings

I have met 4 people who are on this site, and both times were good. Well to be honest, 2 i visit in the states quite often. To me its a good holiday plus I am being able to talk in person people I consider good friends. The first time I flew to the states I was scared, I think it was more what they would make of me than what if they don't meet up to my expectations. I think this stems from the fact that I used to connect toa few bulletin boards before the net really took off over here, and went to a few meets. They were good times and made some good friends. If you are going to meet someone for the first time, just don't get your expectations of the person you are going to meet too high. Then when you actually do meet and they are better in person than online, then you will better for actually going through with it.

Da bike

Yes I finally got around to fitting the new fender. Well me thinking that if i can't cut the bolt off, i didn't really want to break the old fender off the bike. " hours later of cutting the head off and leaving enough to still trap the bolt, I realised i should have broken the old one off and then cut from the other side. Well when i cut that side off I still couldn't get the old blot out because there was no head to undo the bolt LOL. A quick use of a file sorted that as it freed the part of the nut left to undo by hand and the bolt dropped out. It was a bit of a squeeze putting the new one in but it fitted and bolted up perfectly. As i was down there on one side of the bike, something caught my eye. It seems that where the indicator enters the upper fairing, it somehow got broken and the panel screw was tightned too far. Now when this happened is the question because its a slight crack and fixable with a bit of super glue, but I have a feeling it may have been done when the bike was having new downpipes fitted. At the time i was so happy to have it back that i didn't check for things like that, plus i had to have the bike picked up to have a new lock fitted when that broke. Just pisses me off that it happened but its easily fixable, plus i have some touch up of the paintwork to do because i dropped it one day while trying to reverse walk it LOL. Thats another story and you will have to ask if you want to hear it LOL.

hot linking, ask first

There was a story on Digg that concerned hot linking and what the person done to stop people on myspace using his bandwith and image. Now usually its polite to ask if its ok to hot link to someones image or anything else they have online, because they may be paying for thier own hosting and once the traffic goes up, then they get charged. Well this happened to him, at first it was small and didn't dent the bandwith he was paying for, so he let it go. But then the hits jumped and he was starting to look at a big bill for the bandwith used. So he changed the image that everyone was hot linking to, and waited to see what happened. Lets just say it was a very nasty pic LOL. Now would i have done the same thing when a simple block line would have stopped them? Yes because its so funny to see what people would say when they realise that the image has changed. Yes its nasty to do, but it teaches people a lesson that its polite to ask first.

Why am i here?

Thats a good question because normally i am not the most social of people, but I have tried to talk to people. Just wonder if I have tried to talk to the wrong type. I don't need a new girlfriend, so thats one thing off the list if anyone dares to read the profile. I don't need the attention, as I am happy being on my own as with people. I certainly don't have visions of grandeur and need people to bow down to me. I just followed a friend and though maybe make a few more friends, and this also gives me some destinations to visit when i go on holiday. Though the best thing is to get a different perspective on things. No matter how stupid or unimportant someone thinks they are, they have an opinion and can shine a new light on a problem. Anyway the darwin awards have been announced and damn are they funny. I can see how they got the awards because anyone with a modicum of common sense would not do any of these things LOL. I know evil to laugh at someones misfortune, but I think its unbelievable that they didn't consider the consequences before they tried what they was going to do.
