ok, so here i am bored at home on a night alone, so i decided to rent a movie or three. so i loaf off to the movie store and come home with "the Wicker Man" billed on the back of the box as a film about a small town cop who finds himself in the middle of a kidnapping/murder mystery on an island inhabited by a community of people who shun modern technology and culture. to cut a long story short at first it appears to be an amazonian male hating group of wackjobs...but a closer look reveals not so startling similarities to modern witchcraft and celtic pagan wiccanism. now here's a shocker guys... let's think about this for a minute... movies that i can recall at least that talk about or involve witches:
The Wicker Man - murdering, man-hating, manipulative loonies! The Craft - highschool bitchy power hungry wackjobs...and they got the religeous part all wrong Hocus Pocus - a disney spin on witches being child haters The Witches of Eastwick - (also rented, but haven't watched yet) 3 lonely ladies who think mr. right = rich, charming and eccentric...clearly stupid women.
ok, so there is ONE movie that kind of paints witches accurately - GO SANDRA BULLOCK and NICOLE KIDMAN! (Practical Magic)...but still. is anyone else out there getting tired of Hollywood painting witches and wiccans as total man hating loonies? |
