VANCOUVER — A former New Westminster, B.C., man convicted of murder was sentenced to life in prison Thursday with no parole for at least 17 years. The killer, Gary Johnston, had already served two years in custody awaiting trial for the fatal stabbing of Vic Fraser in Surrey 13 years ago. Johnston was earlier convicted of second-degree murder for stabbing Fraser nine times. Justice Robert Crawford said the killing was "remorseless, brutal, sustained and violent." Fraser likely lived for about 10 minutes before he bled out. "It is unimaginable to know one's life blood is swamping one's internal organs over several minutes," Crawford added. Johnston had broken into the Surrey home of Fraser's sister Jeanie Fraser, burberry outlet cheap who said Thursday she was a bit disappointed Johnston didn't get the maximum sentence. "At least he's not going to victimize another family," the sister said. Vic Fraser, 42, was a popular trucker who was well-loved by his family, which was devastated by the crime which went unsolved for years. Second-degree murder carries a mandatory penalty of life in prison with no parole for between 10 and 25 years. Prosecutor Lothar Kiner had asked B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Crawford to impose a parole ineligibility period between 17 and 21 years, considering Johnston, 52, had a lengthy criminal record and had killed another man after murdering Fraser on March 10, 1998. Johnston had fled town and moved to Regina after killing Fraser. Eighteen months later, Johnston stabbed another man to death, wrapped his body in plastic and dumped it in a field. He was charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He served seven years for that crime. Once Johnston was released, B.C.'s Unsolved Homicide squad took charge of the Fraser homicide and decided to do an undercover operation, which ended with Johnston confessing details of Fraser's murder to an officer posing as a crime boss in Ontario.

Later in the evening, Mr. Papandreou arrived to join them. He walked alone into the Palais des Festivals, near handprints in concrete of the building's usual visitors--Meg Ryan, Angelina Jolie and Catherine Deneuve. After his meeting, it appeared the European leaders had scored one victory by pulling the referendum forward to early December. Greek officials had earlier signaled that it would be held in January, after the completion of negotiations on a new Greek bailout.burberry outlet cheap Instead, there seems to be agreement on an earlier referendum. If successful, it would clear the way for a broad mandate to continue pressing cuts on Greece. Europe had hoped this G-20 summit would have been a chance to demonstrate to the rest of the world that it has its debt crisis under control. An all-night euro-zone meeting just last week had fashioned a "comprehensive" plan to aid Greece, bolster the bloc's bailout fund and recapitalize the region's banks. That is now in tatters, and the image Europe is presenting is one of more confusion and uncertainty than ever. That is particularly damaging considering how much Europe now needs the rest of the world. Voters in Germany and other strong countries in the euro zone's north have insisted they will provide no more money to propping up Greece and the rest of the periphery. Thus the European Union is turning to China and other emerging countries with surplus cash. Mr. Sarkozy held a dinner with Chinese premier Hu Jintao Wednesday; no specific commitments emerged from that meeting, and the Chinese have said they want more detail and clarity from Europe on its plans. Mr. Papandreou stunned Europe and financial markets this week by calling for a plebiscite on the latest, €130 billion ($178 billion) rescue package for Greece, which is tied to deeper austerity policies in the economically suffering country as well as the restructuring of Greek bonds.

CANNES, France—Europe's leaders, making plain that they've reached the end of their patience with Greece, demanded that the beleaguered nation declare whether it wanted to remain in the euro currency union—or risk going it alone in a dramatic secession. "Does Greece want to remain part of the euro zone or not," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said. "That is the question the Greek people must now answer." The extraordinary rupture with the rest of Europe—burberry outlet cheapwhose leaders have insisted for months that an exit from the currency union is simply inconceivable—follows Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou's stunning decision Monday to call a referendum on his country's bailout. Given the deep unpopularity of the budget-cutting measures that have accompanied the bailout, a "no" vote is a real possibility. That could send Greece, and possibly the euro zone itself, into chaos. Mr. Papandreou said the referendum could be held Dec. 4 or 5 at the earliest, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Ms. Merkel said. Greek Parliament must vote on whether the referendum is held. World leaders are gathering in this Riviera city, more accustomed to movie stars than motorcades, for the annual summit of the Group of 20 large developing and industrialized nations. But the deliberations of the G-20 are now a sideshow to the Greek main event. In a series of hurriedly scheduled meetings, Europe's top powers huddled to plot their strategy for responding to the new uncertainty posed by Greece and to dress down the Greek prime minister. Wednesday evening, before the official kick-off of the G-20 summit, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Ms. Merkel, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde and the two top officials of the European Union, José Manuel Barroso and Herman Van Rompuy, met in a strategy session. In a phone call earlier in the day, Mr. Barroso told Mr. Papandreou that the referendum call threatened his country's lifeline of aid.

On Monday, the alleged victim told court Paxton used a cane, leash or extension cord to administer regular beatings. He testified he didn't leave because he didn't want to look like a "sissy." He said the daily beatings and choking at the hands of Paxton began on Oct. 31, 2008, when he moved to Calgary from Winnipeg. The man was dropped off at a Regina hospital in April 2010 weighing 87 pounds. By then he was suffering from a fractured eye socket, and most of his bottom lip and part of his tongue were missing. Back to a healthy weight but still disfigured, the man slowly described the violence he said his former friend inflicted on him. The judge-alone trial in front of Court of Queen's Bench Justice Sheilah Martin trial began on Sept. 27 and is scheduled to last five weeks. The alleged victim is expected to continue testifying on Wednesday.

