The Fort Wayne boys who died after being pulled from the St. Marys River have been identified by Allen County Coroner Dr. Jon Brandenberger.
Kendal Dominick Lumpkin, 4, and Cody M. Mann, 9, were pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. Monday at Parkview Hospital, according to a written statement from the coroner’s office issued Monday afternoon.
The cause of death was listed as asphyxia because of drowning. The manner of death was listed as pending.
The deaths remain under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the coroner’s office and the Allen County prosecutor’s office, the statement said.
Police, firefighters and state conservation officers were called to the 400 block of Fairwick Lane, at an apartment complex off Fairfield Avenue, about 7 p.m. Sunday.
The boys' mother told police the boys had been playing outside when she noticed they were missing. She and a family member searched for the boys before calling police, but it was not known how long they had been missing, Deputy Chief Karl Niblick said Sunday night.
About the same time the fire department arrived, police officers followed footprints from the playground behind the apartments, and a police officer found one of the boys in the river unresponsive, Niblick said.
The Fort Wayne Fire Department water rescue scuba divers were called to the scene and searched the river for the second child, Brokaw said.
At 8:29 p.m., the second boy was brought up from the river.
