18 years ago I was very fortunate to purchase from a pet adoption the best friend any man or woman could ever have. I picked up a Catahoula the runt of his litter, a litter that was dropped off at the side of the road to die the most horrible of deaths just for being born. He and I enjoyed both high points and low points in my miserable life and yet he never turned his back on me unlike those that claimed to be a "friend". Beau was a true friend, the most unique canine with the ability to sense trouble yet only barked when necessary he'd place himself in harms way to protect those he loved, If you were troubled he also sensed that too and stayed by your side till he felt your trouble pass and never asked for anything in return except unconditional love. He was never the type to walk with you but infront of you to divert any possible trouble yet was gentle with kids passing by. He was a great judge of a persons character, if he didnt like you or trust you he let it be known for you to keep your distance. He was K-9 trained for protection purposes and even in his golden years never forgot what he learned. I however feel responsible for his death as i brought in a stray and couldnt bring myself to hand him over to animal control and that stray years later turned on Beau which in turn lead to nerve damage and possible cancer in his neck. We did what we could to help preserve his life but eventually had to put him down 28Feb08 at 8:35a. His passing will forever leave an empty spot in my heart, you see Beau wasnt a dog, animal, pet....He was my friend, my son and #1 in my life (just ask my wife). Ive lost friends, fellow soldiers in wars and even lost my mother 6 yrs ago. Ive been shot, stabbed and have had surgeries. And yet have never felt pain as I did that thursday morning. A pain that will never leave, a constant reminder of what I lost that cant be replaced. If you've never loved an animal then you wont understand this BLOG.
