What are you waiting for?

They call me a hero?

I get called a hero for doing EMS, I don't really understand why. I don't view myself as a hero, I am just a EMT who does what I am trained. I treat the sick and injured to the best of my abilities. I try to save lives and treat what is wrong with you, so you can get the help you need to have another day with your family and loved ones. I treat anyone who needs it, no questions asked. I don't judge you, I don't care if your Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, Gay, Straight, a drug addict, alcoholic, homeless or a criminal. I look at you and see someone who needs help thats all. I want you to feel safe in my hands and know I will treat you no matter what. I put myself at risk to help people and make sure that I do everything I can. I expose myself to AIDS, Hepatitis and other diseases everyday. I risk getting sick to help everyone when they need it. I do have ways to protect myself, but even this isn't 100% effective. I am still at risk of getting stuck with needles and other sharp objects. I have been assaulted numerous times, shot at, almost been stabbed. But I chose this job knowing that these things happen and that every shift I work could be my last. You ask why I would do this even after that, because I love what I do, EMS is my life I eat, sleep and breath EMS, It is a part of me and always will be. I go into work and do all of this for a whole $12 an hour, but am I complaining no because I would do this job even if I wasn't paid for it. I love it that much. My reward is seeing you live another day, and seeing the smile on your loved ones faces when they realize you will be around at least for another day, and them getting to tell you that they love you. None of this makes me a hero, It just makes me an EMT who values life and wants to to the best I can everyday. OzzyFreak The Goth EMT

How did I become an EMT?

I get asked all the time how I became an EMT Well here is how. It started in 1997. I was on my way to becomeing a Doctor, I was having trouble in school and wasn't feeling very good about myself at the time. I was use to getting a 4.0 GPA in all my courses and all of a sudden I am getting 3.5 and a 3.0 in physics. I was starting to worry I couldn't handle pre-med. I phoned a friends and asked what I should do. This friend was a paramedic and he said I should look into EMS, my friend told me to meet him at the station for his next shift. The next night I end up at the EMS station and get to do a ride-a-long. The first call was an easy one, a pick up at a nursing home and take the guy to the ER due to breathing problems. My friend asked me to try doing an assessment and asked me what was wrong. I jumped in there and did what I could, I pulled up the shirt and noticed what was wrong, the guy has subcutaneous emphysema, at this point I asked what should I do. My friend said give him O2. I started the O2 treatment and noticed the guy looked a bit better. I felt like I was on top of the world, here I am making him feel better and being so hands on. The next call we had was a huge motor vehicle accident, 4 cars and 16 people involved. I looked at the scene and first thing that came into my mind was how do I help all these people, What can I do? Well just as I was wondering if this job was for me my friend called me over and told me to hold C spine on an older lady in one of the cars. I knew at that point while holding her head in my hands and seeing that I was making a difference that this was what I wanted to do with my life. I was hooked, EMS had a hold on me. The next day I goto the university and tell them I was to drop out to become a Paramedic. You can imagine the responses I got from this one, why would you quit pre-med to become a paramedic? I told them I want to make a difference in lives and paramedicine is the first link to care. I want to be there for the people when they needed me the most. Ok and I will admit now the idea of playing with the lights and sirens sure helped in that desicion. That afternoon after signing all the papers to drop out. I enrolled in an EMT course and started a week later, after three months of school I was done, and on my way to take the state exam. I passed it on the first try and applied with AMR and got a job a week later. This was almost 11 years ago and I still love my job as much now as I did then.

My EMS theme song

Can you lay your life down, so a stranger can live? Can you take what you need, but take less than you give? Could you close every day, without the glory and fame? Could you hold your head high, when no one knows your name? That's how legends are made, at least that's what they say. We say goodbye, but never let go. We live, we die, cause you can't save every soul. Gotta take every chance to, show that you're the kinda man who; Will never look back, never look down, and never let go. Can you lose everything, you ever had planned? Can you sit down again, and play another hand? Could you risk everything, for the chance of being alone? Under pressure find the grace, or would you come undone? That's how legends are made, at least that's what they say. We say goodbye, but never let go. We live, we die, cause you can't save every soul. Gotta take every chance to, show that you're the kinda man who; Will never look back, never look down, and never let go. Never let go, Never let go, Never let go Gotta take every chance to, show that you're the kinda man who; Will never look back, never look down, and never let go. We say goodbye, but never let go. We live, we die, 'but you can't save every soul. Gotta take every chance to, show that you're the kinda man who; Will never look back, never look down, and never let go. Will never look back, never look down, and never let go. ***Never Let Go by Bryan Adams***
