If the liberties of the American people are ever destroyed, they will fall by the hands of the clergy.

I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute-where no Catholic prelate would tell the president (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishoners for whom to vote-where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference-and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the president who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.

The Bible account of the creation of Eve is a preposterous fable. The dogma of the infallibility of the Bible is no more self-evident than is that of the infallibility of the popes.

Hell is an outrage on humanity. When you tell me that your Deity made you in his own image, I reply that he must have been very ugly. There is in every village a torch-the teacher; and an extinguisher-the clergyman.

Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church and the private schools, supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separated.

I can hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true; for if so the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my Father, Brother and almost all my best friends, will be everlastingly punished. And this is a damnable doctrine.

For centuries the leaders of Christian thought spoke of women as a necessary evil, and the greatest saints of the Church are those who despise women the most.