On Tuesday morning, the man testified that he performed sex acts on Paxton because he would have done anything to stop the beatings. Testifying for a second day against his former friend, the alleged victim said oral sex and masturbation would happen on a "spur of the moment, when Paxton was in the mood.” "Personally I thought it was disgusting, but I was in survival mode. I would do anything to not get beaten," he said. CBC As the alleged victim testified about sex acts, Paxton appeared angry and uncomfortable, shaking his head and muttering under his breath. The man also told court that Paxton attacked him in the fall of 2009 with a metre-long two-by-four, leaving him with several broken ribs and perforated bowels. "I thought I was going to die I was in so much pain. I couldn't breathe or I was breathing too much, I was hyperventilating ... I was slipping in and out of consciousness. And I told Dustin, I said, 'Dude I'm not doing good, call the ambulance,'" he said. Weapons used, alleged victim testif

The company got real results on most of those items. There’s a break fee of $39-million. There’s a process to establish the value of Alpha and CDS and, just as importantly, TMX has the ability to opt out of the friendly deal if it turns out that the price for Alpha or CDS is too high. TMX was worried that borrowing too much money would hinder its ability to expand in good times and weather bad times. TMX says it’s comfortable with the fact that the new company would be able to pay down the debt in short order, something Maple has always said is possible. That may be true, or it may be that TMX didn’t have the ability to move Maple on this question. But the fact is,Longchamp Outlet some shareholders are going to call for a recapitalization using borrowed money if the Maple deal fails anyway, in a bid to support the share price, so it’s not a smart hill to fight and die on. On governance, TMX negotiated a deal that gives the company an independent chair of the board, rather than one nominated by Maple. There will be a fully independent governance committee of the board. That will go some way to providing protection for users of the markets who are concerned that a bank-dominated Maple Group would not be as friendly to other market users. In the end, it will be regulators at the Ontario Securities Commission, their equivalents in Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta, and at the Competition Bureau in Ottawa who will have to judge whether the deal is fair to customers. But TMX has done a lot to ensure a deal that makes sense for all.

TMX Group Inc. (X-T43.801.443.40%)got what it could for shareholders from the Maple Group consortium in the friendly deal the parties just struck. Now it’s up to regulators to ensure that users of Canada’s markets are protected. TMX was in a funny spot as it dealt with the hostile bid from Maple Group. As a public company that also provides a public service because it’s the operator of the country’s main stock markets, TMX’s board faced conflicting priorities. Should the board worry only about the price for shareholders, or be willing to accept less for shareholders to ensure that market users are protected? TMX’s negotiating position wasn’t strong as it faced Maple’s 13 members, which includes some of the country’s biggest banks. There is no other bidder. Markets have plunged since Maple made its $50-a-share bid in June, making extracting concessions more difficult. Behind the scenes, there was considerable pressure from shareholders who just wanted a deal signed to ensure a better chance that they got their $50 a share from Maple.Longchamp Outlet Not a lot of things are going right for money managers in this market. Nobody wanted the TMX messing around with this bid, which carries a handsome premium. In that environment, investors in TMX didn’t have a lot of time for talk of stakeholders such as market customers. They cared about shareholders, and the price they got. Stakeholders – the customers and users of TMX, mainly – are the regulators’ problems. However, that’s short-sighted because any transaction that didn’t protect consumers of exchange services would die at the hands of regulators, and shareholders would never see the $50. Given that, TMX managed a deal that has a bit of everything. TMX had issues about the amount of money that Maple borrowed to back the offer, the lack of independent governance and the uncertainty about some key parts of the business plan. TMX wanted to know what it would cost to acquire the CDS Inc. clearing system and the rival trading business known as Alpha. And TMX wanted protection for its shareholders in the form of a break fee, in case regulators nixed the transaction. The company got real results on most of those items. A Canadian man has admitted to helping Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi’s son flee the country last month, according to the National Post. The Toronto-based newspaper reported that Gary Peters, president of the Cambridge, Ont.,longchamp outlet private security firm Can/Aus Security & Investigations International, was Saadi Gadhafi’s longtime bodyguard. Peters, a landed immigrant, told the National Post that he was part of the team that helped the slain dictator’s son escape across Libya’s southern border to Niger. Peters said that he was shot in an ambush returning to Libya and came back to Canada to seek medical treatment. The National Post reported that Peters had worked for the Gadhafi family since 2004 and continued to serve as a bodyguard during the NATO campaign against the dictator, which ended in his death earlier this month. He told the National Post that his former employer, the third of the dictator’s sons, wants to move to Canada, as he has property in this country. “The man’s a gentlemen,” he said, describing him to the National Post as “very educated, very nice guy.”

If you ask Keith Olbermann, Rob Ford is the worst person in the world. Toronto’s mayor was featured in Olbermann’s Worst Persons segment of his Countdown program Friday for his behaviour when he called 911 after his encounter with This Hour has 22 Minutes’ Mary Walsh. “The new conservative executive (in Toronto) has had a rough start but never was it rougher than Monday,” the political pundit said. Early Monday morning Ford was approached by Walsh, tiffany outlet in character as Marg Delahunty, on the driveway of his Etobicoke home. Ford then called 911. The CBC, citing anonymous police sources, reported that Ford said, “You ... bitches! Don't you f---ing know? I'm Rob f---ing Ford, the mayor of this city!” Police Chief Bill Blair has since said that these reports are inaccurate, and that Ford never used the word “bitches.” Olbermann read all but the first remark on-air as he railed against Ford and named him the worst person in the world, edging out Glenn Beck. “Toronto’s Rob effing Ford The mayor of his effing city. Today’s effing worst person in the effing world,” said Olbermann in conclusion. Ford, who is now in Guadalajara, Mexico, for the closing ceremonies of the Pan Am Games, could not be reached for comment.
