A shot in the dark

Around midnight last night I saw an emergency vehicle roar by on the dirt road in front of my house. Going outside I watched as 9 more vehicles roared by to the house on the 2 1/2 acres next to mine. Soon some of their family began arriving. We. my granddaughter and I heard screams of agony. Then a young man roared out in an agonized voice "NO.NO,NO not dad! It was spine tingling to hear him. We went over to ask what had happened. The owners brother-in-law told us that Mike had killed himself. Mike was the last person you would expect to kill himself. He was a plummer. He had worked for months to remodel the interior of the house, landscape the acreage, plant trees and shrubs. He was industrious and always waved when he drove by. I reckon he was in his mid 40s. He had an old 1940s Army 3/4 ton truck out front along with a cannon mounted in the yard. The family has said they will move out. No one has came back since last night. I will miss seeing his friendly face every day....

Coming home...

Cuchi was born in January 1962 San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ironically she died 49 yrs and one month later in North San Juan, California. I felt like a hero when she first arrived in this world! She was always a happy little person and loved by those around her. Her many friends called her “giggles” or Cuchi. Her last words to me 1 day before her death were “Pop, I just love you and mommy so much and little Rebecca. I want to see you all and my grandbaby soon, maybe in March”. Sadly she is coming home after being killed by a hit and run driver, all her laughter, tears, fears, joy and hope reduced to a handful of ashes.  Cuchi came home today for the final time. God bless her.

Scooter

Scooter..
This little rascal is alive and well today thanks to his quickness. A neighbor moved away and left this little dude to fend for himself. Packs of coyotes roam this part of the desert. One evening my granddaughter and friend were standing next to a field nearby when they heard the maniacal howling and yapping of a pack of coyotes coming their way. These coyotes can make your hair stand on end when they start their pursuits. Suddenly out of the darkness a figure came hurtling through the air and landed in the arms of our friend. It was "Scooter" the abandoned little dog. The noise of the coyotes gradually faded away as the girls brought this lucky little guy into the house and yard. He has turned out to be the friendliest dog I've ever had and a joy to watch playing. He was only seconds away from certain death by coyotes. We adopted him and our Rottweiler/German Shepard mix keeps guard over him when he plays outside.
