Lafitte, Grand Isle get receptive ear to plea for flood protection 06:48 PM CDT on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 Bill Capo / Eyewitness News The mayors of Grand Isle and Lafitte went to Baton Rouge Tuesday to ask Governor Bobby Jindal for help with flood protection for their damaged and vulnerable cities. Video: Watch the Story After Hurricanes Gustav and Ike severely damaged Grand Isle's levees, Mayor David Camardelle asked Governor Bobby Jindal for up to $50 million to supplement repairs by the Corps of Engineers, plus plans to boost storm protection levees and break-waters. Camardelle said the barrier island provides protection for other areas farther inland. "To my brother Timmy in Lafitte, he had more water in his community. There was more water pushed toward South Lafourche Levee District, more water pushed toward Houma district." "They are going to be stuck on stuck until we get a barrier system out there immediately so that we can protect what was not damaged by these two storms," said Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard. After the latest Lafitte flood, Mayor Tim Kerner took plans to Jindal for 60 miles of eight-foot high levees to protect upper and lower Lafitte and Barataria at a cost of $60 million. He said the result would be reliable storm surge protection for 10,000 residents. "What we are looking at now people wouldn't be devastated, they wouldn't have water in their house, and everybody would be high and dry," he said. "It’s going to provide some assurance to those residents that this is a safe place to live,” said Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts. “It is going to save the federal government millions if not billions of dollars in disaster claims." Neither Camardelle nor Kerner knew what sort of reception they would receive here in Baton Rouge. But Jindal told them he understands the need for these projects, and he is seeking funding for them. "The good news in meeting with these mayors is there are at least three different places where we can go to get these dollars, CDBG dollars, the Corps' budget, as well as these surplus dollars,” said Jindal. “It’s too important for us not to do this. People's homes have been flooded twice now in three years." The mayors left the meeting pleased and grateful, and hoping they will soon have the money to turn hurricane protection plans into reality. "These communities would not survive if they didn't get the financial help. They are too small a community in the numbers who live there,” said State Senator John Alario. “But they are too important for the rest of the whole New Orleans and Jefferson Parish region. They are the first line of defense. If they don't survive, the rest of us won't survive."
subject: Pray 4 Me! post date: 2008-10-06 03:45:08 views: 13 comments: 3 ratings: 0 I have diagnosed with moderate cervical dysplasia which may or may not turn into cancer, I've been seeing a Neuropathic Doctor, to see if he can help me with all this. I just don't feel like getting my shit ripped on, they wanted me to go through a LEEP procedure which to me seems like the same damn thing as a Colposcopy so instead I'm trying to heal myself with natural means. Please pray for me in the hopes that this Neuropathic Doctor can help reverse it back to normal. I have done alot of research showing they have done so with many things such as vitamins to build up the immune system to fight the abnormal cell growth. All in all lets just all hope & pray that this will work, cause I'm not looking forward to them ripping on my cervix & or having any other invasive procedures done! I've been trying so hard to quit smoking in which I did for about 12 days & know I can again just with the stress of everything going on it's hard as hell. Please if you'll loves me take the time to ask GOD to help heal me from this! Thank you all & much love!

Skydivers make unprecedented jump over Everest By Gopal Sharma Sun Oct 5, 1:27 AM ET Three skydivers made the first ever parachute jump over Mount Everest on Sunday, organisers and participants said, culminating years of preparation. About 32 skydivers from more than 10 countries including Britain, Canada, the United States and New Zealand have been in the Everest region since last week to jump from an aircraft flying 465 feet (142 metres) higher than the Everest summit. On Sunday, Wendy Smith of New Zealand, Holly Budge of Britain and Neil Jones (Canadian/British) made the leap, said Krishna Aryal, an official of the Explore Himalaya, the agency that provided the logistics. "They looked like tiny birds flying in the blue sky as they jumped from the plane," Aryal, who saw the jump from Syangboche in the Everest region, told Reuters. "This is the first of its kind and has never been tried before." All three were in freefall for nearly half a minute and then opened their canopies before landing at a flat drop zone after cruising over the mountain, Aryal said. They used parachutes that were larger than normal size to help them cruise and descend fast through the thin air of the world's highest drop zone. All three wore oxygen masks. New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa first climbed Mount Everest's 8,850-metre (29,035 feet) peak 55 years ago. More than 3,000 climbers, among them a 16-year-old boy, a 76-year-old man, a man with an artificial limb and a blind person, have since reached the top of the mountain. "It was stunning. I had never seen so many mountains before," Smith said. "To be on top of the world was simply stunning. Thank you." Organisers said more such jumps will be organised this week.
