Mayor: Grand Isle won't be normal until Christmas 06:40 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 Bill Capo / Eyewitness News Grand Isle Mayor David Camardelle hopes the island will be back to normal by Christmas. But this week he warns that residents who want to return home and stay should expect very primitive living conditions, as utility crews work to restore basic services. WWL-TV "You don't have lights, you don't have gas, but I'm gonna get you gas. Probably by Thursday I'm gonna have gas, hopefully finished by Friday,” he told residents. “I want them to stay off of LA-1 because you can see the utilities, you've got maybe 150 Entergy trucks." Despite the warnings and rainy midday skies, Grand Isle police led a convoy of residents back to the island, but inside the vehicles, smiles and waves were apparent from those returning home. “I hope everything's all right,” said Donny Willard. “I got a boat over there I'm trying to get to, since the first one, my shrimp boat." "Glad to be back,” said Marian Cooper. “I haven't seen my place yet, but I'm going to school because we're thinking of starting school, and bringing us back to normal I hope." They found Ike did more structural damage to some homes, blowing off roofs and siding. But it was the storm surge they say was worse than Gustav. Rising water trapped Betty Doud on the island. "Nobody was expecting this,” Doud said. “This was just unreal. It was just coming in waves. We had it white-capping all the way through here. I took a bunch of pictures, and its amazing, you know." Now Betty and others returning residents are virtually confined to their homes as utility crews work to clear the sand off highway one, and restore power. “It gets tough, it gets aggravating, you get frustrated, and it gets boring, very boring." Grand Isle Fire Chief Aubry Chaisson says his crews will check up on residents, and deliver basic supplies. "Trying to provide them with ice, water, going down the streets, taking care of health,” Chaisson said. “We're gonna have medics going to check on the senior citizens, so they ain't got to get out and about." But Ike gave a new worry to Grand Isle's mayor. The storm flattened some sections of levee again, and he is hoping for emergency repairs from the Corps of Engineers. "The Corps done cancelled the contract with the original contractor that was helping put this together,” Camardelle said. “And now they telling me they gonna come up with a master plan, and probably have to put it out for bids. But I tell you what, I ain't waiting on the Corps, I ain't waiting on nobody. If there's a low pressure, I got a mound of clay mud right there, and I'm gonna do what I got to do to protect my people."
