Nowadays, plastic surgery is shifting to less invasive techniques that result to shorter recovery, more natural appearance, and less risk of complications such as bleeding, scarring, and infection. Because of this trend, fat transfer is becoming a popular option for people who want to augment a certain body part, usually buttocks and breasts, without the use of synthetic materials such as the saline and silicone implants.

The Brazilian butt lift is one of the newest procedures in plastic surgery which involves the use of a patient’s own fats to augment her buttocks. With this, the risk of adverse immune reaction and rejection is almost eliminated unlike when using synthetic implants.

How the Brazilian Butt Lift is Usually Performed

Plastic Surgeons start the procedure by collecting fatty tissues (through liposuction surgery) from areas where they tend to accumulate such as in the abdomen, inner and outer thighs, back, and around the buttocks. To reduce the surgical trauma, most doctors do not collect more than 200cc of fats in a single liposuction session.

It is important to note that not all the collected fats are injected to the buttocks since these are going to be reabsorbed by the body. To increase the fats survivability rate, these are first subjected to a purification method which separates the biomaterials such as the blood and connective tissues from the fats.

According to plastic surgeons, a purification method that is properly conducted can increase the survival rates of fats to about 90 percent. However, the purification treatment can only produce a maximum of 40cc of fats from a volume of 200cc.

To further define the buttocks, most plastic surgeons perform liposuction around the area to remove the fats. After eliminating the bulging fats, they will then re-inject the purified fats directly to the butt cheeks at a varying level to achieve a more natural appearance.

In most cases, the re-introduction of the purified fats is performed in several sessions in order to promote better absorption. And by doing this technique, it is easier for most doctors to determine if both the cheeks are symmetrical.

Despite the advantages of this new procedure in Plastic Surgery, this is not recommended, or even possible, to people who have not enough fatty deposits in their body. If this is the problem, they can resort to butt implant surgery to improve their figure. (In butt implant surgery, only the silicone is used since the saline implant can easily rupture with the weight of the patients.)
