The two men share more than music...hockey fans through and through, they each bet on their respective home team for the NHL's Western Conference quarterfinals; Chad (Kroeger) for the Vancouver Canucks and Vinnie (Paul) for his beloved Dallas Stars, with the winner receiving a brand spankin' new pair of cowboy boots. It's a good thing Vinnie lives in Dallas where he'll have a wide selection of boots to pick from for Chad. If he's awake yet after last night's deciding game in which Vancouver defeated Dallas 4-1 to move on to play the Anaheim Ducks in the NHL's Western Conference Semi-Finals, Vinnie is probably at his favorite bootery right now picking out a pair (one size too small) for Chad. Nickelback continues their 5xPlatinum run with "All the Right Reasons," along with what seems like a non-stop tour schedule. Vinnie and the Hellyeah boys are gearing up for their Spring "Fire It Up" tour in conjunction with their self-titled debut release that had the highest debut chart position for a new hard rock artist. HellYeah entered Billboard’s Top 200 charts at #9 and Billboard’s Rock Chart at #3, tying Korn for the highest chart position for a hard rock artist in 2007. “You Wouldn’t Know,” the first single and accompanying video from Hellyeah has shot inside the Top 10 on the Active Rock radio charts in ten weeks. Following "Fire It Up," the boys will be joining the Family Values tour as follows: * Maryland Heights, Missouri (July 20) * Somerset, Wisconsin (July 21) * Chicago (July 22) * Camden, New Jersey (July 24) * Mansfield, Massachusetts (July 27) * Bristow, Virginia (July 28) * Hartford, Connecticut (July 29) * Toronto (July 31) * Clarkston, Michigan (August 1) * Darien Center, New York (August 3) * Burgettstown, Pennsylvania (August 4) * Scranton, Pennsylvania (August 5) * Saratoga Springs, New York (August 7) * Holmdel, New Jersey (August 8) * Noblesville, Indiana (August 10) * Atlanta (August 11) * Orlando, Florida (August 12) * West Palm Beach, Florida (August 14) * Tampa, Florida (August 15) * Dallas (August 17) * Woodlands, Texas (August 18) * Selma, Texas (August 19) * Bonner Springs, Kansas (August 22) * Englewood, Colorado (August 24) * Albuquerque, New Mexico (August 25) * Phoenix (August 26) * Bakersfield, California (August 28) * Marysville, California (August 31) * Concord, California (September 1) * Irvine, California (September 2)

HELLYEAH's self-titled debut album has sold just under 45,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at No. 9 on The Billboard 200 chart. A three-minute clip featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the making of HELLYEAH's "You Wouldn't Know" video has been posted at YouTube. The clip was shot on February 25, 2007 with director Nathan Cox in the parking lot of the Dallas, Texas stripclub owned by Vinnie Paul Abbott. The finished "You Wouldn't Know" video is available for viewing at this location.
Featuring members from Mudvayne, Nothingface, Danzig and Pantera, Hellyeah is one of those supergroups that is just as likely to get people cringing as it is to get them excited. JOSIE SMITH reports. Pay no mind to the fact that each of the members of Hellyeah is a celebrated musician in his own circle; the joining of forces appears to be causing some consternation. Being a distinctly southern-influenced beast all of its own, the project is hardly going to be the second coming of any of the aforementioned bands. But as Hellyeah/Mudvayne frontman Chad Gray explains, he doesn’t see that as reason enough to discount the band or its debut release. “Hellyeah is just really something to be excited about and I hope people get behind it,” he says. “I think the biggest reason why somebody wouldn’t get behind this is if they’re not open-minded enough because it’s a really diverse little record. There’s some really heavy songs on it, some really mellow songs, some beautiful songs and chaotic, crazy songs and it’s pretty much all over the map.” Though the public may not have been familiar with Hellyeah for long, Gray says the barely fortnight-old release is the culmination of many years of playing with the idea of a side project. “We’ve been talking about this for five years, you know. Tom (Maxwell, Nothingface) and I were out on tour back in the day and we got on really good. Drank a lot, partied a lot, talked a lot of shit about starting this super-heavy band. That was years and years ago, and we always kind of just kept it in our heads. “Then we saw a window of opportunity in Mudvayne because we knew no matter what, we were gonna take a summer off. So rather than taking a break you know, like most normal people watch TV or pet your dog or hug your wife or whatever, I’m like ‘Well, I’m gonna go to Dallas and write a record’. I don’t know why the fuck I did it, but I did it, and I’m really proud of it and it’s been a lot of fun.” Currently Gray and fellow Mudvayne member Greg Tribbett are in the process not only of promoting Hellyeah, but recording the next Mudvayne album. Gray admits it’s proving to be a challenge. “I kind of forgot what it was like, you know? Once you start up a record and you do all your prep and then you go on the road and you’re so far away from that initial setup that you don’t remember it. I’m thinking it’s no problem, and then I’m working on the Mudayne stuff and someone comes to me and tells me I got promo stuff all day tomorrow for Hellyeah. “But it’s worked out pretty good. They understand that we’re working on Mudvayne, so everyone’s been really cool to help lighten the load off of us. Most people just wanna talk to Vinnie (Paul Abbott, ex-Pantera) anyway,” he says with a laugh. But an almost boyishly enthusiastic Gray insists that the pleasure of having a second outlet far outweighs any associated pain. “Hellyeah fills a hole somewhere inside of me that I had, and some kind of a gap in my life, something I was missing out on from writing. Hellyeah is not a better thing or a worse thing, it’s just different. The Hellyeah record is cool because I was just writing what was on my mind, and I don’t know where that would have been able to fit in into a Mudvayne record. “That’s where I’m thankful to have that Hellyeah outlet. It’s really another side of my psyche and my headspace and what I’m about. I think it’s important for people to kind of sever themselves and look at the other side of yourself or whatever, if you have time to do it.” Hellyeah’s