Rabbi & Bus Driver An orthodox Rabbi dies and goes to heaven. As he's approaching the gates, he hears a band of singing and dancing angels approach, and begins to get excited. The lead angel approaches the Rabbi and asks if he would mind stepping aside for a moment. Shocked, shocked the Rabbi does so. The angels march out of the gates and encircle a man who has also approached the gates. The man was a tour bus driver in Jamaica. The joyous parade of angels carries the bus driver in ahead of the Rabbi. When the parade is gone, an angel returns to the Rabbi and says, "You can come in now." The angel begins to lead the Rabbi inside alone. The Rabbi, somewhat confused, says, "I'm not one to make waves or anything, but I need to know something. I think I've been a good Rabbi. I've worked hard all my life. Why is it that the Jamaican bus driver gets led in by a band of angels ahead of me?" The angel says, "Well, frankly, Rabbi, whenever you preached, people slept. But whenever he drove, people prayed."

A hairstylist shot an unhappy client after she complained about her haircut, police said. Lauren Newton, 28, was getting her hair cut Thursday at the home of Monique Reed when the two began to argue about the style, police said. "She (Reed) went to the bedroom, got a gun, fired a shot in the ceiling," Police Chief James Blyth said. Newton, who was trying to flee with her sister, was then shot in the lower back, he said. Reed, 38, was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment. She remained in jail in this southwestern Pennsylvania town in lieu of $50,000 bond. Newton's injuries were not considered life threatening. She was taken to a hospital in nearby Pittsburgh for treatment. The district magistrate's office said Reed had not listed an attorney as of late Thursday.

UNC student from Athens found fatally shot Eve Marie Carson was student body president at Chapel Hill By KEN SUGIURA The Atlanta Journal-Constitutio n Published on: 03/06/08 A University of North Carolina student leader from Athens, Ga., Eve Marie Carson, was shot to death early Wednesday, Chapel Hill, N.C., police said Thursday. Carson, 22, the UNC student body president and a graduate of Clarke Central High School in Athens, was found at an intersection near campus, police said. Carson was identified Thursday morning, according to a police press release. As of early Thursday afternoon, police had not made any arrests. Police said she had last been seen alive at 1:30 a.m. early Wednesday, the Raleigh News & Observer reported. Police are looking for Carson's stolen 2005 blue Toyota Highlander with Georgia license plate AIV 6690, the newspaper reported on its Web site. Carson was the recipient of the school's prestigious Morehead Scholarship and was a pre-med student double majoring in biology and political science. She participated in leadership and service at UNC and, according to the university, had also been student body president at Clarke Central. Carson's death came just one day after the shooting death of another Georgia student, Lauren Burk, of Marietta, while attending college out of state. Burk was a freshman at Auburn and was found dying of a gunshot wound along a road a few miles from campus on Tuesday evening.

Cigarette smoke, excessive alcohol intake, radiation, environmental pollutants and highly refined junk food. These are some of the most common factors that prompt oxidative stress in the body, increasing the risk of a wide range of health problems. According to a new study published online in the Journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, an antioxidant protein known as haptoglobin helps prevent inflammation in artery walls and is a key element in preventing cardiovascular events such as heart attack in type 2 diabetes patients. Unfortunately, some diabetics have a haptoglobin gene called Hp 2-2 that's been linked to poor antioxidant protection and a greater risk of heart problems. A group of Israeli researchers conducted a study to test their hypothesis that vitamin E supplements might boost antioxidant protection and reduce cardiovascular events in diabetics with Hp 2-2. The Israeli researchers note that the Hp 2-2 gene is present only in a small percentage of the population. But given the importance of vitamin E and the fact that no adverse effects were reported over the 18 months of this study, there would appear to be no downside for diabetics who supplement with vitamin E, provided they first discuss supplement usage with their doctors.
