GoCubz51's blog: "Yay!!!"

Good Friday!!

SO now that I know how to post blogs, I get to start my ramblings......and today being "Good Friday", I figured I would start with a Lent related topic.

I grew up Christian, more specifically Lutheran.  See when you are a Christian, apparently you have to then specify your denomination to help legitimize your status.  I find it quite amazing that so many people read from the same book, the same words, yet they turn them and twist them into such differences.

One of the areas that sticks out is Lent.  Many Catholics give up something for Lent and they dont eat meat on Fridays.  This practice is widely accepted and is the reason there are Friday night "fish frys" and pepper and egg sandwiches as well as the double fillet o fish sandwich at Mc Donalds.  The funny thing about this widely accepted practice is, there's no commandment from God, Jesus, the apostles, or anyone else to do this.  This was a rule made up by the Catholic Church in one of their "Canons" which is their rules so to speak.  Wait, it gets even better.........

According to the Catholic Canon......You aren't supposed to eat meat on any Friday during the year, and not at all during Lent. (Canon 1250-1253 address this in case you want to check my sources)  So why all the confusion, seems pretty black and white doesn't it?  Wait...there's more........

The whole point of abstaining from meat was to be a sort of penance, because for some reason teh Catholic Church wants to constantly remind you of how evil you all are and you must punish yourselves on a weekly basis, but I digress.  In 1966 A bunch of Bishops in the United states got together and issued a statement surrounding penance on fridays.  The excuse was that back in the day when they first came up with the abstain from meat on fridays, meat was less common.  Now since it's become such a main staple of our diets, if you can find some other form of penance to perform on fridays, then it's ok to eat meat, with the exception of during fridays of Lent.

So let me get this straight......Back when it was rare to eat meat, we'll demand you give that up on one day a week for penance.  That's like saying......from now on your punishment will be no eating chocolate mousse on fridays!!  Really, that's a sacrifice?  Ok, moving on......now that meat is more common and it may actually impact you or cause you to reflect on why you arent easting meat, we'll say you can do something else instead, but since we dont know what that something else instead is, we dont really care....just go do whatever it is you want to do.  Oh and this only holds true for American Catholics!  Anyone else find this humorous?

Please dont take this as I hate Catholics, or the Church, etc....  I'm not a super religious person.  I consider myself a Christian, but have gone the route of non-denominational.  I read the Bible and make up my own decisions.  I try and treat everyone the way I want to be treated, I believe that most people are good people, and it's not my place to judge them.  SO when I eat my sausage mcmuffin with egg on a Friday during lent.......back the F*ck off!!!!

Cheers :)