distinctly southern flavour might have fans of the various members’ other projects feeling ever so slightly confused. Gray says that the twangy rebel attitude wasn’t deliberate and not really a surprise to anyone involved, but a natural result of the band’s backgrounds and influences. “I dunno man, I think where we come from, we’re not 22 years old. Our first band that we started listening to wasn’t Korn. We were into old Metallica and Megadeth and Obituary. And even further back, Ozzy and Sabbath, The Steve Miller Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. I think that’s probably where it comes from you know, you start laying down grooves and that’s what you got.” To Gray at least, although the band has found its detractors in loyal fans of the line-up’s original bands, Hellyeah are finding plenty of fans of their own. The heavy music veteran seems refreshed by the idea of starting over with something new. “It’s pretty cool because you know, you think everybody knows about something, but there are so many people out there that don’t know about Hellyeah yet. You can be so into something that you think the whole world knows about it, but they really don’t. With how we are and how just getting started this is, I know there’s a lot of people out there that don’t know anything about it. I know what we’re gonna have to do is just blow it up live. That’s the bottom line, I’ve told everybody in the band that.” And yes, says Gray, the plan is to bring the band to Australia sooner rather than later. “Australia, with Mudvayne, has really welcomed us down there, and we feel more comfortable there than anywhere else in the world. I’d like to start laying the foundations for making this a worldwide band rather than just beating the shit out of the US all the time, which can be pretty typical. If I had to come out and say a time, I would say it would happen in June.” It seems Gray can’t wait to show the world his new pet project. Audibly beaming with pride, it’s clear the man is being sincere when he says the trials of being in two successful bands are worth it. “You know, it took us four fucking years, but we did it. It’s been forever since we started talking about this, and then we actually saw it to fruition so it’s been pretty exciting from our end of things, because it shows the amount of passion that we have for each other and playing for each other and wanting to get this done and do it right. It had felt like it was going to be impossible, but we saw it through.”

Nick Snelling of Australia's Beat magazine recently conducted an interview with former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN and current HELLYEAH drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. A few excerpts follow: On whether it feels good to be back on the drums after all this time: "Hell yeah, man. It's somethin' that I've done all my life, but after everythin' that happened with us on onstage…with Dime, and all that…I didn't know if I'd ever be able to do it again or not, you know? But it's somethin' that I really missed and these guys helped bring me back to it, so I'm going to give it everythin' I got." On the fact that the friendships formed remain the most rewarding aspect to his new band: "I missed that part of being in a band — the brotherhood, the camaraderie, like you're part of an unstoppable army. The best friend that I ever had was Dime. We did everything together, we thought alike, we had the same mindset and everything, and I miss that a lot. Always will. These guys — they're all great people. When we made this record, they came down and lived with me here in Texas, we didn't put them up in a hotel or nothin'. We barbequed together, drank together, went to the strip-club together, and we all became great friends. One of the cool things about this record, was that there weren't any egos. As a consequence, we got the very best out of everybody musically." On how his father, Jerry Abbott, the country producer, has gotten behind HELLYEAH all the way: "At first, he was very leery of it all. But I just had to tell him, 'Dad, this is what I do. I've played music all my life, I love playin' drums and bein' onstage, I love tourin' and seein' other countries, and now I have this opportunity to do it again. And the thing is, I know Dime is tellin' me to go all the way with this thing. The last thing he would want is for me to curl up in a shell and quit. Or do somethin' stupid. This is the right thing for me to do. Yeah, man — my dad totally supports me on it." On HELLYEAH's musical approach: "Lookin' at where metal has gone, there's been a long time since there's been a record like this. It seems like metal has gone in a real technical direction — everythin' seems to get faster 'n' faster, more and more parts, more intensity. We wanted to make a record that had a) the best mother-fu**in' poundin' grooves we could come up with, and b) songs that people really relate to and sing along to — anthems, so to speak." On how a metal drummer ends up owning a celebrated gentlemen's establishment, the Dallas stripclub The Clubhouse: "Well, that's easy. I was spendin' all this time when I wasn't onstage at strip bars, so I figured, 'Hell, I might as well get my own and get some of my money back.' It's been one of the best investments I ever made — it's the coolest strip bar known to mankind, and everybody who tours here through Dallas, Texas has been here. It's a very, very famous place now, to the point that we're now looking at expanding operations and looking at some other places we can start up another one." On how hard it is for Vinnie, in that the first, most natural thing for people to do is want to offer their condolences, but then how does he move on with such constant reminders: "You got it, man. It just always sends me back to a dark place, you know? I know that people loved Dime and miss him. I understand that, but I got to move forward now. I just got to. I know that Dime will always be there with me, and he reminds me everyday whenever it turns 3.33 on the clock — 33 was his favourite number. I'll turn around to look at the time, and it'll be 3.33 in the afternoon or mornin' — that's his way of tellin' me, 'Hey man, I'm still here with you'. I accept it when it comes, but it's not something that people really have to tell me. I know it's there — it's always in the back of everyone's mind, but we all gotta keep moving on."
